Thermal stability of nitric acid solutions of reducing agents used in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing

  • The thermal stability of carbohydrazide, hydrazine nitrate, acetohydroxamic acid in nitric acid solutions has been studied at atmospheric pressure and above atmospheric pressure. The volumes of gaseous products of thermolysis and the maximum rate of gas evolution have been determined at atmospheric pressure. It has been shown that, despite the high rate of gas evolution and large volumes of evolved gases, the conditions for the development of autocatalytic oxidation are not created. Exothermic processes are observed in a closed vessel in the temperature range of 50-250 ℃. With an increase in the concentration of nitric acid, the temperatures of the onset of exothermic effects for all mixtures decrease, and the values of the total thermal effects of reactions increase, to the greatest extent for solutions with carbohydrazide.

  • Atmospheric concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured at the Chonbuk National University located in Jeonju, four times between June and November 2002, each time for five days. Twenty-four compounds including five alkyl PAHs and byphenyl were analyzed. Average total concentration of 24 PAHs was 85 $\pm$ 15 ng/$m^3$ and about 94% of PAHs existed in the gas phase. On an average, naphthalene accounted for about 30% of the total PAHs concentration. The gas/particle partitioning was not much varied during the measurement period. High molecular weight PAHs with five and six rings were primarily associated with fine particles less than 1 $\mu$m. Lower molecular weight PAHs were evenly distributed in fine and coarse particles so that their distribution was similar to that of TSP.

A Study on Gas-Liquid Contact in a Perforated Plate-Type $SO_2$ Absorber at Flooding Conditions

  • Gas-liquid contact tests above a perforated-plate were conducted with air and water at flooding gas-flow conditions in order to study two-phase flow characteristics in a limestone-gypsum SO2 absorber. Gas layers were in the form of air pockets and confined to the limited areas around each duct pipe, while the remaining tary area were in the wet condition. The liquid above the tray was always in the flooded and even fluidized conditions at gas flows over the range studied, although vigorous bubbly or churn-turbulent two-phase regime was only observed in the immediate vicinity of the gas hole exit at low gas loads. The froth zone was extremely active to provide intimate contact between gas and liquid so that the necessary mass transfer operation can take place, which is the primary purpose of high-performance SO2 absorbers. Howefer, the absorber $\Delta$P was 250mmH2O for the initial water level at 150mm, which is an important issue to be resolved for economical operation of the SO2 absorber. It was seen in the liquid level-and gas flow-transient tests that changes in the absorber liquid inventory were much more pronounced for intimate gas-liquid contact than changes in the gas flow. Based on the 4- and 8-duct pipe test results, grouping the duct pipes near the center of the test tray seemed to promote better recirulation of liquid from gas-liquid contact zone back to the reaction tank so that the absorbed SO2 can be neutralized.

가스온풍기용 가스버너의 설계 및 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Design and Development of Gas Burner for Gas Furnace)

  • The purpose of this study is to modify the kerosene furnace, which is forced flue type with 15000kcal capacity, to gas furnace satisfying for CITY gas, LNG gas and LPG gas. The gas furnace, a kind of gas appliance, is mainly used for heating houses by combusion of gas. This paper describes briefly the design technology for gas burner which is most important in replacing kerosene fuel with gas fuel. Especially, the design for gas nozzle is constructed by theoretical and experimental method. It is found that the experimental results of the modified gas burner are good agreement with the theoretical results for calorific value and combustion efficiency. The result of this study will contribute in the design skill and of gas burner and similar gas appliance, and the pursuit for reduction of fuel cost as well as atmospheric pollution.

  • An auxiliary device, called Post Cyclone (PoC). had been introduced and primarily examined in earlier works which proved the reduction of the emission of fine dust from the gas-solid cyclones without incurring significant increase of cost and pressure drop. It has been known that the PoC has some advantages over other secondary dust treatment devices such as (a) simple design, (b) low cost of manufacture, (c) minimum additional pressure drop, (d) high recoverbility of the product dust, and (e) simplicity of operation. Despite the potential advantage, however, lack of practical data confined its plausible application in wide areas. Thus, in this work, a few serial experiments were conducted in terms of a few operation conditions, and the particle trajectories throughout the cyclone set-up were visually analyzed by using a commercial computer simulation program (FLUENT).

  • A new type plasma reactor is proposed to decompose CF4 diluted with N2 gas in atmospheric pressure. The arc plasmas is surrounded with a waterwall which acts as a source of water vapor, the solvent of HF, resultant product after decomposition, and conveyer to take away fluorine compound from exhaust gas. Abatement more than 99% is achieved by small size plasmas such as 1 cm in diameter, 25cm in length and 3.4KW of DC discharge power in such gas as the mixture of 100 sccm of CF4 and 15 slm of N2. Reactors of this type are to be expanded to such a system as Nitrogen flow of 50 slm with 200 sccm of CF4 and 7-8 KW discharge power.

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Research Activity in Korea

  • Plasma is generated by electrical discharge. Most plasma generation has been carried out at low-pressure gas typically less than one millionth of atmospheric pressure. Plasmas are in general generated from impact ionization of neutral gas molecules by accelerated electrons. The energy gain of electrons accelerated in an electrical field is proportional to the mean free path. Electrons gain more energy at low-pressure gas and generate plasma easily by ionization of neutrals, because the mean free path is longer. For this reason conventional plasma generation is carried out at low pressures. However, many practical applications require plasmas at high-pressure. In order to avoid the requirement for vacuum pumps, researchers in Korea start to develop plasmas in high-pressure chambers where the pressure is 1 atmosphere or greater. Material processing, environmental protection/restoration and improved energy production efficiency using plasmas are only possible for inexpensive bulk plasmas. We thus generate plasmas by new methods and plan to set foundations for new plasma technologies for $21^{st}$ / century industries. This technological research will play a central role in material processing, environmental and energy production industries.

  • Recently, increasing usage of diesel vehicle, many countries try to reduce the pollutant materials by emission regulation standard. Particularly, in our country, the supplement ratio of diesel vehicle is high, and air pollution by particulate matter(PM) is very serious. So, in theoretical study wer analyzed the formation principle of gaseous emission and PM, the characteristics of CVS-75 mode. In experimental study, we tested exhaust gas reduction of emission and PM, the characteristics of CVS-75 mode. In experimental study, we tested exhaust gas reduction of disel oxidation catalyst(DOC) by CVS-75 mode in light duty diesel vehicle. In case of an automobiletest with the 2,956cc diesel engine which DOC was equipped, CVS-75 mode which is similar to driving conditions on the road was chosen as the restrictive mode of light duty diesel automobile in our country. According to the Pt, the reduction rate of exhaust emission was estimated with using 0.1% high sulfur fuel and 0.05% low sulfur fuel.
