  • To acquire the safety along with durability of mechanical machinery products, we should consider the structural mechanics such as stress, deformation and dynamic vibration characteristics and identify those important aspects in the stage of preliminary design engineering. This cryogenic ball valve is used to transfer the liquified natural gas which temperature is $-196^{\circ}C$, supplied pressure is $168kg/cm^2$. For the cryogenic ball valve, the assurance of structural integrity and operability are essential to meet not only normal, abnormal loading conditions but also functionality during a seismic event. In this thesis, analytical approach and results using finite element analysis and computational method are herein presented to evaluate the aspects of structural integrity along with operability of cryogenic ball valve. In this study, we designed the high pressure cryogenic ball valve that accomplishes zero leakage by elastic seal at normal temperature and metal seal at high temperature.

  • The high pressure cryogenic ball valve is used to transfer the liquefied natural gas which temperature is $-196^{\circ}C$, supplied pressure is $168kgf/cm^2$. In the present work, the temperature distribution and thermal deformation is calculated numerically. The CAR and CFD methods are useful to predict the thermal matter and the inner flow field of high pressure cryogenic ball valve. For this reason, to optimum design of the cryogenic ball valve, the theological behavior of the supplied LNG in a cryogenic valve has been studied. The governing equations are discredited and solved numerically by the finite-volume method and finite-element method. In this study, we designed the high pressure cryogenic ball valve that accomplishes zero leakage by elastic seal at normal temperature and metal seal at high temperature.

  • In this study, numerical simulations were conducted for conjugate heat transfer around ice balls in an encapsulated ice thermal storage system. Four shapes of ice balls were modeled; the default one was a sphere, and the other three shapes were designed to enhance convective heat transfer through the ball surface. The flow around the ball was laminar, for which the Reynolds number was 300, and both forced and natural convections inside and outside the balls were considered. The simulations revealed that the magnitude of convective heat transfer for the different shapes decreased in the following order: bone, dimple, hole, and sphere. For the entire simulation, the maximum difference in the average temperatures of water inside the capsules was found to be $0.9^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it can be said that the effect of ice-ball shape on the performance of the ice thermal storage system is significant, considering that more than 0.3 million balls are used in this system.

  • Dry sliding wear resistance of DLC coated silicon disk with different surface roughness has been evaluated using a ball-on-disk sliding tester. It was found that the transfer layer formed on steel ball produced a low friction regime and the formation of transfer layer was more active with increasing the substrate surface roughness. Wear life of DLC coating was increased as increasing the real area of contact.

  • Recently, Pb-free solder ball technology, which is getting more significant in miniaturization of electronic equipment, and resolution of recent environmental problems, is necessary to be developed. A plastic-core solder ball is much promising in those considerations. Plastic-core solder balls have the tendency to replace the usual metal-core solder ball from low material cost and superior mechanical properties. The thermal effects, however, are important in manufacturing process, such as deposing micro-sized metal thin film on the spherical polymer surface. Furthermore plastic-core solder balls are easy to be broken due to CTE and elastic coefficient of material property from heat transfer. We propose technical computational investigations for the manufacturing design and the reliability of plastic-core solder ball from thermal stress analysis.

  • In this study, the Ball screw and Servo motor Mechanism is considered as a High Speed Tool Feed System for the machining of a piston of a reciprocating engine. For the machining of a piston, that shapes oval, high speed servo mechanism is needed as a positioning of a cutting tool, and the stroke of tool is 0.1 mm ~ 1 mm. Ball screw and servo motor Mechanism is available very much because this mechanism is used widely in general machine. This Mechanism has been designed with the use of the decrease in mass and partial wear of the ball screw for high speed positioning of tool. Also the periodic learning control method with the inverse transfer function compensation has been applied to the positioning control for the high accuracy positioning of tool. These applications lead the achievement of the machining of a piston with an accuracy of 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 2500 rpm in CNC turning.

  • A high thermal conductivity material, namely graphene is treated by planetary ball milling machine to transport the heat by increasing the temperature. Experiments were performed to assess the heat transfer enhancement benefits of coating the bottom wall of copper substrate with graphene. It is well known that the graphene is unable to disperse into base fluid without any treatment, which is due to the several reasons such as attachment of hydrophobic surface, agglomeration and impurity. To further improve the dispersibility and thermal characteristics, planetary ball milling approach is used to grind the raw samples at optimized condition. The results are examined by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectrometer, UV-spectrometer, thermal conductivity and thermal imager. Thermal conductivity measurements of structures are taken to support the explanation of heat transfer properties of different samples. As a result, it is found that the planetary ball milling approach is effective for improvement of both the dispersion and heat carriers of carbon based material. Indeed, the heat transfer of the ground graphene coated substrate was higher than that of the copper substrate with raw graphene.

  • The reduction of heat transfer rate to the stored liquid hydrogen from outside condition is extremely important to keep the liquid hydrogen longer. In this paper the highly efficient support system for the liquid hydrogen storage vessel was newly developed and analysed. The support system was composed of a spherical ball in the center of supporter to reduce the heat transfer area, with its above and below supporting blocks which are the SUS and PTFE blocks inserted in the SUS tube. The heat transfer rate and temperature distribution of the support system were evaluated by FLUENT, and the thermal stress and strain were estimated by ANSYS software. The results showed that the heat transfer rate from outer vessel to inner one was extremely decreased compared with the common method which is simply SUS tubes inserted between inner and outer tanks. The thermal stress and strain were obtained well below the limited values. As a result, it was the most efficient support system of storage vessel for liquid hydrogen and most cryogenic fluids.

  • Probably the most significant heat transfer in the cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage tank from the atmosphere may occur through its support system. In this paper the efficient support system for the cryogenic storage vessel was newly developed and analysed. The support system was composed of a spherical ball as a supporter to reduce the contact area. which is located between two supporting SUS tubes inserted SUS and PTFE blocks. Numerical analyses for temperature distribution, and the thermal stress and strain of the support system were performed by the commercial codes FLUENT and ANSYS. The heat transfer rate of the supporter was evaluated by the thermal boundary potential method which can consider the variation of thermal conductivity with temperature. The results showed that the heat transfer rate through the developed supporter compared with the common SUS tube supporter was significantly reduced. The thermal stress and strain were obtained well below the limited values. It was found that the developed supporter can be one of the most efficient support systems for cryogenic liquid storage vessel.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of various balls velocity under the different surface conditions after impact. For this study, four different balls were used which are golf ball, tang-tang ball, table tennis ball, and iron ball. And two different types of ground conditions were used which are artificial grass green and glass green. Movements of putter head and ball were recorded with 2 HD video cameras(60 Hz, 1/500s shutter speed). Small size control object($18.5cm{\times}18.5cm{\times}78.5cm$) was used in this study. To transfer the same amount of kinetic energy to the ball, pendulum putting machine was used. Analyzing the process of impact and the ball movement, a putter was digitized the whole movement but the ball was digizited within the 50cm movement. Velocities were calculated by the first central difference method(Hamill & Knutzen, 1995). Putter head velocities were about 112.2cm/s-116.2cm/s at impact. Maximum ball velocities were appeared 0.08s-0.10s after impact no matter what the ground conditions are. Table tennis ball recorded higher ball velocities than the other ball velocities and iron ball recorded the lowest ball velocity in this group. But Table tennis ball was influenced with the frictional force and immediately was decreased at the artificial grass green condition. If an object is received the kinetic energy under the static condition(v=0cm/s), the object recorded the maximum velocity shortly after the impact and then decreased the velocity because of the frictional force. The ball distance from the start position to the peak velocity position is about 6cm-10cm under the 112.2cm/s-116.2cm/s putting velocity with putter. 0.25 seconds later after impact balls were placed 40cm distance from the original position except iron ball. In this study, ball moving distances were too short therefore it was not possible to investigate the reactions after the translational force is disappeared. Rotational force would play a major role at the end of the ball movement. Future study must accept two things. One is long distance movement of ball and the other is balanced ground. Three-piece ball is a good item to investigate the golf ball movement on the different surface conditions.
