The accurate prediction of the ship wave resistance is very important to design ships which operate satisfactorily in a wave environment. Thus, work should continue on development and validation of methods to compute ship wave patterns and wave resistance. Research efforts to improve the prediction of ship waves and wavemaking resistance are categorized in two major areas. First is the development of higher-order theories to take account of the nonlinear effect of the free surface condition and improved analytical treatment of the body boundary condition. Second is the development of direct numerical methods aimed at solving body and free-surface boundary conditions as accurately as possible. A new formulation of the slender body theory for a ship with constant speed is developed by Maruo. It is quite different from the existing slender ship theory by Vossers, Maruo and Tuck. It may be regarded as a substitute for the Neumann-Kelvin approximation. In present work, the method of asymptotic expansion of the Kelvin source is applied to obtain a new wave resistance formulation in fluid of finite depth. It takes a simple form than existing theory.
One of the most challenging safety precautions for workers in dynamic, radioactive environments is avoiding radiation sources and sustaining low exposure. This paper presents a sampling-based algorithm, DL-RRT*, for minimum dose walk-path re-planning in radioactive environments, expedient for occupational workers in nuclear facilities to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure. The method combines the principle of random tree star ($RRT^*$) and $D^*$ Lite, and uses the expansion strength of grid search strategy from $D^*$ Lite to quickly find a high-quality initial path to accelerate convergence rate in $RRT^*$. The algorithm inherits probabilistic completeness and asymptotic optimality from $RRT^*$ to refine the existing paths continually by sampling the search-graph obtained from the grid search process. It can not only be applied to continuous cost spaces, but also make full use of the last planning information to avoid global re-planning, so as to improve the efficiency of path planning in frequently changing environments. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method was verified by simulating radiation field under varying obstacles and radioactive environments, and the results were compared with $RRT^*$ algorithm output.
In this paper we investigate the motion response of a moored ship in the fluid region sheltered by inclined breakwaters. The matched asymptotic expansion technique is employed to analyze the wave fields scattered by the inclined breakwaters. Fluid domain is subdivided into the ocean, entrance and sheltered regions. Unknown coefficients contained in each region can be determined by matching at the intermediate zone between two neighboring regions. The wave field generated by the ship motion can be analyzed in terms of Green's function method. To obtain the velocity jump across the ship associated with the symmetric motion modes, the sheltered region is further divided into near field of the ship and the rest field. The image method is introduced to consider the effect of the pier near the ship. The integral equation for the velocity jump is derived by the flux matching between the inner region and the outer region of a moored ship. Throughout the numerical calculation it is found that the inclined angle width of entrance of breakwaters as well as the location of moored vessel play an important role in the motion response of a moored ship.
A passive sonar of warship is composed of several directional or omni-directional sensors. In order to model the acoustic signal received into a warship sonar, the wave propagation modeling is usually required from arbitrary noise source to all sensors equipped to the sonar. However, the full calculation for all sensors is time-consuming and the performance of sonar simulator deteriorates. In this study, we suggest an asymptotic method to estimate the sonar signal arrived to sensors adjacent to the reference sensor, where it is assumed that all information of eigenrays is known. This method is developed using Taylor series for the time delay of eigenray and similar to Fraunhofer and Fresnel approximation for sonar aperture. To validate the proposed method, some numerical experiments are performed for the passive sonar. The approximation when the second-order term is kept is vastly superior. In addition, the error criterion for each approximation is provided with a practical example.

The motion response of a ship moored in a rectangular harbor excited by long waves has been studied theoretically and experimentally. Within the framework of potential theory, matched asymptotic expansion techniques are exployed to analyze the problem. The fluid domain is divided into the ocean and the harbor regions for the analysis of wave response in a harbor without ship. The wave responses in both the ocean and the harbor sides are solved first independently in terms of Green's functions, which are the solutions of the Helmholtz equation satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. Slender body approximations are used to obtain the velocity jumps across the ship, which are associated with the symmetric motion modes of the ship. Unknowns contained in each solution are finally determined by matching at an intermediate zone between two neighboring regions. Theoretical results predict the ship motion qualitatively well. The main source of quantitative discrepancies is presumably due to real fluid effects such as separation at the harbor entrance and friction on harbor boundaries.

In this study, we investigate the accuracy of higher order derivatives in the moving least square (MLS) difference method. An interpolation function is constructed by employing a Taylor series expansion via MLS approximation. The function is then applied to the mixed variational theorem in which the displacement and stress resultants are treated as independent variables. The higher order derivatives are evaluated by solving simply supported beams and cantilevers. The results are compared with the analytical solutions in terms of the order of polynomials, support size of the weighting function, and number of nodes. The accuracy of the higher order derivatives improves with the employment of the mean value theorem, especially for very high-order derivatives (e.g., above fourth-order derivatives), which are important in a classical asymptotic analysis.

Diffraction patterns of electromagnetic fields for the incidence of E-polarized plane wave on both interfaces of an arbitrary-angle dielect wedge are obtained by sum of geometric optics term and the edge diffracted fields. The diffraction coefficients of the edge diffracted fields are evaluated by employing the physical optics approximation and then correcting its error with the multipole line source at the dielectric edge. For the wedge angle $120^{circ}$, the incident angle $60^{circ}$, the relative dielectric constant of the dielectric wedge, 2, 5, and 10, and the observation distance from the tip of the wedge, 5 and 10 wavelength, the diffraction coefficients and the diffraction patterns corresponding to geometric optics, physical optics, and the solution corrected by the multipole line source are plotted, respectively. While the corrected solutions presented in this paper are valid only in the far-field region, these asymptotic solutions show to satisfy the boundary condition on the dielectric interfaces.

In this study, the wave responses in a 'Y'shape water channel resonator for amplifying wave energy of a low density has been investigated. A water channel resonator is composed of the long channel and wave guider installed at the entrance. If the period of the incident waves coincides with the natural period of the fluid in a water channel resonator, resonance occurs and the internal fluid amplifies highly to a standing wave form. In order to analyze the wave response in a water channel resonator, we used the matched asymptotic expansion method and boundary element method. The both results were in good agreement with the results of the model test carried out in the two-dimensional wave tank of Jeju National University. Wave guider has an optimum length and installation angle according to the period of the incident wave, and especially effective in enhancing the amplification factor in a period range deviated from the resonance period. It is expected that the wave energy can be effectively extracted by placing the point absorber wave energy converter at the position of anti-node where the maximum wave height is formed by the internal fluid resonance.
