  • In this paper, a formation control method based on the leader-following approach for nonholonomic mobile robots is proposed. In the previous works, it is assumed that the followers know the leader's velocity by means of communication. However, it is difficult that the followers correctly know the leader's velocity due to the contamination or delay of information. Thus, in this paper, an adaptive approach based on the parameter projection algorithm is proposed to estimate the leader's velocity. Moreover, the adaptive backstepping technique is used to compensate the effects of a dynamic model with the unknown time-invariant and time-varying parameters. From the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proved that the errors of the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • In this paper, search method and sliding mode observer are developed for efficiency optimization of induction motor. The proposed control scheme consists of efficiency controller and adaptive backstepping controller. A search controller for which information of input of fuzzy controller is included in efficiency controller that uses a direct vector controlled induction motor. The search controller is based on the "Rosenbrock" method and finds the flux level at the minimum input power of induction motor. Once this optimal flux level has been determined, this information is utilized to update the rule base of a fuzzy controller A sliding mode observer is designed to estimate rotor flux and an adaptive backstepping controller is also used to compensate for mechanical uncertainties in the speed control of induction motor. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed controller.

  • A harmonic drive is compact torque transmission device with no backlash which is widely applied in industrial field to transmit torque precisely. However, one of the disadvantages of harmonic drives is the existence of mechanical flexibility caused by its structural properties, which imposes great limitation on designing precise controller This paper proposes a nonlinear controller for synchronous operation of DC servo-motors with harmonic drive, using Integrator Backstepping method. Furthermore, an alternative algorithm for serial type synchronous operation of multiple DC servo-motors is proposed. Simulation results by SIMULINK for proposed controller shows considerably small error and rapid approach to reference input, which can be adapted to industrial applications.

  • A tracking controller is presented for RLFJ(rigid link flexible joint) robot manipulators with only position measurements. The controller is developed based on the integrator backstepping design method and on the two observers: the first is simple linear form observer for the filtered link velocity errors and the other for the actuator velocities. The proposed controller achieves exponential tracking of link positions and velocities while keeping all internal signals bounded. It also guarantees exponential convergence of the estimated signals to their actual ones. Finally, simulation results are included to demonstrate the tracking performance.

  • In this paper, implementation of obstacle avoidance of a nonholonomic mobile robot in unstructured environment is introduced. To avoid obstacles, first, a reference collision-free path for the MR is generated off-line using HJB-based optimal path planning method. A controller is designed using integrator backstepping method for tracking the generated reference path. To implement the designed controller, a control system are needed and composed of camera system and PIC-based controller. The workspace is observed by a ceiling-mounted USB camera as part of an un-calibrated camera system. Thus the positional information of the MR is updated frequently and the MR can get the useful inputs for its tracking controller. The whole control system is realized by integrating a computer with PIC-based microprocessor using wireless communication: the image processing control module and path planning module serve as high level computer control while the device control serves as low level PIC microprocessor control. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the designed control system.

  • In this paper, it is dealt with a controller design problem for nonlinear systems with higher order relative degree. A robust adaptive control for uncertain nonlinear systems with stable zero dynamics will be proposed based on the high-gain adaptive output feedback and backstepping strategies. The proposed method is useful in the case where only the output signal is available.

  • In this study, a motion control problem for the vessel towed by towing ship on the sea is considered. The towed vessel does not have self-control capabilities such that its course stability totally depends on the towing ship. Especially, in the narrow canal, river and congested harbor area, extreme tension is required during the towing operation. The authors, therefore, propose a new control system design method in which the rudder is activated to provide its maneuverability. Based on the leader following system configuration, a nonlinear mathematical model is derived and a backstepping control is designed. By experiment results with nonlinear control framework, the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed strategy are presented.

  • This paper presents the tracking control method of robotic systems with uncertainties using self recurrent wavelet neural network (SRWNN) via the backstepping design technique. The SRWNN is used as the uncertainty observer of the robotic systems. The adaptation laws for weights of the robotic systems are induced from the Lyapunov stability theorem, which are used for on-line controlling robotic systems. Computer simulations of a three-link robot manipulator with uncertainties verify the validity of the proposed SRWNN controller.

  • This paper deals with the attitude control of an underactuated spacecraft that has fewer than three actuators. Even though such spacecrafts are known as uncontrollable, restricted missions are possible with controlling two-axis attitude angles. A variable speed control moment gyroscope is considered as an actuator. It is a kind of momentum exchange device and it shows highly nonlinear dynamical properties. Speed commands are generated by kinematic equations represented by Euler angles. A control law, that is designed to make a spacecraft follow the speed commands, is derived by the backstepping method. Angular speeds are estimated from the attitude measurements. Several estimation methods have been compared.
