The method for fatigue life prediction of ball bearing is proposed applying the algorithm of contact fatigue prediction based on stress analysis. In order to do this, a series of simulation such as initial surface stress analysis, EHL analysis, subsurface stress analysis and fatigue analysis are conducted from the loading at each ball location calculated for a bearing subjected to external bearing load and contact shape function. And uniaxial fatigue tests are performed to obtain fatigue parameter of AISI 52100 steel. It was found that since stress is usually higher at the inner raceway contact than at the outer raceway contact, fatigue failure occurs on the inner raceway first. When the fatigue life calculated in the stress-based method are compared with L50 life of L-P model, Crossland criterion for the radial load increment is similar to L50 life and Dang Van criterion for the axial load increment is similar. In the case of EHL contact, there is no difference of fatigue life between dry contact and EHL contact, when maximum Hertz pressure exceeds 2.5GPa.

In general, spinal fusion surgery takes pressure off the pain induced nerves, by restoring the alignment of the spine. Therefore spinal fixation system is used to maintain the alignment of spine. In this study, a biomechanical study was performed comparing the SROM(Spinal Range Of Motion) of three types of system such as Rigid, Dynesys, and Fused system to analyze the behavior of spinal fixation system inserted in vertebra. Dynesys system, a flexible posterior stabilization system that provides an alternative to fusion, is designed to preserve inter-segmental kinematics and alleviate loading at the facet joints. In this study, SROM of inter-vertebra with spinal fixation system installed in the virtual vertebra from L4 to S1 is estimated. To compare with spinal fixation system, a simulation was performed by BRG. LifeMOD 2005.5.0 was used to create the human virtual model of spinal fixation system. Through this, each SROM of flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation of human virtual model was measured. The result demonstrates that the movement of Dynesys system was similar to normal condition through allowing the movement of lumbar.

A bellows is a component installed in the automobile exhaust system to reduce the impact from an engine. It's stiffness has a great influence on the natural frequency of the system. Therefore, it must be designed to keep the specified stiffness that requires in the system. This study present the finite element analysis of U-typed bellows using a curved conical frustum element and the shape optimal design with specified stiffness. The finite element analysis is verified by comparing with the experimental results. In the shape optimal design, the weight is considered as the cost function. The specified stiffness from the system design is transformed to equality constraints. The formulation has inequality constraints imposed on the fatigue limit, the natural frequencies, the buckling load and the manufacturing conditions. A procedure for shape optimization adopts a thickness, a corrugation radius, and a length of annular plate as optimal design variables. The external loading conditions include the axial and lateral loads with a boundary condition fixed at an end of the bellows. The recursive quadratic programming algorithm is selected to solve the problem. The result are compared with the existing bellows, and the characteristics of the bellows is investigated through the optimal design process. The optimized shape of the bellows are expected to give quite a good guideline to the practical design.

A series of three shear wall specimens were tested under constant axial stress and reversed cyclic lateral loading to evaluate the capacity of seismic retrofit proposed for the shear wall with the opening induced by remodeling. One specimen was tested in the as-built condition and the others were retrofitted prior to testing. The retrofit involved the use of carbon fiber sheets and steel plates (thickness ; 3mm) over the entire face of the wall. Specimens were 1/2-scale representations of a one-story wall in a Korean apartment building that was built in 1980. The test results showed that failure mechanism of specimens governed by shear fracture and the strength of specimens was varied with according to the retrofitting strategies.

Steel casing used to keep a borehole wall in the construction of drilled shaft increases the vertical and lateral stiffness and strength of pile, but it is usually pulled out or ignored due to the absence of standard or the problem of erosion of steel casing. In order to make use of steel casing as a permanent structure, this study carried out an experimental work for the steel-concrete composite pile. Four types of piles were used to estimate the lateral behavior of piles, which are reinforced concrete pile, steel pile and steel-concrete composite pile with and without reinforcing bar. The subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the lateral stiffness of soil in laboratory. Also, the composite loading system which can apply the axial and lateral load simultaneously was employed.
In the present study, a Finite Element Model has been developed and used to study the effect of diameter to wall thickness ratio (D/t) of steel tube filled with concrete under axial loading on its behavior and load carrying capacity. The model is verified by comparing its findings with available experimental results. Influence of thickness and area of steel tube on strength, ductility, confinement and failure mode shapes has been studied. Strength enhancement factors, load factor, confinement contribution, percentage of steel and ductility index are defined and introduced for the assessment. A parametric study by varying length and thickness of tube has been carried out. Diameter of tube kept constant and equals to 140 mm while thickness has been varied between 1 mm and 6 mm. Equations were developed to find out the ultimate load and confined concrete strength of concrete. Variation of lateral confining pressure along the length of concrete cylinder was obtained and found that it varies along the length. The increase in length of tubes has a minimal effect on strength of tube but it affects the failure mode shapes. The findings indicate that optimum use of materials can be achieved by deciding the thickness of steel tube. A better ductility index can be obtained with the use of higher thickness of tube.
In recent years, CFRP material usage in strengthening applications gradually became widespread. Especially, the studies on the strengthening of shear deficient reinforced concrete beams with CFRP strips are chosen as a subject to numerous experimental studies and research on this subject are increased rapidly. The most important variable, that is affected on the failure mode of CFRP strips and that is needed for determining the shear capacity of the strengthened reinforced concrete beams, is the strain distribution between CFRP strips and concrete. Numerous experimental studies are encountered in the literature about the determination of strain distribution between CFRP strips and concrete. However, these studies mainly focused on the CFRP strips under axial tension. There are very limited numbers of experimental and analytic studies examining the strain distribution between concrete and CFRP strips, which are under combined stresses due to the effects of shear force and bending moment. For this reason, existing experimental study in the literature is used as model for ANSYS finite element software. Nonlinear finite element analysis of RC beams strengthened against shear with CFRP strips under reverse cyclic loading is performed. The strain distributions between CFRP strips and concrete that is obtained from finite element analysis are compared with the results of experimental measurements. It is seen that the experimental results are consisted with the results derived from the finite element analysis and important findings on the strain distribution profile are reached by obtaining strain values of many points using finite element method.

Fiber models have been developed and applied to various structural elements such as shear walls, beams and columns. Only scarcely have fiber models been applied to circular foundation systems such as cast in drilled holes shafts (CIDH). In pile foundations with constraint head boundary conditions, shear deformations can easily contribute to the lateral pile response. However, soil structure interaction formulations such as the p-y method, commonly used for lateral pile design, do not include structural shear deformations in its traditional derivation method. A fiber model that couples shear and axial-bending behavior, originally developed for wall elements was modified and validated on circular cross sections (columns) before being applied to a 0.61 m diameter reinforced concrete (RC) pile with fixed head boundary conditions. The analytical response was compared to measured test results of a fixed head test pile to investigate the possible impact of pile shear deformations on the displacement, shear, and moment profiles of the pile. Results showed that shear displacements and forces are not negligible and suggest that nonlinear shear deformations for RC piles should be considered for fixed-head or similar conditions. Appropriate sensor layout is recommended to capture shear deformation when deriving p-y curves from field measurements.

Longitudinal hull girder vibration has not been occurred severely since 1960's. However, recent low speed diesel driven ships equipped with overcritical shafting system, can be excited heavily in longitudinal direction by shaft axial farce coupled with torsional vibration. In this study the characteristics of longitudinal hull girder vibration of a 73,000 deadweight bulk carrier were investigated through onboard measurement, exciter test, and 3-D FEM analysis. Results showed that the longitudinal hullgirder vibration may occur in the ship which is not set up the barred speed range in engine operation. Moreover, this vibration occurs. only during the low speed voyage in harbour depending upon the ship loading condition.

In this paper, we propose to a method to estimate the elasto-plastic buckling for single layer latticed domes. First, we assume that each member consists of the rigid zone and elastic spring at both end joint, the elastic element and three elasto-plastic spring to judge for yeilding the member. Next, the member which has most influence on buckling for structures is determined by a distributed pattern of the strain energy which is calculated through linear eigenvalue analysis. And then, normalized slenderness ratio of the element is derived considering the axial force at elastic buckling load. Later, we execute elasto-plastic nonlinear analysis that based on loading increasement method and displacement increasement method. From this results, we discusses the effect of the joint rigidity and the half open angle $\theta$$_{0}$ on the buckling strength of single layer lattice domes ; (1) how the joint rigidity contributes to the reduction of buckling loads, (2) how the reduction can be interrelated to compressive strength curves in terms of the generalized slenderness for the member most relevant to the overall buckling of domes.s.
