The Change of balance index to balance training in Osteoarthritis (퇴행성관절염 환자들에게 균형훈련이 균형지수에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : In order to investigate the effects of balance training on patients with degenerative arthritis. Methods : 30 participants aged 60 or older participated in balance training for an 8-week period. The effects of the balance training were measured by the visual analog scale(VAS) and static and dynamic balancing. The following are the results of the study. Results : There were no statistically significant differences in measurements of pain when control group participants were at rest and while walking as measured by VAS, but there were statistically significant reductions for the experiment group. Within the control group, there were no statistically significant differences between pretest and posttest results for opened and closed-eye static balance index and visual dynamic balance index. However, within the experiment group, there were statistically significant differences between pretest and posttest results for opened and closed-eye static and dynamic balance indices. Conclusion : The results above provide evidence that balance training effects pain and balance of patients with osteoarthritis and aids in functional movement.

Gravity Compensator for the Roll-pitch Rotation (Roll-pitch 중력 보상 기구 설계)

  • This paper presents a gravity compensator for the manipulator of a service robot. The manipulator of a service robot is operated with low velocity for the safety reason in most cases. In this situation gravitational torques generated by the mass of links are often much greater than dynamic torques for motion. A gravity compensator can counterbalance the gravitational torques, thereby enabling to utilize relatively low power motors. In this paper the gravity compensation for the roll-pitch rotation is considered which is often used for the shoulder joints of the manipulator of a service robot or humanoid robot. A gimbals is implemented and two 1-dof gravity compensators are equipped at the base. One compensates the gravitational torque at the roll joint and another provides the compensational torque for the gimbals. Various analyses showed that the proposed compensator can counterbalance the gravitational torques of 87% at the pitch joint and 50% at the roll joint. It is verified from dynamic simulations that the proposed compensator effectively counterbalances the gravitational torques.

  • An elevator is driven by the friction between the pulley and wire rope. A balancing counter weight is connected to the elevator car with a wire rope. This structure is essential to drive elevators while it always has weight unbalance problems on each side. The overbalance-ratio of elevators may be an important factor for safety and structural efficiency; however, it is not yet clearly defined in the Requirements of Korea Elevator Inspection. This paper describes these "weight unbalance ratio" for control of elevators to reduce the number of accidents. It includes the analysis of current elevator maintenance situations and also proposes some fundamental improvement schemes for safety.

Development of Algorithm for 2-D Automatic Mesh Generation and Remeshing Technique Using Bubble Packing Method (I) -Linear Analysis- (버블패킹방법을 이용한 2차원 자동격자 생성 및 재구성 알고리듬 개발(I) -선형 해석-)

  • The fully automatic algorithm from initial finite element mesh generation to remeshing in two dimensional geometry is introduced using bubble packing method (BPM) for finite element analysis. BPM determines the node placement by force-balancing configuration of bubbles and the triangular meshes are made by Delaunay triangulation with advancing front concept. In BPM, we suggest two node-search algorithms and the adaptive/recursive bubble controls to search the optimal nodal position. To use the automatically generated mesh information in FEA, the new enhanced bandwidth minimization scheme with high efficiency in CPU time is developed. In the remeshing stage, the mesh refinement is incorporated by the control of bubble size using two parameters. And Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) technique is used for error estimation. To verify the capability of this algorithm, we consider two elasticity problems, one is the bending problem of short cantilever beam and the tension problem of infinite plate with hole. The numerical results indicate that the algorithm by BPM is able to refine the mesh based on a posteriori error and control the mesh size easily by two parameters.

  • Since the shipbuilding industry is at its peak to assimilate the large volume of orders in recent years, the Floating Dock has been an alternative to the dry dock which takes a certain period of time to build. Hence the use of Floating Dock is steadily increasing. Since the Skid Launching System(SLS) is used in Floating Dock, the balancing of the ship while launching is important and achieved by adjusting the Ballast tank of the Floating Dock. In this paper a Floating Dock Control Simulator for SLS is developed through the on-line interface of VRC(Valve Remote Control), Tank Level & Draft Measuring System and Valve Control algorithm on Simulation Tank Plan.

A Fault Tolerant Control Technique for Hybrid Modular Multi-Level Converters with Fault Detection Capability

  • In addition to its modular nature, a Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter (HMMC) assembled from half-bridge and full-bridge sub-modules, is able to block DC faults with a minimum number of switching devices, which makes it attractive for high power applications. This paper introduces a control strategy based on the Root-Least Square (RLS) algorithm to estimate the capacitor voltages instead of using direct measurements. This action eliminates the need for voltage transducers in the HMMC sub-modules and the associated communication link with the central controller. In addition to capacitor voltage balancing and suppression of circulating currents, a fault tolerant control unit (FTCU) is integrated into the proposed strategy to modify the parameters of the HMMC controller. On advantage of the proposed FTCU is that it does not need extra components. Furthermore, a fault detection unit is adapted by utilizing a hybrid estimation scheme to detect sub-module faults. The behavior of the suggested technique is assessed using PSCAD offline simulations. In addition, it is validated using a real-time digital simulator connected to a real time controller under various normal and fault conditions. The proposed strategy shows robust performance in terms of accuracy and time response since it succeeds in stabilizing the HMMC under faults.

Development and Application of an Overcoming Compassion Fatigue Program for Emergency Nurses (응급실 간호사를 위한 공감피로 극복프로그램 개발 및 효과검증)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a program to help emergency nurses overcome compassion fatigue, and to analyze the effects of the program. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. There were 14 participants in the experimental group and 18 subjects in the control group. The program was comprised of five, weekly 80-minute sessions including understanding and assessment of compassion fatigue, enhancing positive affect, balancing work-life, planning self care, training in relaxation techniques and cognitive restructuring, and getting social support. Research variables were ego-resiliency, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue of the ProQOL 5, and salivary cortisol. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Results: The first hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for ego resiliency between the experimental group and the control group". was not supported. The second hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion satisfaction between the experimental group and the control group" was supported (t=2.15, p=.046). The third hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion fatigue between the experimental group and the control group" was not supported. Conclusion: The first program for emergency nurses to overcome compassion fatigue in Korea was effective in increasing emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction and decreasing salivary cortisol level in the experimental group. Therefore, this program for overcoming compassion fatigue is useful to increase emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction. However replication studies of short-term intensive program reflecting emergency nurses' opinion are needed.

Comparison of Exercise Intensity of Strengthening Exercise Program for Stroke Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus (근력강화 운동프로그램의 운동 강도 적용방법에 따른 제2형 당뇨를 동반한 뇌졸중 환자의 보행 및 균형 능력, 혈당에 미치는 영향 비교)

  • PURPOSE: Strengthening training is effective at improving the function of stroke patients. This study was conducted to compare the effects of exercise intensity on walking, balancing ability, and blood glucose in stroke patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to suggest more effective exercise intensity for stroke patients. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided into an experimental group (n=11) and a control group (n=11). In the experimental group, a 40-70% strength of 1RM exercise program was applied for 40 minutes a day, three times a week for 4 weeks. The control group received a 50% intensity of 1RM for the same number and duration of interventions as the experimental group. RESULTS: Both the experimental group and the control group showed significant improvement in the gait function, balance ability, and blood glucose level after the intervention compared to before the intervention. In the FGA (functional gait assessment), the experimental group showed a 52.4% greater increase than the control group, and the fasting blood glucose level was 16.7% greater in the experimental group than the control group. CONCLUSION: The strengthening exercise program, which gradually increases exercise intensity, seems to be effective at improving the function of stroke patients with type 2 diabetes.

Policy Recommendations for Domestic Internal Control System through the Analysis of the U.S. Government Agency Inspector General System (미국 정부기관 감찰관 제도 분석을 통한 국내 내부통제시스템에의 정책적 제언)

  • As the trend towards expanding the functions of modern governments continues, there are also problems such as misconduct and waste that arise as government activities and operations increase. To solve these issues, countries are establishing and developing internal control mechanisms. In this process, the U.S. Inspector General system has been operating for over 40 years with the aim of balancing and overseeing the government and the legislature. Accordingly, this study analyzed in detail the development process of the inspector system, one of the internal control systems promoted by U.S. government agencies, the formation of an inspector community, and the deployment, cooperation, and supervision of inspectors. As a result, the internal control system of domestic government agencies also needs to continue research so that the government and parliament can maintain close relations and introduce the inspector system according to the domestic situation.

Effect of Immediate Dynamic Balance Ability of Chronic Low Back Pain on Maitland's Manual Therapy (메이트란드 도수치료가 만성 요통환자의 즉각적인 동적 균형능력에 미치는 영향)

  • There has been a diversity of therapeutic interventions for patients with chronic low back pain. However most of them have been focused on only pain. But the patients usually have a kind of structurally abnormal have fixed in lumbar vertebrae, which can decrease range of joint movement and, what is worse, reduce immediate dynamic balancing ability(IDBA). The reduced IDBA can increase the risk of injury and decrease coping ability in dangerous situation. So we introduced Maitland's manual therapy in this study in order to recover the IDBA in patients with chronic low back pain. Sixty-four patients diagnosed with chronic low back pain were included for the study. Among them, thirty-two patients(experimental group) were managed by Maitland's manual therapy, another thirty-tow patients(control group) were treated by physical science methods(H/P, TENS, U/S). Each group made use of highly reliable(0.81$\sim$0.96) star excursion balance test(SEBT) to compare the possible changes of IDBAs in two groups after treatment. In experimental group, IDBA has increased in forward, rightward, leftward, and backward, but in control group, not changed. According to the results, we concluded that Maitland's manual therapy is effective for increasing IDBA by making joints more flexible in lumbar vertebrae.
