  • In this letter, we present an experimental comparative study of background subtraction algorithms for soccer video analysis. We investigated five different background subtraction algorithms under the same experimental setup. For the quantitative comparison, we employed the precision, recall, and F-measure. We believe that this comprehensive comparative study serves as a reference point and guide for developers and practitioners in choosing an appropriate background subtraction algorithm adopted for building intelligent soccer video analysis systems.

  • In this paper, we suggest a method of detecting defects by applying Hough transform and least squares on ceramic images obtained from non-destructive testing. In the ceramic images obtained from non-destructive testing, the background area, where the defect does not exist, commonly show gradual change of luminosity in vertical direction. In order to extract the background area which is going to be used in the detection of defects, Hough transform is performed to rotate the ceramic image in a way that the direction of overall luminosity change lies in the vertical direction as much as possible. Least squares are then applied on the rotated image to approximate the contrast value of the background area. The extracted background area is used for extracting defects from the ceramic images. In this paper we applied this method on ceramic images acquired from non-destructive testing. It was confirmed that extracted background area could be effectively applied for searching the section where the defect exists and detecting the defect.

  • This paper proposes detection of view reversal in a stereo video using depth map and motion vector information. We obtain a depth map by using a stereo matching and divide the input image into foreground and background. Next, we obtain a motion vector field by using a motion estimation. In general, an occluded region is in background when foreground goes toward the adjacent background or the background goes toward the adjacent foreground. But, we will face with the change of foreground and background because their depths also change when view reversal occurs. Therefore, we can detect the view reversal in stereo videos by using the observation that the foreground goes toward the adjacent background or the background goes toward the adjacent foreground. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves good detection rate when the background region is sufficiently occluded by the moving foreground.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive background image generation method based on the frame difference for traffic monitoring. The performance of the conventional method is limited when there are more vehicles due to traffic Jam. To improve on this, we use frame differencing to separate vehicles from background in frame differencing, we adopt selective approach by using part of the image not considered as vehicle fer extraction of background. The proposed method generates background more efficiently than conventional methods even in the presence of heavy traffic.

  • It is known as a difficult problem to recognize text-background mixed documents. In this paper a new string extraction algorithm, using mathematical morphology for the document consisting of text and overlapped periodic background pattern, is proposed. The algorithm consists of pattern periodicity feature extraction and background removal. The extracted pattern periodicity feature is used to determine the shape of structuring elements for morphological pre- and post-processing to remove background. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm over the existing one is also verified through the experiments with various test documents.

  • This paper proposes a background image extraction algorithm for traffic environment analysis in a school zone. The proposed algorithm solves the problems by level changes and stationary objects to be occurred frequently in traffic environment. For the former, it renews rapidly the background image toward the current frame using a fast Sima-Delta algorithm and for the latter, it excludes the stationary objects from the background image by detecting dynamic regions using a just previous frame and a background image averaged for a long time. The results of experiments show that the proposed algorithm adapts quickly itself to level change well, and reduces about 40~80% of SAD in background region in comparison with the conventional algorithms.

  • In the intelligent video surveillance system, moving objects generally are detected by calculating difference between background and input image. However formation of reliable background is known to be still challenging task because it is hard to cope with the complicated background. In this paper we propose an adaptive background formation algorithm considering stationary object. At first, the initial background is formed by averaging the initial N frames. Object detection is performed by comparing the current input image and background. If the object is at a stop for a long time, we consider the object as stationary object and background is replaced with the stationary object. On the other hand, if the object is a moving object, the pixels in the object are not reflected for background modification. Because the proposed algorithm considers gradual illuminance change, slow moving object and stationary object, we can form background adaptively and robustly which has been shown by experimental results.

  • In this paper, I propose an automatic background extraction method and continuous background updating technique. Because there is a movement of a vehicle and a change of a background is feeble, the area moving through the time axis is looked for and a background and a vehicle image is divided. A way to give dynamically the threshold which divides the image frame into a vehicle image and the background in a space is enforced. Through the repetition of the above-mentioned process, the background pictorial image is gained. Using the karlman filter technique, the update is done so that a background image can obey a climate situation and an environmental change in day and night. A background image processed algorithm is better than the existent one. Through simulation, the feasibility of the algorithm has been verified.

  • In order to solve the problem of uncovered background region due to the region-due to the region-based motion estimation, this paper presents a new method which generates the uncovered region memory using motion estimation and shows the application of the algorithm for very low bit rate video coding. The proposed algorithm can be briefly described as follows it detects the changed region by using the information of FD(frame difference) and segmentation, and then as for only that region the backward motion estimation without transmission of shape information is done. Therefore, from only motion information the uncovered background region memory is generated and updated. The contents stored in the uncovered background region memory are referred whenever the uncovered region comes into existence. The regions with large prediction error are transformed and coded by using DCT. As results of simulation, the proposed algorithm shows the superior improvement in the subjective and objective image quality due to the remarkable reduction of transmission bits for prediction error.

  • This paper propose a statistical color model of background extraction base on Hue-Saturation-Value(HSV) color space, instead of the traditional RGB space, and shows that it provides a better use of the color information. HSV color space corresponds closely to the human perception of color and it has revealed more accuracy to distinguish shadows [3] [4]. The key feature of this segmentation method is based on processing hue component of color in HSV color space on image area. The HSV color model is used, its color components are efficiently analyzed and treated separately so that the proposed algorithm can adapt to different environmental illumination condition and shadows. Polar and linear statistical operations are used to calculate the background from the video frames. The experimental results show that the proposed background subtraction method can automatically segment video objects robustly and accurately in various illuminating and shadow environments.
