  • In this paper, we propose a direct robust adaptive backstepping speed controller for induction motors system. A robust adaptive backstepping controller is designed using high order neural networks(HONN), which avoids the singularity problem in adaptive nonlinear control. The stability of the resulting adaptive system with proposed adaptive controller is guaranteed by suitable choosing the design parameter and initial conditions. HONN are used to approximate most of uncertainties which are derived from unknown motor parameters, load torque disturbances and unknown nonlinearities. The applicability of the proposed scheme is tested simulation.

  • In this paper, a robust nonlinear excitation controller is proposed to achieve both voltage regulation and system stability enhancement for single machine-infinite power systems. The proposed method employs backstepping technique and combines this with an adaptation algorithm for estimating the effective reactance of transmission line, thereby leading to adaptive nonlinear control. Simulation results show that power that angle stabilization as well as voltage regulation is achieved in a satisfactory manner, regardless of the system operating conditions and system structure.

  • A robust nonlinear observer, utilizing the sliding mode concept, is developed for the dynamic positioning of ships. The observer provides the estimates of linear velocities of the ship and bias from slowly varying environmental loads. It also filters out wave frequency motion to avoid wear of actuators and excessive fuel consumption. The main advantage of the proposed observer is in its robustness. Especially, the observer structure with a saturation function makes the proposed observer robust against neglected nonlinearties, disturbances and uncertainties. Since the mathematical model of DP ships is difficult to obtain and includes uncertainties and disturbances, it is very important for the observer to be robust. A nonlinear output feedback controller is derives based on the developed observer using the observer backstepping technique, and the global stability of the observer and control law is shown by Lyapunov stability theory.. A set of simulation was carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed observer for dynamic positioning of ships.

  • Backstepping procedures for output-feedback of nonlinear systems are considered. For these systems, a sliding mode cascade observer to estimate derivatives of the output is builded. In the 1st step of the observer, the output is estimated, and the 1st order derivative of the output is estimated via the 2nd step of the observer. Also, n-th order derivative of the output is estimated in the n+1th step of the observer. Observer errors and tracking errors converge to a residual set close to zero asymptotically.

  • Recently, aircraft is designed to have high maneuverable at high angle of attack. However, it is very hard to obtain the accurate dynamic model for the high performance, because aerodynamic characteristics are nonlinear and include a lot of uncertainties. Therefore, nonlinear controller without considering uncertainties may degrade the control system performance. On this paper, to overcome these defects, the neural networks based adaptive nonlinear controller is proposed making use of the backstepping technique. Neural networks are implemented to guarantee robustness to uncertainties caused by aerodynamic coefficients variation. The main feature of the proposed controller is that the adaptive controller is developed under the assumption ...

  • Managing with the presence of sea ice is the primary challenge in the operation of floating platforms in the Arctic region. It is widely accepted that offshore structures operating in Arctic conditions need station-keeping methods as well as ice management by icebreakers. Dynamic Positioning (DP) is one of the station-keeping methods that can provide mobility and flexibility in marine operations. The presence of sea ice generates complex external forces and moments acting on the vessel, which need to be counteracted by the DP system. In this paper, an icevaning control algorithm is proposed that enables Arctic offshore vessels to perform DP operations. The proposed icevaning control enables each vessel to be oriented toward the direction of the mean environmental force induced by ice drifting so as to improve the operational safety and reduce the overall thruster power consumption by having minimum external disturbances naturally. A mathematical model of an Arctic offshore vessel is summarized for the development of the new icevaning control algorithm. To determine the icevaning action of the Arctic offshore vessel without any measurements and estimation of ice conditions including ice drift, task and null space are defined in the vessel model, and the control law is formulated in the task space. A backstepping technique is utilized to handle the nonlinearity of the Arctic offshore vessel's dynamic model, and the Lyapunov stability theory is applied to guarantee the stability of the proposed icevaning control algorithm. Experiments are conducted in the ice tank of the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

A certain type of such systems can be recursively adaptively partially stabilized. The bifurcation analysis reveals the nature of the closed loop system.

  • In this paper, we propose a switching control method for a class of 2nd order nonlinear systems with single input. The main idea is to switch the control law before the trajectory of the solution arrives at singular hyperplanes which are defined by the denominator of the control law. The proposed method can handle a class of nonlinear systems which is difficult to be stabilized by the existing methods such as feedback linearization, backstepping, control Lyapunov function, and sliding mode control.
