This paper presents He's Energy Balance Method (EBM) for solving nonlinear oscillatory differential equations. Three strong nonlinear cases have been studied analytically. Analytical results of the EBM are compared with numerical solutions using Runge-Kutta's algorithm. The effects of different important parameters on the nonlinear response of the systems are studied. The results show the presented method is potentially to solve high nonlinear vibration equations.
Counter balance valve is used as one part of hydraulic motor brake system. The function of this valve is to protect over-run or free falling of inertia load. But occasionally the brake system with counter balance valve makes some undesirable problems such as pressure surges or vibrations. These problems may hurt system safety and driver's conformability. Nevertheless, studies on dynamic characteristics of hydraulic system including counter balance valve are very rare, so further accumulation of research results are required. In this study, for the purpose of easy estimation about dynamic characteristics of hydraulic system including counter balance valve, precise formulation describing fluid dynamics and valve dynamics under various boundary conditions were made. The equations obtained in the preceding process include some parameters that must be got experimentally. Flow coefficients of valve and choke are the most significant ones among the parameters. So these parameters are obtained experimentally in this study, and experimental equations obtained from the experimental data were used for numerical calculation. The equations were analysed by numerical integration using Runge-Kutta method, because the equations contain various nonlinear terms. From the numerical analysis, it was verified that the dynamic response of counter balance valve and pressure variation at each elements can be estimated very easily. So the analysing method developed in this study enabled very easy estimating the relation between the performances of counter balance valve and various physical parameters related to the valve. Conclusively, it is said that the results obtained in this study can be used very usefully to develop a new type counter balance valve or to apply the valve to actual hydraulic system for various industrial equipments.
An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.
A model combining multi-dimensional discretized population balance equations with a computational fluid dynamics simulation (CFD-DPBE model) was developed and applied to simulate turbulent flocculation and sedimentation processes in sediment retention basins. Computation fluid dynamics and the discretized population balance equations were solved to generate steady state flow field data and simulate flocculation and sedimentation processes in a sequential manner. Up-to-date numerical algorithms, such as operator splitting and LeVeque flux-corrected upwind schemes, were applied to cope with the computational demands caused by complexity and nonlinearity of the population balance equations and the instability caused by advection-dominated transport. In a modeling and simulation study with a two-dimensional simplified pond system, applicability of the CFD-DPBE model was demonstrated by tracking mass balances and floc size evolutions and by examining particle/floc size and solid concentration distributions. Thus, the CFD-DPBE model may be used as a valuable simulation tool for natural and engineered flocculation and sedimentation systems as well as for flocculant-aided sediment retention ponds.
This paper concerns two new analytical approaches for solving high nonlinear vibration equations. Energy Balance method and Hamiltonian Approach are presented and successfully applied for nonlinear vibration equations. In these approaches, there is no need to use small parameters to solve and only with one iteration, high accurate results are reached. Numerical procedures are also presented to compare the results of analytical and numerical ones. It has been established that, the proposed approaches are in good agreement with numerical solutions.

The heat of reaction has been estimated from heat balance relationships around the reactor. The heat balance equations were formulated with the assumptions that the reactor temperature is uniformly distributed and the jacket temperatures are axially distributed. We have obtained the temperature distribution of jacket contents by FDM. And then, we have rearranged the heat balance equations so that the heat of reaction can be estimated from the finite number of temperature measurements, i.e., temperatures of the reactor contents, at the jacket inlet and outlet, respectively. The proposed method for reaction heat estimation on were applied to industrial batch reactors ; one is ABS polymerization reactor and the other is SAN polymerization reactor. We have also examined the variation of overall heat transfer coefficients for the reactors during reaction.
In this paper, two schemes are introduced for dynamic simulation of underwater robotic systems. One is principle of dynamical balance, which is an easy and powerful tool for formulating dynamic equations of composite systems such as underwater vehicle-manipulator system. In the dynamic modeling, this principle gives us the closed-form of dynamic equations on matrix Lie group. The other is geometric integration algorithm, called 4-th order explicit Munthe-Kaas method. By this method, the derived differential equations can be integrated preserving geometric structure. Adopting these two schemes, dynamic simulation of underwater vehicle- manipulator system can be conducted more easily and more reliably.
A numerical model for fabrication and deposition of ultrafine SiO2 particles were proposed in the simplified horizontal MCVD apparatus using tube furnace reactor. The model equations such as energy and mass balance equations and the 0th, 1st and 2nd moment balance equations of aerosols were considered in the reactor. The phenomena of SiCl4 chemical reaction, SiO2 particle formation and coagulation, diffusion and thermophoresis of SiO2 particles were included in the aerosol dynamic equation. The profiles of gas temperature, SiCl4 concentration and SiO2 particle volume were calculated for standard conditions. The concentrations, sizes and deposition efficiencies of SiO2 particles were calculated, changing the process conditions such as tube furnace setting temperature, total gas flow rate and inlet SiCl4 concentration.
The paper deals with a model founded on the physical processes in concrete subject to high temperatures. The model is developed in the framework of continuum damage mechanics and the theory of porous media and is demonstrated on selected structures. The model comprises balance equations for heat transfer, mass transfer of water and vapour, for linear momentum and for reaction. The balance equations are completed by constitutive equations considering the special behaviour of concrete at high temperatures. Furthermore, the limitation and decline of admissible stresses is achieved by using a composed, temperature depending crack surface with a formulation for the damage evolution. Finally, the complete coupled model is applied to several structures and to different concrete in order to determine their influence on the high-temperature-behaviour.
