  • In this study, emotional adjectives about the operating sound quality of the vehicle power seat are constructed, and the effectiveness of the emotional adjectives are verified by evaluating the operating sound quality. First, emotional adjectives were collected from the literature related to the automobile field and other sound qualities. A questionnaire was made using these adjectives. The questionnaire was designed to be able to select all adjectives that could express the operating noise of the power seat slide adjuster by applying the multiple- response method. Next, a subjective sound quality evaluation was conducted using the emotional adjectives. In the evaluation, we first recorded the operating noise for two power seats. Second, the subjective sound quality evaluation was performed on the recorded operating noise using a loudspeaker. Finally, through a statistical analysis on the sound quality evaluation results, the relationship between the semantic space and the preference score was verified, and the validity of the emotional adjectives was verified.

  • Today, the interior noise perceived by the occupants is an important factor in the design of automotive interior assemblies. Buzz, Squeak and Rattle Noises in a Seats are one of the major concerns mentioned above. In this study, the terms 'Buzz, squeak and rattle' were defined as the noise originating from structural vibrations in an assembly. And, the BSR noise of vehicle seat was investigated and the improvement of BSR noise level was confirmed though the structural treatment based on the structural analysis results from the modal and sound intensity of seat.

  • This paper addresses experimental results carried out to investigate the transmission of seat vibration to the head for Korean. Vertical seat vibration in the frequency range of 0.5-30 Hz was applied to a seated Korean male subject. To examine the intra-variable effects on transmissibility, five different postures and three different vibration excitation levels were considered. The applied acceleration and head accelerations of the seated subject were measured simultaneously by using a 6-axes bite-bar. Detailed experimental results of measured transmissibilities are illustrated for each posture and/or vibration excitation level. They are found to allow the identification of dynamic characteristics of Korean seated body for various real vibration environments. Furthermore, they are expected to be very useful in designing new seats for automotive and railway vehicles and in improving their vibration ride quality.

  • In recent automotive industries, fine blanking technology widely used in production of components with relatively thick gauges in brake systems, seat recliner, door locks, and auto transmission systems. Due to its advantages to obtain almost final product quality using fine blanking forming process without additional finish machining processes, consequently saving the production costs. In this paper we intended to develope the small sized module gear toothed dual seat recliner sector gear(0.5mm module) for car seats using fine blanking process which needed semi piercing with computer simulation and a lot of try and errors to achieve required accuracy and geometric quality. However through the some corrections of tool geometries with tryout test, we could get successful results.

  • Real time driver's respiration monitoring method for detecting driver's drowsiness is investigated. The sensor to obtain driver's respiration signal was a piezoelectric pressure sensor attached at the abdominal region of the seat belt. The resistance of the pressure sensor was changed according to the pressure applied to the seat belt due to the driver's respiration. Monitoring driver's respiration was carried out by driving on the virtual road in a driving simulator from Cheonan to Seoul and monitoring results were compared to the PELCLOS. Experiment results show that the driver's respiration signal can be used for detecting driver's drowsiness.

  • In this study, the effect of the automotive haptic-seat technology which can transmit the driving information by the vibro-stimulus from the seat was investigated to overcome previous system's limitation relied on the visual and audial method and to help handicap driving. A prototype haptic seat cover with 30 coin-type motors and driver module were developed for this sake. In an experiment of seat vibration stimulation being performed under virtual driving situation by targeting the elderly aged over 65 years old, average score of test subjects for total vibration recognition was 3.5/4 points and recognition rate of 87.5% was represented. In addition, a result that all the test subjects totally recognized overspeed warning signal of 4 times was represented. As a result of statistical analysis for vibration recognition score by each group depending on TMT score, a significant difference was not found and a result that tactile function of which vibration is recognized even by the aged whose visual, perceptional function is declined showed an equal ability was obtained.. In this study it was shown that the seat vibration stimulus could be used to transfer the old drivers' information while driving.

A prototype haptic seat covers with 30 coin-type motors and driver module were developed for this sake. A driving simulator on the 6-DOF motion-base was used for driving situation and we executed the seat vibro-stimulus test with 10 young participants who have normal tactile sense. The haptic recognition ratio by 30 locations was measured and analyzed in the result. The intensity of vibro-stimulus was adjusted by input voltage of motors (1.5V,2.5V,3.5V). All vibro-stimulus locations at 2.5V and 3.5V could be recognized by all participants and even in the lowest recognition ratio of 1.5V. The results showed that the seat vibration stimulus could be useful to transfer the drivers' information while driving.

  • This study presents the development of a machine vision inspection system(MVIS) purposely for car seat frames as an alternative for human inspection. The proposed MVIS is designed to meet the demands, features and specifications of car seat frame manufacturing companies in striving for increased throughput of better quality. This computer-based MVIS is designed to perform quality measures by detecting holes, nuts and welding spots on every car seat frame in real time. In this study, the NI Vision Builder software for Automatic Inspection was used as a solution in configuring the aimed quality measurements. The techniques for visual inspection are optimized through qualitative analysis and simulation of human tolerance on inspecting car seat frames. Furthermore, this study exemplifies the incorporation of the optimized vision inspection environment to the pre-inspection and post-inspection subsystems. The system built on this proposed MVIS for car seat frames has successfully found the possible detections.

  • Rotation of intake and exhaust valves are very closely related to the long term durability of automotive engines. If the valves do not rotate even at a rated engine speed, it causes the uneven wear of the valve seat and valve head contact area, which eventually shortens the engine life. A principle of valve rotation mechanism was presumed based on some findings from experiments, and computer programs were developed to simulate the valve rotation phenomena. In this study we investigated the valve rotation mechanism by using the computer simulation models.
