Fabrication of TiAl Alloys by Mechanical Milling and Spark Plasma Sintering (기계적 분쇄화 및 스파크 플라즈마 소결에 의한 TiAl 합금의 제조)

  • In the present study, newly developed spark plasma sintering(SPS) technique was introduced to refine the grain size of ${\gamma}$-based TiAl intermetallic compounds. Ti-46Al-1.5Mo and Ti-46Al-1.5Mo-0.2C(at%) prealloyed powders were produced by mechanical milling(MM) in high-energy attritor. The mechanically milled powders were characterized by XRD and SEM for the microstructural evolution as a function of milling time. And then, the MMed powders were sintered by both spark plasma sintering and hot pressing in vacuum (HP). After the sintering process, MM-SPSed specimens were heat-treated in a vacuum furnace (SPS-VHT) and in the SPS equipment(MM-SPS) for microstructural control. It was found from microstrutural observation that the microstructure consisting of equiaxed ${\gamma}$-TiAl with a few hundred nanometer in average size and ${\alpha}_2-Ti_3Al$ particles were formed after both sintering processes. It was also revealed from hardness test and three-point bending test that the effect of grain refinement on the hardness and bending strength is much higher than that of carbon addition. The fully lamellar microstructures, which is less than $80{\mu}m$ in average grain size was obtained by SPS-VHT process, and the fully lamellar microstructure which is less than $100{\mu}m$ in average grain size was obtained by MM-SPS for a relatively shorter heat-treatment time.

Densification Behavior of W-20wt.% Cu Composite Materials Fabricated by Mechanical Alloying Method (기계적합금화법에 의해 제조된 W-20wt.%Cu복합재의 치밀화 거동)

  • W-Cu composites utilize the high electrical conductivity of copper and arc erosion resistance of tungsten to provide properties better suited to electrical contact applications than either tungsten or copper alone. W-Cu composite materials were milled in an attritor with an impeller speed of 300rpm for various milling times. The milled powders were compacted at 300MPa into cylinders, 16m in diameter, and approximately 4m high. Sintering was performed in dry H$_2$at temperature ranging from 1200$^{\circ}C$ to 1400$^{\circ}C$. Samples were sectioned and were polished for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of microstructures. Homogeneous W-Cu composites were formed after 10 hours mechanical alloying and could be attained 99% density at 1330$^{\circ}C$. As mechanical alloying time increased, Fe-concentration was increased linearly. Intermetallic compound formation interupted the growth of W particles Increased hardness.

Electromagnetic Wave Absorption Properties of Fe-based Nanocrystalline P/M sheets with Al2O3 additive (Al2O3 첨가에 따른 Fe계 나노결정립 P/M시트의 전자파 흡수특성)

  • Electromagnetic wave absorbing materials have been developed to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) for electronic devices in recent years. In this study, Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu base amorphous strip was pulverized using a jet mill and an attritor and heat-treated to get flake-shaped nanocrystalline powders, and then the powders were mixed, cast and dried with dielectric $Al_{2}O_{3}$ powders and binders. As a result, the addition of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ powders improved the absorbing properties of the sheets noticeably compared with those of the sheets without dielectric materials. The sheet mixed with 2 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ powder showed the best electromagnetic wave absorption, which was caused by the increase of the permittivity and the electric resistance due to the dielectric materials finely dispersed on the Fe-based powder.

  • In this study, the grinding and wet cyclone process of the dust for the effective separation of high purity iron powder and iron oxide were investigated. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows: 1. By applying the wet cyclone technique for the iron powder(+200 mesh) produced from EC dust of the Kwangyang 2nd steel making factory, the iron powder of high content more than 99.76% of Fe was obtained with 47.66% yield at grinding time of 5 minutes by attritor. 2. The particle size distribution of the iron powder recovered from converter dust is quite simillar with the iron powder of sweden Hoganas Co.(W40.24, W40.29, W40.37, W40.37OX). 3. By using iron powder, copper ions are all adsorbed and removed in any concentration ranges of copper sulfate solution(Cu:100, 200, 300, 600 ppm).

Microstructural Characterization of $Al_3$(${Nb_{1-x}}{Zn_x}$) Alloy Prepared by Elemental Powder and Intermetallic Powder (원료분말과 금속간화합물 분말로 기계적 합금화한 $Al_3$(${Nb_{1-x}}{Zn_x}$) 합금의 미세구조특성)

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of zirconium addition to $Al_3$Nb intermetallic on the crystal structural modification and microstructural characterization of $Al_3$Nb intermetallic. Elemental Al, Nb, Zr powders and arc melted $Al_3$Nb and $Al_3$Zr intermetallic mixed powders were used as starting materials. MA was carried out in an attritor rotated with 300 rpm for 20 hours. The behavior of MA between two starting materials was some-what different in which the value of internal strain of the elemental powders was higher than that of the intermetallic powder. The intermetallic powder was much more disintegrated during the MA processing. In the case of the elemental powders, AlNb$_2$ phase were transformed to Al(Nb.Zr)$_2$ as a result of ternary addition of Zr element. With the successive heat treatment at 873K for 2 hours, the Al(Nb.Zr)$_2$ phase was transformed to more stable $Al_3$(Nb.Zr) phase. This transformation was clearly confirmed by the identification of X-ray peak position shift. On the other hand, in the carte of the intermetallic powder, there was no evidence of phase transformation to other ternary intermetallic compounds or amorphous phases, even in the case of additional heat treatment. However, nano-sized intermetallic with $Al_3$Nb and $Al_3$Zr were just well distributed instead of phase transformation.
