Effect of Red-emitting Sr2.41F2.59B20.03O74.8:Eu0.12,Sm0.048 Phosphor on Color Rendering Index and Luminous Efficacy of White LEDs

  • Color rendering index (CRI) and luminous efficacy (LE) are two key performance factors of white LEDs (WLED). While most recent works in optics focus on methodology to improve these factors, little attention has been dedicated to chemical composition of materials. This paper studies the effect of $Sr_{2.4}1F_{2.59}B_{20.03}O_{74.8}:Eu_{0.12},Sm_{0.048}$ phosphor (SrSm), in terms of concentration and particle size on CRI and LE of 8500 K - WLEDs. Importantly, the molar mass of the componential ions in SrSm are calculated to shed light on the connection between the chemical composition of the material of interest and the performance of WLEDs. Results show that CRI can be improved to a value of around 86 by boosting red-light components in WLEDs, for all 3 major configurations: conformal, in-cup, and remote phosphor. CRI value tends to decrease with larger size of particles, while LE value goes in the reverse direction. On the other hand, both CRI and LE appear to be reduced at higher concentration of SrSm. This light attenuation is analyzed by using the Lambert-Beer law and Mie-scattering theory.

A Numerical Solution of Transport of Mono- and Tri-valent Cations during Steady Water Flow in a Binary Exchange System

  • A one-dimensional transport of displacing monovalent ion, $A^+$, and a trivalent ion being displaced, $B^{3+}^ in a porous exchange system such as soil was approximated using the Crank-Nicolson implicit finite difference technique and the Thomas algorithm in tandem. The variations in the concentration profile were investigated by varying the ion-exchange equilibrium constant (k) of ion-exchange reactions, the influent concentrations, and the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the exchanger, under constant flux condition of pore water and dispersion coefficient. A higher value of k resulted in a greater removal of the native ion, behind the sharper advancing front of displacing ion, while the magnitude of the penetration distance of $A^+$ was not great. As the CEC increased, the equivalent fraction of $B^{3+}^ initially in the soil was greater, thus indicating that a higher CEC adsorbed trivalent cations preferentially over monovalent ions. Mass balance error from simulation results was less than 1%, indicating this model accounted for instantaneous charge balance fairly well.

  • 대향타겟트형 스파터기에서 BaO-l2Fe 복합타겟트를 사용하고 50% $O_2$+Ar 스파터가스를 사용한 반응성 프라즈마를 스펙트로스포프법으로 검진하였다. 프라즈마의 스펙트럼은 Ba, B$a^+$, Fe, FeO, F$e^+$, Ar, $Ar^+$, O, $O^+$의 피크로 이루어져 있었으며 타겟트로 부터 멀어짐에 따라 이온의 상대강도는 중성원소의 그것에 비하여 더 감소하였다.

무전해 코발트계 석출막에 미치는 기판의 영향 (Effect of Substrate on Electroless Co-Base Deposited Films)

  • The deposition behavior and structural and magnetic properties of electroless Co-B and Co-Fe-B deposits, as well as the amorphous ribbon substrates, were investigated. These Co-based alloy deposits exhibited characteristic polycrystalline structures and surface morphology and magnetic properties that were dependent on the type of amorphous substrates. The catalytic activity sequence of the amorphous ribbon electrodes for anodic oxidation of DMAB was estimated from the current density-potential curve in the anodic partial electrolytic bath that did not contain the metal ions. Both the deposition rate and potential in the initial region were obtained in order of the catalytic activity, depending on the alloy compositions of the substrates. The deposition rate linearly varied against the deposition time. The initial deposition potential may have also determined the structural and magnetic properties of the deposit based on the thickness of ${\mu}m$ order. Furthermore, a basic study of the electroless deposition processes on an amorphous ribbon substrate has been carried out in connection with the structural and magnetic properties of the deposits.

  • Effects of surface defect distribution on flame instability during flame-surface interaction are experimentally investigated. To examine chemical quenching phenomenon which is caused by radical adsorption and recombination processes on the surface, thermally grown silicon oxide plates with well-defined defect density were prepared. ion implantation technique was used to control the number of defects, i.e. oxygen vacancies. In an attempt to preferentially remove oxygen atoms from silicon dioxide surface, argon ions with low energy level from 3keV to 5keV were irradiated at the incident angle of $60^{\circ}$. Compositional and structural modification of $SiO_2$ induced by low-energy $Ar^+$ ion irradiation has been characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). It has been found that as the ion energy is increased, the number of structural defect is also increased and non-stoichiometric condition of $SiO_x({\le}2)$ is enhanced.

Superparamagnetic Properties of Ni0.7Zn0.3Fe2O4 Nanoparticles

  • Nanoparticles $Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3}Fe_2O_4$ is fabricated by a sol-gel method. The magnetic and structural properties of powders were investigated with XRD, SEM, $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, and VSM. $Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3}Fe_2O_4$ powders annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ have a spinel structure and behaved superparamagnetically. The estimated size of $Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticle is about 11 nm. $Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3}Fe_2O_4$ annealed at 400 and $500^{\circ}C$ has a typical spinel structure and is ferrimagnetic in nature. The isomer shifts indicate that the iron ions were ferric at the tetrahedral (A) and the octahedral (B). Blocking temperature $(T_B)\;of\;Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3}Fe_2O_4$ nanoparticle is about 260 K. The magnetic anisotropy constant of $Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3}Fe_2O_4$ annealed $300^{\circ}C$ were calculated to be $1.7X10^6\;ergs/cm^3$. Also, temperature of the sample increased up to $43^{\circ}C$ within 7 minutes under AC magnetic field of 7 MHz.

형광 나노입자: 합성 및 응용 (Fluorescent Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Applications)

  • Fluorescent nanoparticles are characterized by their unique properties such as luminescence, optical transparency, and sensitivity to various chemical environments. For example, semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots), which are nanophosphors doped with transition metal or rare earth ions, can be classified as fluorescent nanoparticles. Tuning their optical and physico-chemical properties can be carried out by considering and taking advantage of nanoscale effects. For instance, quantum confinement causes a much higher fluorescence with nanoparticles than with their bulk counterparts. Recently, various types of fluorescent nanoparticles have been synthesized to extend their applications to other fields. In this study, State-of-the-art fluorescent nanoparticles are reviewed with emphasis on their analytical and anti-counterfeiting applications and synthesis processes. Moreover, the fundamental principles behind the exceptional properties of fluorescent nanoparticles are discussed.

$Mg_{0.16}Zn_{0.84}Te:Co $단결정 성장과 광흡수 특성 (Crystal growth and optical absorption of $Mg_{0.16}Zn_{0.84}Te:Co $ single crystal)

  • 수직 Bridgman방법으로 $Mg_{0.18}Zn_{0.84}$Te:Co(Co:0.01 mole%)단결정을 성장시켰다. 성장된 단결정의 결정구조와 광흡수 spectra를 연구하였다. X 선 회절무늬로부터 성장된 단결정의 구조는 cubic구조이었고 격자상수 a=6.1422 $\AA$이었다. 광흡수 측정결과 $Co^{2+}$ 이온에 기인된 $A-band:^4A_2(^4F){\to}^4T_2(^4F),\; B-band:^4A_2(^4F){\to}^4T_1(^4F), C- band:^4A_2(^4F){\to}^4T_1(^4P)$의 intracenter transition과, 흡수단 근처의 charge transfer에 의한 photoionization transition에 관계된 D-band를 550-770 nm의 파장영역에서 관측하였다. 또한 결정장 이론에 의해 결정매개변수(Dq)와 Racah parameter(B)를 결정하였다.

산화광물을 이용한 수중의 망간-EDTA, 불소 제거 (Utilization of Mineral Oxides to Attenuate Mn-EDTA and Fluoride)

  • 본 연구에서는 산업폐기물로 버려지는 hematite와 ferrite를 이용하여 Mn-EDTA와 불소의 제거에 대한 실험을 행하였다. 제거율을 비교, 평가하기 위하여 무기오염물에 대하여 우수한 흡착능을 가지는 것으로 알려진 Na-bentonite를 실험에 포함하였다. Batch형태의 실험 결과, 망간에 대하여 여러 초기농도에서 ferrite-A는 48∼65 %, ferrite-B는 46∼57 %, hematite 의 경우 17∼26%o의 제거율을 갖는 것으로 나타났으며, Na-bentonite의 경우, 10∼23%의 제거율을 나타냈다. 불소의 경우에는 hematite가 53∼63%의 제거율을, ferrite-A가 54∼63%, ferrite-B는 20∼38%를 보였다. 연구 결과 Hematite와 Ferrite가 가지고 있는 특히 complex ion을 형성하는 무기 오염 물질 제거능이 Na-bentonite 보다 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 이러한 산화 광물과 Na-Bentonite 의 혼합을 통하여 차수재로서의 Na-bentonite의 역할을 증진시킬 수 있을 것이다.

Characteristics of a Novel Acinetobacter sp. and Its Kinetics in Hexavalent Chromium Bioreduction

  • Cr-B2, a Gram-negative hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] reducing bacteria, was isolated from the aerator water of an activated sludge process in the wastewater treatment facility of a dye and pigment based chemical industry. Cr-B2 exhibited a resistance for 1,100 mg/l Cr(VI) and, similarly, resistance against other heavy metal ions such as $Ni^{2+}$ (800 mg/l), $Cu^{2+}$ (600 mg/l), $Pb^{2+}$ (1,100 mg/l), $Cd^{2+}$ (350 mg/l), $ZN^{2+}$ (700 mg/l), and $Fe^{3+}$ (1,000 mg/l), and against selected antibiotics. Cr-B2 was observed to efficiently reduce 200 mg/l Cr(VI) completely in both nutrient and LB media, and could convert Cr(VI) to Cr(III) aerobically. Cr(VI) reduction kinetics followed allosteric enzyme kinetics. The $K_m$ values were found to be 43.11 mg/l for nutrient media and 38.05 mg/l for LB media. $V_{max}$ values of 13.17 mg/l/h and 12.53 mg/l/h were obtained for nutrient media and LB media, respectively, and the cooperativity coefficients (n) were found to be 8.47 and 3.49, respectively, indicating positive cooperativity in both cases. SEM analysis showed the formation of wrinkles and depressions in the cells when exposed to 800 mg/l Cr(VI) concentration. The organism was seen to exhibit pleomorphic behavior. Cr-B2 was identified on the basis of morphological, biochemical, and partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing chracterizations and found to be Acinetobacter sp.
