The skew-t distribution is an attractive family of asymmetrical heavy-tailed densities that includes the normal, skew-normal and Student's-t distributions as special cases. In this work, we propose an EM-type algorithm for computing the maximum likelihood estimates for skew-t linear regression models with censored response. In contrast with previous proposals, this algorithm uses analytical expressions at the E-step, as opposed to Monte Carlo simulations. These expressions rely on formulas for the mean and variance of a truncated skew-t distribution, and can be computed using the R library MomTrunc. The standard errors, the prediction of unobserved values of the response and the log-likelihood function are obtained as a by-product. The proposed methodology is illustrated through the analyses of simulated and a real data application on Letter-Name Fluency test in Peruvian students.

This paper proposes some diagnostics procedures for the skew-t linear regression model with censored response. The skew-t distribution is an attractive family of asymmetrical heavy-tailed densities that includes the normal, skew-normal and student's-t distributions as special cases. Inspired by the power and wide applicability of the EM-type algorithm, local and global influence analysis, based on the conditional expectation of the complete-data log-likelihood function are developed, following Zhu and Lee's approach. For the local influence analysis, four specific perturbation schemes are discussed. Two real data sets, from education and economics, which are right and left censoring, respectively, are analyzed in order to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology.

In this paper, the time evolution of undoped GaN epilayers on a low-temperature GaN buffer layer grown on c-plane sapphire at a low pressure of 300 Torr was studied via a two-step growth condition in a horizontal MOCVD reactor. As a function of the growth time at a high-temperature, the surface morphology, structural quality, and optical and electrical properties were investigated using atomic force microscopy, high-resolution x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and Hall effect measurement, respectively. The root-mean-square roughness showed a drastic decrease after a certain period of surface roughening probably due to the initial island growth. The surface morphology also showed the island coalescence and the subsequent suppression of three-dimensional island nucleation. The structural quality of the GaN epilayer was improved with increasing growth time considering the symmetrical (002) and asymmetrical (102) rocking curves. The variations of room-temperature photoluminescence, background carrier concentration, and Hall mobility were measured and discussed.

This paper presents a method for generating optimal fuzzy rules using a genetic algorithm. Fuzzy rules are generated from the training data in the first stage. In this stage, fuzzy c-Means clustering method and cluster validity are used to determine the structure and initial parameters of the fuzzy inference system. A cluster validity is used to determine the number of clusters, which can be the number of fuzzy rules. Once the structure is figured out in the first stage, parameters relating the fuzzy rules are optimized in the second stage. Weights and variance parameters are tuned using genetic algorithms. Variance parameters are also managed with left and right for asymmetrical Gaussian membership function. The method ensures convergence toward a global minimum by using genetic algorithms in weight and variance spaces.
This paper presents the switching angle and voltage for maximizing the torque or efficiency and minimizing torque ripple of an 8/6, SRM. The approximate analysis and computer simulation determine the switching angle and voltage by using SIMULINK$^\textregistered$. This is performed as a function of the speed and torque required by the load. From the results, new three facts can be known: First, the maximum torque depends on voltage and speed depends on switching angle. The others, the maximum efficiency and minimum torque ripple relay on switching angle. We control the switching angle and voltage of and asymmetrical inverter for the SRM with one-chip micro controller.

Successful completion of a visual task in a predetermined time is very crucial to many operations such as piloting an aircraft. Although existing ergonomic interface models often provide a function of vision tests, it determines only the visibility at any given location. To complement this problem in existing models, the isoresponse time region considering the factors related to visual tasks is presented. Using a multiple regression model, equal response time regions were obtained within which mean response time is expected to be the same and is asymmetrical in shape. Among the factors considered, expectancy significantly decreased response time, and when cued, the effects of field heterogeneity, target uncertainty, density, size contrast and peripheral position on search time were less significant than those in unexpected cases. Response time and error rate, gender and visual acuity were not significantly correlated, and response time and age was positively correlated. These results are expected to be directly applicable to designing various visual tasks in real-life situations.
This paper presents theoretical investigation on the cross correlation between torsional vibration ($u_{\theta}$) and translation vibration ($u_x$) of asymmetrical structure under white noise excitation. The formula reveals that the cross correlation coefficient (${\rho}$) is a function of uncoupled frequency ratio (${\Omega}={\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$), eccentricity, and damping ratio (${\xi}$). Simulations involving acceleration records from fifteen different earthquakes show correlation coefficients results similar to the theoretical correlation coefficients. The uncoupled frequency ratio is the dominating parameter to ${\rho}$; generally, ${\rho}$ is positive for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ > 1.0, negative for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ < 1.0, and close to zero for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ = 1.0. When the eccentricity or damping ratio increases, ${\rho}$ increases moderately for small ${\Omega}$ (< 1.0) only. The relation among $u_x$, $u_{\theta}$ and corner displacement are best presented by ${\rho}$; a simple way to hand-calculate the theoretical dynamic corner displacements from $u_x$, $u_{\theta}$ and ${\rho}$ is proposed as an alternative to dynamic analysis.

The N-docosyl N'-methyl viologen-$(TCNQ)_2$, (DMVT) was synthesized. We investigated the ${\pi}-A$ isotherm of DMVT to find the optimal deposition condition. Temperature-dependent current-voltage characteristics of the DMVT LB films shows that there is an increase in conductivity at 330K or so. The in-plane electrical conductivity at room temperature is in the range of $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-6}S/cm$. From the plot of logarithmic conductivity as a function of reciprocal temperature, two types of activation energies, 0.04eV and 0.73eV, were obtained depending on the temperature range. The Ohmic behaviour was observed below 0.6V and the Schottky effect was confirmed at $2.5{\sim}6V$, when the I-V characteristics was measured with Al/LB film/Al structure. I-V measurement for Al/LB film/ITO structure showed the asymmetrical I-V relationship, which resulted from the rectification property.
In this paper, a four-phase 8/6-pole 4-kW SR motor drive model is presented. Based on experimental data, the model allows an accurate simulation of a drive in dynamic operation. Simulations are performed and a laboratory type set-up is built based on a TI TMS320F2812 platform to experimentally verify the theoretical results obtained for a SR motor. To reduce acoustic noise and to correct the power factor of this drive, a two-stage power converter is proposed that uses a current source rectifier (CSR) as the input stage for the asymmetrical converter of the studied SRM. Employing the space-vector modulation (SVM) method in matrix converters, the CSR switching allows the dc link's capacitors to be eliminated and the power factor of the SRM drive to be improved. As the electrical motive force (emf) is directly proportional to the rotor speed, the input voltage to the machine can be programmed to be a function of the speed with the modulation index of the CSR, leading to a reduction in the acoustic noise of the SRM drive. Simulation of the whole SRM drive system is performed using MATLAB-Simulink. The results fully comply with the required conditions such as power factor correction with an improvement in the THD.
For high power high step-down dc-dc conversion applications, conventional three-level dc-dc converters are subject to extreme duty cycles or increased volume and cost due to the use of transformers. In this paper, a transformerless three-level dc-dc buck converter with a high step-down conversion ratio is proposed. The converter comprises two asymmetrical half bridges, which are of the neutral point clamped structures. Therefore, the output pulse voltage of the converter can be obtained in terms of the voltage difference between the two half bridges. In order to realize harmonious switching of the converter, a modulation strategy with capacitor voltages self balance is presented. According to the deduced output dc voltage function, transformerless operation without extreme duty cycles can be implemented. Experimental results from a 1kW prototype verify the validity of the proposed converter. It is suitable for ship electric power distribution systems.
