How to stabilize wood against shrinking and swelling in variable atmospheric moisture conditions is important to the wood-using industry and a challenge to research. Polyethylene glycol stabilize wood by bulking the fiber. PEG also serve as a chemical seasoning agent, suppress decay in high concentrations, and have slight effect on physical properties, gluing or finishing. The study designed to determine the effect of PEG-400 on the dimensional stabilization of local hardwoods for wood carvings that could supply a greatly expanding tourist trade and making curved furniture parts, lamp stands and other decorative objects, and possible gunstock. The species examined were 6 species, Seo-Namoo (Carpinus laxiflora), Cheungcheung-Namoo (Cornus controversa), Gorosae-Namoo (Acer mono), Karae-Namoo (Juglans mandshurica), Jolcham-Namoo (Quercusserrata) and Sanbud-Namoo (Prunus sargentii), used as block of 5cm thick radially to the grain, 7cm wide tangentially, and 70cm long parallel to the wood grain. All these test piecies were conditioned above the fiber saturation point before impregnation. The stabilization effects were determined for PEG-400 treated woods in a 50 percent solution for 20 days. The following conclusions were obtained. PEG retentions increased with treating time. It was more effective to treat at 60$^{\circ}C$ than at room temperature. In degree of PEG-400 impregnation on species, Cheungcheung-Namoo havinglow specific gravity had the highest retentions, 68.77% but the lowest, 56.33% was shown in Jolcham-Namoo with high specific gravity. Specific gravity of treated wood increased considerably with effectiveness of polymer loading. The increases in specific gravity were 5.36 to 13.16 percent. The highest was Jolcham-Namoo, the lowest Karae-Namoo. On the dimensional stability, a 40 percent of effectiveness of polymer loading was just as effective as 60 percent in reduction in water absorptivity (RWA), antishrinkage efficiency (ASE) and antiswelling efficiency (AE), and from over 60 percent they increased more rapidly. Also species response varied considerably. ASE was 30.12 to 69.97 percent tangentially and 27.86 to 56.37 percent radially, AE 34.06 to 73.76 percent tangentially and 30.11 to 70.12 percent radially, and RWA 42.31 to 65.32 percent. No differences in volume swelling among the 6 species were observed. Its values were ranged from 14.98 to 19.55 percent and also increased with PEG retentions. On the mechanical properties, the strengths very much decreased with PEG-400 loadings as shown in Figure 12; that were 11.41 to 22.90 percent in compression, 21.61 to 34.35 percent in bending and 22.83 to 36.83 percent in tensile strength. PEG retention in cell wall was less than 1 percent and the most of PEG were immersed in cell lumen. Except for Korae-Namoo, effectivenesses of polymer loading were as much high as 61.58 to 75.02 percent. This is believed to be due to the effect of PEG-400 on excellant dimensional stability of treated woods.

The variation in the wind speed with height above ground is called the wind shear profile. In the field of wind resource assessment, analysts typically use one of two mathematical relations to characterize the measured wind shear profile: the logarithmic profile (log law) and the power law profile (power law). The logarithmic law uses the surface roughness as a parameter, and the power law uses the power law exponent as a parameter. The shape of the wind shear profile typically depends on several factors, most notably the roughness of the surrounding terrain and the stability of the atmosphere. Since the atmospheric stability changes with season, time of day, and meteorological conditions, the surface roughness and the power law exponent also tends to change in time. For this study, Using the observed data from Met-mast, located in Pyeongdae, Handong in Jeju. we used the matlab and windograper to calculate roughness length and the law exponents. These calculations are similar to reference the data, but they have different ranges. In the ocean case, each reference data and calculated data was the same, but the crop area is higher than the earlier studies. In addition, the agricultural village is lower than the earlier studies.
Acid Rock Drainage(ARD) is the product formed by the atmospheric(i.e. by water, oxygen and carbon dioxide) oxidation of the relatively common iron-sulphur mineral pyrite($FeS_2$). ARD causes the acidification and heavy metal contamination of water and soil and the reduction of slope stability. In this paper the generation characteristics and the prediction of ARD of various cut slopes were studied. An attempt to classify the rocks into several groups according to their acid generation potentials was made. Acid Base Accounting(ABA) tests, commonly used as a screening tool in ARD predictions, were performed. Fourteen rock samples were classified into PAF(potentially acid forming) group and four rock samples into NAF(non-acid forming) group. The chemical analysis of water samples strongly suggested that ARD with high content of heavy metals and low pH could pollute the ground water and/or stream water.
Wind turbine noise is generally lower than that from other environmental noise sources such as road and railway noise. Nevertheless, some residents living more than 1km away from wind turbines have claimed that they suffer sleep disturbance due to wind turbine noise. Several researchers have maintained that residents near a wind farm may perceive large amplitude modulation of wind turbine noise at night, and this amplitude modulation is the main cause of the noise annoyance. However, to date only few studies exist on the prediction of the amplitude modulation of wind turbine noise. Thus, this study predicts amplitude modulated noise generated from a generic 2.5MW wind turbine. Semi-empirical noise models are employed to predict the modulation depth and the overall sound pressure level of the wind turbine noise. The result shows that the amplitude modulation is observed regardless of atmospheric stability, but the modulation depth in a stable atmosphere is 1~3dB higher than that in an unstable atmosphere near the plane of rotation where the blades move downward. Moreover, using the result of the noise prediction, this study estimates the maximum perceptible distance of the wind turbine noise cause by amplitude modulation. The result indicates that the wind turbine noise can be perceived at a distance of up to 1600m in the range of about 30~60 degree from the on axis in a extremely low background noise environment.

The considerations for remaining life of ACSR (Aluminum Stranded Conductors Steel Reinforced) in transmission lines have become gradually important to hold reliability and stability of power supply. The remaining life of ACSR exposed to the atmosphere for a long period may rely on deterioration caused by environmental indices such as atmospheric corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion and fatigue corrosion. One of reduction of useful life in overhead transmission lines built on the ridge of mountain is often caused by forest fires. This paper deals with investigation of strength deterioration performance of ASCR due to fires through several testing and analyzing data for tension load and extension of blazed ACSR. Test samples are ACSR 480[$\textrm{mm}^2$] conductors, which are artificially fired to regular durations. Mechanical properties such as tension load and extension for fired ACSR conductors are tested and estimation functions for mechanical performances corresponding to fire duration are determined. As a result, it can be verified that both tension load and extension of ACSR are reduced by increasing fire duration. Hence, it is obvious that ACSR due to forest fires may lead to mechanical deterioration.
Wind information is one of the major inputs for the prediction of urban air flow using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models. Therefore, the numerical characteristics of the wind data formed at their mother domains should be clarified to predict the urban air flow more precisely. In this study, the formation characteristics of the wind data in the Seoul region were used as the inlet wind information for a CFD based simulation and were analyzed using numerical weather prediction models for weather research and forecasting (WRF). Because air flow over the central part of the Korean peninsula is often controlled not only by synoptic scale westerly winds but also by the westerly sea breeze induced from the Yellow Sea, the westerly wind often dominates the entire Seoul region. Although simulations of wind speed and air temperature gave results that were slightly high and low, respectively, their temporal variation patterns agreed well with the observations. In the analysis of the vertical cross section, the variation of wind speed along the western boundary of Seoul is simpler in a large domain with the highest horizontal resolution as compared to a small domain with the same resolution. A strong convergence of the sea breeze due to precise topography leads to the simplification of the wind pattern. The same tendency was shown in the average vertical profiles of the wind speed. The difference in the simulated wind pattern of two different domains is greater during the night than in the daytime because of atmospheric stability and topographically induced mesoscale forcing.
In order to determine the prediction possibility of heavy rainfall, a variety of analyses was conducted by using three-dimensional data obtained from Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System (KLAPS) re-analysis data. Strong moisture convergence occurring around the time of the heavy rainfall is consistent with the results of previous studies on such continuous production. Heavy rainfall occurred in the cloud system with a thick convective clouds. The moisture convergence, temperature and potential temperature advection showed increase into the heavy rainfall occurrence area. The distribution of integrated liquid water content tended to decrease as rainfall increased and was characterized by accelerated convective instability along with increased buoyant energy. In addition, changes were noted in the various characteristics of instability indices such as K-index (KI), Showalter Stability Index (SSI), and lifted index (LI). The meteorological variables used in the analysis showed clear increases or decreases according to the changes in rainfall amount. These rapid changes as well as the meteorological variables changes are attributed to the surrounding and meteorological conditions. Thus, we verified that heavy rainfall can be predicted according to such increase, decrease, or changes. This study focused on quantitative values and change characteristics of diagnostic variables calculated by using numerical models rather than by focusing on synoptic analysis at the time of the heavy rainfall occurrence, thereby utilizing them as prognostic variables in the study of the predictability of heavy rainfall. These results can contribute to the identification of production and development mechanisms of heavy rainfall and can be used in applied research for prediction of such precipitation. In the analysis of various case studies of heavy rainfall in the future, our study result can be utilized to show the development of the prediction of severe weather.

We demonstrate a facile and robust layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method for the fabrication of nonvolatile resistive switching memory (NRSM) devices based on superparamagnetic nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the highly enhanced magnetic and resistive switching memory properties as well as the dense and homogeneous adsorption of nanoparticles, via nucleophilic substitution reaction (NSR) in nonpolar solvent. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MP) of about size 12 nm (or 7 nm) synthesized with oleic acid (OA) in nonpolar solvent could be converted into 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA)-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (BMPA-MP) by stabilizer exchange without change of solvent polarity. In addition, bromo groups of BMPA-MP could be connected with highly branched amine groups of poly (amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) in ethanol by NSR of between bromo and amine groups. Based on these results, nanocomposite multilayers using LbL assembly could be fabricated in nonpolar solvent by NSR of between BMPA-MP and PAMA without any additional phase transfer of MP for conventional LbL assembly. These resulting superparamagnetic multilayers displayed highly improved magnetic and resistive switching memory properties in comparison with those of multilayers based on water-dispersible MP. Furthermore, NRSM devices, which were fabricated by LbL assembly method under atmospheric conditions, exhibited the outstanding performances such as long-term stability, fast switching speed and high ON/OFF ratio comparable to that of conventional inorganic NRSM devices produced by vacuum deposition.
Application of biochar to soils is proposed as a significant, long-term, sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide in terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to reducing emissions and increasing the sequestration of carbon, production of biochar and its application to soils will contribute improve soil quality and crop productivity. Objectives were i) to evaluate biochar productivity from crop residues using a low-cost field scale mobile pyrolyzer and ii) to evaluate characteristics of feedstocks and biochars from locally collected crop residues. Pyrolysis experiments were performed in a reactor operated at $400-500^{\circ}C$ for 3-4 hours using biomass samples of post-harvest residues of corn (Zea mays L.), cotton (Gossypium spp.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Feedstocks differed, but average conversion to biochar was 23%. Carbon content of biomass feedstock and biochar samples were 445 g $kg^{-1}$ and 597 g $kg^{-1}$, respectively. Total carbon content of biochar samples was 34% higher than its feedstock samples. Significant increases were found in P, K, Ca, Mg, and micro-nutrients contents between feedstock and biochar samples. Biochar from corn stems and rice hulls can sequester by 60% and 49% of the initial carbon input into biochar respectively when biochar is incorporated into the soils. Pyrolysis conversion of corn and rice residues sequestered significant amounts of carbon as biochar which has further environmental and production benefits when applied to soils. Field experiment with crop residue biochar will be investigated the stability of biochars to show long-term carbon sequestration and environmental influences to the cropping systems.

This study was conducted to provide reference data for designing an alarm system that can help prevent the overturning of a container crane under wind load. Two methods, namely, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis and windtunnel test, were adopted in this investigation. To evaluate the effect of wind load on the stability of the crane, a 50-ton-class container crane that is widely used in container terminals was adopted as the analysis model and 19 values were considered as design parameters for wind direction. First, the wind-tunnel test for the reduced-scale container crane model was performed according to the wind direction by using an Eiffel type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. Next, the FSI analysis for the real-scale container crane was conducted using ANSYS and CFX. Then, the uplift force determined from the FSI analysis was compared with that determined from the wind-tunnel test. Finally, a formula to compensate for the difference between the results of the FSI analysis and the wind-tunnel test was proposed.
