The magnitudes of wall thrust acting on quay walls can easily vary due to the development of excess pore pressure in backfill. In this research, a new displacement model was proposed to predict the displacement of the wall considering such magnitude variations of the wall thrust. This model is based on Newmark sliding block concept. The magnitude variation of the wall thrust is modelled by varying the magnitude of yield acceleration. The parametric study was performed to analyze the effects of input parameters on the seismic displacement of the wall, and the validity of this model was verified by comparing its predicted displacements with those of Is shaking table tests.

Although self-propelled artilleries are mobile equipment, they need their own covered-positions for survival against preemptive strikes. The most important military requirement is enough protective capacity against blast pressure caused by explosion. This paper aims to assess the protective capacity of the newly-placed concrete box-type artillery positions using accurate structural geometric models as well as soil-structure interaction analysis. The commercial program is used to model the structural geometry of the positions. In order to describe the correct wave propagation in the backfill along with soil-structure interaction, used parameters in shock equation of state are selected based on the related studies as well as theories and then their final results are verified with the ones calculated with empirical equations in the US Unified Facility Criteria. In sum, it could be concluded that the protective capacity of the newly-built positions satisfies the protective structural requirement.
In this study, an improved modular arch system with the lower arch space composed of a precast arch block and an outrigger was proposed as an underground culvert, and its applicability and structural behaviors were confirmed. This modular arch culvert structure with vertical walls was designed using precast blocks and by adjusting the placement spacing of concrete blocks to the upper part form an arch shape and the lower part form a vertical wall shape, based on previously researched modular arch systems. Owing to the vertical wall of the proposed modular arch system, it is possible to secure a load-carrying capacity and an arch space that can sufficiently resist the earth pressure generated from the backfill soil and loading on the arch system. To verify the structural characteristics, and applicability of the proposed modular precast arch culvert structure, a full-scale modular culvert specimen was fabricated, and a loading test was conducted. By examining its construction process and loading test results, the applicability and constructability of the proposed structure were analyzed along with its structural characteristics. In addition, its the structural predictability and safety for the applicability were evaluated by comparing the construction process and loading test results with the FE analysis results.
This paper describes the results of model experiments in the laboratory, which were conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls according to different surcharge loads and reinforcement types. The model walls were built in the box having dimension, 100 cm tall, 140 cm long, and 100cm wide. Three types of geosynthetics, geonet, geogrid A and geogrid B, are used as the reinforcements. Decomposed granite soil (SM) was used as a backfill material. Seven model walls are constructed and tested. After the construction of the model wall, the LVDTs are installed to obtain the displacements of the wall face. As the results of the model tests, the maximum horizontal displacements of the model walls occurred due to uniform surcharge pressure were measured at the 0.7H from the bottom of the wall. The more the reinforcement strength increases, the more the wall displacements decrease, and also the reduction ratio of the wall displacement decrease with increasing the surcharge pressure.
This paper is an experimental result of investigating lateral soil movements at piled bridge abutments by using the centrifuge model facility. Three different centrifuge model experiments, changing the methods of ground improvement at bridge abutment on the soft clayey soil (no improvement, preconsolidation and plastic board drains (PBD), sand compaction pile (SCP) + PBD), were carried out to figure out which method is the most appropriate for resisting against the lateral soil movements. In the centrifuge modelling, construction process in field was reconstructed as close as possible. Displacements of abutment model, ground movement, vertical earth pressure, cone resistance after soil improvement and distribution of water content were monitored during and after centrifuge model tests. As results of centrifuge model experiments, preconsolidation method with PBD was found to be the most effective against the lateral soil movement by analyzing results about displacements of abutment model, ground movement and cone resistance. Increase of shear strength by preconsolidation method resulted in increasing the resistance against lateral soil movement effectively although SCP could mobilize the resistance against lateral soil movement. It was also found that installment with PBD beneath the backfill of bridge abutment induced effective drainage of excess pore water pressure during the consolidation by embanking at the back of the abutment and resulted in increasing the shear strength of clay soil foundation and eventually increasing the resistance of lateral soil movement against piles of bridge abutment.

Dynamic behaviors of the tunnel linings of curved tunnels with various curvatures are investigated to examine the effect of wind loads due to passing vehicles. In the case without backfill, the responses of the tunnel lining should be considered to examine the clearance of the lining. A steel tunnel lining is selected to see the influence of the wind load upon the tunnel lining more clearly. The wind pressure upon the lining is simplified into the pressure and suction while the vehicle passing the loading positions. As the radius of curvature decreases, the response decreases, showing that the strength against the deformation is found to increase since the asymmetry of the deformation shape is reduced. It is found that the responses increase as the passing vehicle speed increases.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation into the behavior of retaining wall subject to cycles of freezing and thawing due to seasonal temperature change. The thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled finite element modeling strategy was first established to simulate the wall behavior. A series of finite element analyses were then performed on a range of conditions representing seasonal temperature change characteristics. The results indicated that the average freezing temperature and the number of cycles of freezing and thawing were the primary influencing factors for the wall behavior. Also revealed was that the duration of freezing period does not significantly affect the wall displacement and the lateral earth pressure, and that the earth pressure on the wall does not significantly change due to the freezing and thawing action suggesting that the increase in the wall displacement during the freezing and thawing action may be attributed to degradation of backfill due to the freezing and thawing action.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation into the behavior of retaining wall subject to cycles of wetting and drying due to rainfall. The stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modeling strategy was first established for stimulating the wall behavior. A series of finite element analyses were then performed on a range of conditions including different rainfall and backfill conditions. The results indicated that the rainfall intensity was the primary influencing factor for the wall behavior. Also revealed was that the pre-rainfall condition determines the magnitudes and the distribution of matric suction which in fact has a significant impact on the behavior of wall during a major rainfall. This result demonstrates the importance of incorporating the pre-rainfall condition for numerical modeling of walls during heavy rainfall. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.
A series of shaking table model tests were performed to verify the validity of similitude law, which is suggested by lai (1989) to simulate the dynamic behavior of soil-fluid-structure system for is shaking table tests. In the tests, the similitude law suggested by lai was applied to determine the length and the time scaling factors. Also, the steady state concept was used in determining the density of model backfill soil, which is a key factor in simulating the development of excess pore pressure during shaking. The similitude law was verified by checking whether three different sizes of quay walls show the identical behavior or not. The similar responses of acceleration, excess pore pressure and horizontal displacement of walls were obtained far the small and large models. However, the medium model showed larger responses than those of the small and large models because of the resonance between the frequency of input acceleration and the natural frequency of the wall system. In addition, the vertical displacement and rotational angle of the walls became larger with the increase of model size.
In this study, the failure and deformation characteristics of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) which is a primary tunnel support was investigated to find out ground-support mutual behavior. To this end, a mock-up of a tunnel was made and experimented with the conditions of lateral earth pressure coefficient 0.5 and 1.0. During the tests, 11 hydraulic cylinders were used for loading. for better simulation of the lateral earth pressure effect, these cylinders were controlled separately by two groups; crown and side wall. Meanwhile, the deformation of shotcrete was measured by 11 LVDTs. Backfill material was also used fur better load transfer from hydraulic cylinders to shotcrete. For the validation of the mock-up test results, 3D numerical analysis is carried out. To do numerical analysis under the same condition as a mock-up test, the load history curve which was obtained during the test was tried to be simulated using an individual FISH routine in the numerical analysis.
