This paper proposes a driving current control method for a back light unit (BLU), consisting of red, green, and blue (RGB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs), whereby an RGB optical sensor is used to check the output color stimulus variation to enable a time-stable color stimulus for light emission by the RGB LED BLU. First, to obtain the present color stimulus information of the RGB LED BLU, an RGB to XYZ transform matrix is derived to enable CIEXYZ values to be calculated for the RGB LED BLU from the output values of an RGB optical sensor. The elements of the RGB to XYZ transform matrix are polynomial coefficients resulting from a polynomial regression. Next, to obtain the proper duty control values for the current supplied to the RGB LEDs, an XYZ to Duty transform matrix is derived to calculate the duty control values for the RGB LEDs from the target CIEXYZ values. The data used to derive the XYZ to Duty transform matrix are the CIEXYZ values for the RGB LED BLU estimated from the output values of the RGB optical sensor and corresponding duty control values applied to the RGB LEDs for the present, first preceding, and second preceding sequential check points. With every fixed-interval check of the color stimulus of the RGB LED BLU, the XYZ to Duty transform matrix changes adaptively according to the present lighting condition of the RGB LED BLU, thereby allowing the RGB LED BLU to emit the target color stimulus in a time-stable format regardless of changes in the lighting condition of the RGB LEDs.
We have investigated the effect of each ingredient in the light diffusing film (LDF) which was used as backlight unit (BLU) of TFT-LCD TV on physical, electrical, thermal and optical properties of LDF. In anti-blocking layer, the excellent anti-blocking ability was obtained when 0.5~1.5 wt% of acrylic bead was added, and good decay-time and water-stability were shown when 0.8 wt% of tertiary ammonium salt was added. Optimal results for adhesion strength, curing rates and flexibility on the surface of PET film have been obtained in the light diffusing layer by using acrylic polyol as a binder resin, and by addition of 30~35 wt% non-yellowing type HDI crosslinker. In addition, the highest normal luminance value was obtained by addition of 250 wt% poly-dispersive polystyrene ($20{\mu}m$ PS) and polymethylmethacrylate ($20{\mu}m$ PMMA) beads into the binder resin (100 wt%). The higher normal luminance could be got for PMMA beads than PS beads because of the transmittance difference.

In this study, it was investigated about optical simulation in high brightness and high uniformity general lighting using glass light guide plate. And we adopt edge-light emission type light plate. Edge-light type lighting has been used LCD application, especially note PC or smart phone backlight unit. Because it had the good properties such as slim shape and light weight. We thought this type was suitable for general lighting application such as wall attached type or ceiling mount type. But many of edge-light type lighting had problems. It called slanted output light rays. That was main key parameter how could control the direction of output light rays. We investigated the solution of this problems, using ray tracing method, we recognized the major fact of the solution relied on the geometric structure of diffusing dot shape. We set the conditions of aspect ratio in diffusing dot shape such as 0.5 to 1. And, at first, we designed diffusing dots shape based on the results of optical simulation and made specimen. as above condition, and acquired good result in confirming dots shape such as the value of the output rays's peak angle was around 75 degrees. And good light distribution characteristics were measured by slated spectro-radiometer. It was shown that the effective ways of designing light distribution characteristics using optical simulation such as ray tracing linear method for making general lighting using glass light guide plate.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive for field emitter because of their outstanding electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Several applications using CNTs as field emitters have been demonstrated such as field emission display (FED), backlight unit (BLU), and X-ray source. In this study, we fabricated a CNT cathode using transparent ultra-thin CNT film. First, CNT aqueous solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). To obtain the CNT film, the CNT solution in a milliliter or even several tens of micro-litters was deposited onto a porous alumina membrane through vacuum filtration process. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated by the 3 M NaOH solution and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate of $0.5\times0.5cm^2$ with a film mask. The transmittance of as-prepared ultra-thin CNT films measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer was 68~97%, depending on the amount of CNTs dispersed in an aqueous solution. Roller activation, which is a essential process to improve the field emission characteristics of CNT films, increased the UV-Vis transmittance up to 93~98%. This study presents SEM morphology of CNT emitters and their field emission properties according to the concentration of CNTs in an aqueous solutions. Since the ultra-thin CNT emitters prepared from the solutions show a high peak current density of field emission comparable to that of the paste-base CNT emitters and do not contain outgassing sources such as organic binders, they are considered to be very promising for small-size-but-high-end applications including X-ray sources and microwave power amplifiers.

The continuing demand for increasingly slimmer and brighter liquid crystal display (LCD) panels has led to an increased focus on the role of light guide panels (LGPs) or optical films that are used to obtain diffuse, uniform light from the backlight unit (BLU). The most basic process in the production of such BLU components is the micromachining of V-shaped grooves. Thus, given the current trend, micromachining of V-shaped grooves is expected to play increasingly important roles in today's manufacturing technology. LCD BLUs comprise various optical elements such as a LGP, diffuser sheet, prism sheet, and protector sheet with V-shaped grooves. High-aspect-ratio patterns are required to reduce the number of sheets and enhance light efficiency, but there is a limit to the aspect ratio achievable for a given material and cutting tool. Therefore, this study comprised a series of experimental evaluations conducted to determine the machining limit in microcutting V-shaped grooves on electroless nickel plated die materials when using single-crystal diamond tools with point angles of $20^{\circ}-80^{\circ}$. Cutting performance was evaluated at various cutting speeds and depths of cut using different machining methods and machine tools. The experimental results are that V-shaped patterns with angles of $80^{\circ}$ or up can be realized regardless of the machining conditions and equipment. Moreover, the feed rate has little effect on machinability, and it is thought that the fly-cut method is more efficient for shallow patterns.
This paper presents a design of LLC resonant converter IC for LED backlight unit based on PFM/PWM dual-mode feedback. Dual output LLC resonant architecture with a single inductor is proposed, where the master output is controlled by the PFM and slave output is controlled by the PWM. To regulate the master output PFM is used as feedback to control the frequency of the power switch. On the other hand, PWM feedback is used to control the pulse width of the power switch and to regulate the slave output. This chip is fabricated in 0.35um 2P3M BC(Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) Process and the die area is $2.3mm{\times}2.2mm$. Current consumptions is 26mA from 5V supply.
Characterization of the microweld CCFL electrode for the TFT-LCD backlight unit was carried out in terms of the glass beading heat treatment conditions. We evaluate the weld zone and parent metal of the microweld CCFL electrodes that were exposed to simulated glass beading heat treatment. The CCFL electrode was composed of the cup made with pure Ni, the pin made with pure Mo and the lead wire made with Ni-Mn alloy. Each part of the electrode was assembled together by micro spot welding process and then the assembled electrodes were exposed to simulated glass beading temperatures of $700^{\circ}C,\;750^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the microweld CCFL electrode were observed by using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and EDS. Micro-tensile and microhardness test were also carried out. The results indicated that the grain coarsening in the HAZs(heat affected zones) for both the cup-pin weld and pin-lead wire were exhibited and the grain coarsening of the HAZ for the cup and the lead wire was more obvious than the HAZ of the pin. The micro-tensile test revealed that the fracture occurred at the cup-pin weld zone for all test conditions. The fracture surface could be classified into two parts such as pin portion and cup portion including weld nugget. The failure was seemed to be initiated from the boundary between nugget and pin through the weld joint. The result of the microhardness measurement exhibited that the relatively low hardness value, about 105HV was recorded at the HAZ of the cup. This value was about 50% less than that of the original value of the cup. The reduction of the microhardness was considered as the cause of the grain coarsening due to welding process. It was also appeared that there was no change in electric resistance for the standard electrodes and heat treated electrodes.

To improve the image quality and lower the power consumption of the mobile applications, it is the one of the best candidate to control the backlight unit of the LCD module with ambient light. Ambient light sensor and readout circuit were integrated in LCD panel for the mobile applications, and we designed them with LTPS TFT. We proposed noble start-up correction in order to correct the variation of the photo sensors in each panel. We used time-to-digital method for converting photo current to digital data. To effectively merge time-to-digital method with start-up correction, we proposed noble dual slope correction method. The entire readout circuit was designed and estimated with LTPS TFT process. The readout circuit has very simple and stable structure and timing, so it is suitable for LTPS TFT process. The readout circuit can correct the variation of the photo sensors without an additional equipment, and it outputs the 4-levels digital data per decade for input luminance that has a dynamic range of 60dB. The readout rate is 100 times/sec, and the linearity error for digital conversion is less than 18%.

EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp) for LCD displays are analyzed on electrical and optical characteristics by various electrode length. The electrodes of EEFL are coated at the outside of the glass tube. Brightness and efficiency of the EEFL are affected on lamp impedance characteristic. So, the experimental models are proposed for analysis and measurements of the brightness and efficiency of the lamps according to the electrode length. The sample of LCD backlight unit is used for these experiments, EEFL arrayed BLU of 32' for commercial TV display. The parameters of the experiments were quantised for simple result reading as the length of electrodes as 15, 23 and 30 mm. The inverter was designed and manufactured in the laboratory as the Full-Bridge switching inverter. The feature of the output were measured on voltages about 1000 - 1400V at the currents of 11 - 29 mA and the brightness $15,000\;cd/m^2-40,000\;cd/m^2$. The experiments have shown that the brightness are increased by increasing of the electrode lengths which have the lamp currents increased. But at an certain conditions, the brightness and efficiency were decreased because of unmatched between the inverter output and lamp impedance. The optimum applications of the EEFL BLU of 32' in this experiments have been shown to choose the parameters for driving frequencies of 100 kHz - 150 kHz, the brightness of $18,000-19,000\;cd/m^2$ and efficiencies of 40 - 45 lm/w.

This paper has proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new BLU using an LED and an acryl, which is specially focused on the implementation about the guiding effect of an acryl luminous by the LED. While the conventional BLU using a fluorescent lamp is generally and widely used, it shows big power consumption with a short life even more too thick to hold on the wall. To solve such demerits, we propose a new method for a BLU using an LED and an acryl in this paper. This BLU system has various scratches on the surface of acryl to get diffusion effect of light, and has been included an embedded board that can dynamically control the colors and the intensity of the BLU through the Internet. We have conducted computer simulations to find out the optimal scratch pattern on the surface of the acryl for the backlight system. Based on the resulted out simulation. The the optimal scratch pattern signs has been developed. The simulation result shows 2,673Lux an average for a luminous intensity test, and the other hand, experiential result shows 2,554Lux. From the experiments, it is possible for the proposed BLU system to be used for real advertisements.
