Recently, much attention is imposed on the design of the fuel assemblies in the Pressurized Light Water Reactor (PWR). Spacer grid is one of the main structural components in a fuel assembly. It supports fuel rods, guides cooling water and protects the system from the external impact loads. Various space grids have been proposed and new designs are also being created. In this research, a new spacer grid is designed by the axiomatic approach. The Independence Axiom is utilized for the design. For conceptual design, functional requirements (FRs) are defined and corresponding design parameters (DPs) are found to satisfy FRs in sequence. Overall configuration and shapes are determined in this process. Detail design is carried out based on the result of the axiomatic design. For the detail design, the system performances are evaluated by using linear and nonlinear finite element analysis. The dimensions are determined by optimization. Some commercial codes are utilized for the analysis and design.
To efficiently design safety-critical systems such as nuclear power plants, with the requirement of high reliability, methodologies allowing for rigorous interactions between the synthesis and analysis processes have been proposed. This paper attempts to develop a reliability-centered design framework through an interactive process between Axiomatic Design (AD) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Integrating AD and FTA into a single framework appears to be a viable solution, as they compliment each other with their unique advantages. AD provides a systematic synthesis tool while FTA is commonly used as a safety analysis tool. These methodologies build a design process that is less subjective, and they enable designers to develop insights that lead to solutions with improved reliability. Due to the nature of the two methodologies, the information involved in each process is complementary: a success tree versus a fault tree. Thus, at each step a system using AD is synthesized, and its reliability is then quantified using the FT derived from the AD synthesis process. The converted FT provides an opportunity to examine the completeness of the outcome from the synthesis process. This study presents an example of the design of a Containment Heat Removal System (CHRS). A case study illustrates the process of designing the CHRS with an interactive design framework focusing on the conversion of the AD process to FTA.

Axiomatic design offers a scientific base for design in an efficient way. It is well known that it has two axioms: the Independence Axiom and the Information Axiom. Many applications of the Independence Axiom have been published, however, the Information Axiom has been mainly applied to IFR (functional requirement) - 1DP (design parameter) problems except fer a few case studies. This research presents various methods for calculation of information content. Generally, the information content is evaluated by the probability of success. The probability of success is calculated in two ranges: the FR range and the DP range. In the FR range, the graphical method is utilized with uniform distribution of the DP. In the FP range, the integration method is employed. It is noted that any distribution function of the DP can be accommodated in the integration method. The developed method can be applied to a decoupled design with multiple FRs and DPs. The developed method is extended to a coupled design and a design with a hierarchical structure of axiomatic design.

The conceptual design evaluation of Deep-Sea Manganese Nodule Miner(DSNM) based on Axiomatic Design was preformed. Functional Requirements(FRs) in functional domain and Design Parameters(DPs) in physical domain were embodied for the given concept design of DSNM. Interactions between FRs and DPs were sequentially analyzed from the first level hierarchy to the lower level hierarchy. The interactions were expressed as design matrices which showed the dependence or independence between FRs and DPs. The results showed that the design of DSNM was not a coupled one, but a decoupled. Finally, it was conceptually verified that DSNM was a good design satisfying the independence axiom of the Axiomatic Design.

To cope with the challenge from global market characterized by frequent changes in requirements, manufacturing enterprise should be able to promptly adjust its manufacturing system accordingly. Therefore, it is important to provide manufacturing system designer with an appropriate methodology to (re-)design a manufacturing system subject to requirements change. Axiomatic design theory focuses design activity mainly on functional consideration rather than physical, and has been known as effective especially in the conceptual design phase. This paper introduces an approach to apply the axiomatic design principle to manufacturing system design. It is shown that a new design solution can be reached quickly by finding design parameters for the added or revised functional requirements and thus achieving a set of functional requirements as well as design parameters that satisfy the independence axiom. Some illustrative examples are also given.

A design needs various experience and design knowledge through a whole design process. Despite of all efforts and time, it is not easy to introduce a product that meets all customer's needs and expectation in time. To achieve the product goal, designers need a set of sequential process to find appropriate design parameters and ensure customers' needs and requirements. In this research we propose a design methodology for the initial design of an excavator front group with existing QFD(Quality Function Deployment) and Axiomatic Design to satisfy customer's requirements. It turns out that the proposed methodology can support designers more effectively, objectively, and systematically.
We deal with the design of the effective block logistics operating system in shipyard. The block logistics operation is one of the critical managerial problems in shipbuilding. The block logistics operation in shipyard consists of storage operation for temporary storage in the limited storage area and transfer equipment operation of blocks from the given storage area to next process according to the block production schedule. We propose a design method of block logistics operating system based on the axiomatic design and IDEF0 method. As a result of axiomatic design, system functions are determined regarding implementation sequence. We validated the proposed design by implementation of a block logistics operating system for a large scale shipyard.

Polymer materials have a lot of merits including the low cost and the easiness of forming. For these reasons they are widely using at many manufacturing industries. Microcellular foaming process appeared at MIT in 1980s to save a quantity of material and increase mechanical properties. There are many process variables in appling microcellular foaming process to the conventional injection molding process. They can be solved by using Axiomatic Design Method which is very useful design method for designing a new product. Its main character is scientific and analytical. The information about the thickness of cavity plays an important role in making an effective foam. The goal of this research is to design mold system for advance of foaming magnitude with axiomatic design method. There is a relation between the change of cavitys thickness and foaming magnitude made after inserting a gas. R/t is a conception that indicate proportion between radius and thickness of cavity in mold system. By means of SEM observation of side surface of cavity sample, foaming magnitude of polymer in microcellular foaming process is decreasing gradually as the value of R/t is increasing. In this paper, an advanced mold system was presented by mapping the relation between functional requirements and design parameters.

For a long time, design methodologies strive to systematize the design process in order to make the practice more efficient and effective. One of such methodologies is Axiomatic Design. However, this design theory still has some problems and is not completely settled. In this paper, the new issue for the non-linear design in Axiomatic Design is suggested and the representation of system architecture by flow chart is corrected. In the case that the design equation varies as a function of the variation of DP ($\delta$DP), the design should be regarded as the nonlinear design because the design equation is not a constant. When system architectures are represented by a flow chart, all systems could not be independently represented. However, by adding the notation of the end of decoupling to the notations using in flow chart, those can be independently represented.

In product design, the initial design stage is being increasingly emphasized because it significantly influences the successive product development and production stages. However, for larger and more complex products, it is very difficult to accurately predict product reliability in the initial design stage. Various design methodologies have been proposed to resolve this issue, but maintaining reliability while exploring design alternatives is yet to be achieved. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology for conceptual design considering reliability issues that may arise in the successive detailed design stages. The methodology integrates the independency of axiomatic design and the hierarchical structure of failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA), which is a technique widely used to analyze product reliability. We applied the proposed methodology to a liquefied natural gas fuel gas supply system to verify its effectiveness in the reliability improvement of the design process.
