Many kinds of liquid spray products are used in livelihood activities these days. Spray products can be distinguished by the target to be sprayed (like into the air or on human skin (body)). Because human can be exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted from spray products, some considerations on safety or hazard of spray products should be needed. In this study, emission characteristics of VOCs were investigated against 10 types of liquid spray products (6 skin spray and 4 air spray products). The concentrations of benzene and toluene were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) equipped with a thermal desorber (TD). Their average concentrations from 6 skin spray products exhibited$ 5.64{\pm}1.95$ ($mean{\pm}S.D$) and $8.52{\pm}2.89$ ppb(w), respectively. In contrast, those of 4 air spray samples had $7.30{\pm}1.31$ and $7.19{\pm}1.78$ ppb(w), respectively. If liquid contents in spray samples are completely vaporized in one cubic meter (1 m3) after spraying for 10 seconds, their mean concentrations of skin spray products are $31.7{\pm}8.80$ (benzene) and $50.5{\pm}17.1{\mu}g/Sm^3$ (toluene). In contrast, those of air spray products are $24.0{\pm}4.30$ (benzene) and $23.6{\pm}5.83{\mu}g/Sm^3$ (toluene). The estimated concentration levels of benzene from two types of products (31.7 and $24.0{\mu}/Sm^3$) exceeded the Korean atmospheric environmental guideline ($5{\mu}g/Sm^3$). The results of this study thus suggest that some measures should be made to reduce or suppress the contents of VOC in spray products.

This study aimed to improve the method for detecting eight secondary aliphatic amines (SAAs), so as to measure their concentrations in fresh water and tap water samples. NaOH (8 mL, 10 M) and benzenesulfonyl chloride (2 mL) were added to a water sample (200 mL), and the mixture was stirred at $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. An additional NaOH solution (10 mL) was added and the stirring was continued for another 30 min. The pH of the cooled mixture was adjusted to 5.5-6.0 by adding HCl (35 %), and the SAAs were extracted using dichloromethane (50 mL). This extraction was repeated once. The extract was then washed with $NaHCO_3$ (15 mL, 0.05 M) and dried over $Na_2SO_4$ (4 g). The extract was finally concentrated to 0.1 mL, of which $1{\mu}L$ was analyzed for SAAs by GC-MS. The linearity of the spike calibration curves was high ($r^2=0.9969-0.9996$). The detection limits of the method ranged from 0.01 to $0.20{\mu}g/L$, and its repeatability and reproducibility (expressed as relative standard deviation) were both less than 10 % (6.6-9.4 %). Its accuracy (measured in percentage error) ranged between 2.4 % and 6.1 %. The established method was applied to the analysis of five surface water and 82 tap water samples. Dimethylamine was the only SAA detected in all the water samples, and its average concentration was $0.79{\mu}g/L$ (range: $0.20-2.54{\mu}g/L$). Therefore, this study improved the analytical method for SAAs in surface water and tap water, and the regional and seasonal concentration distributions were obtained.

Purpose : Abdominal obesity is encountered as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, the anthropometric cut-off value to estimate the cardiovascular risk, has not been suggested. This study was designed to find the relationship between the abdominal fat and various parameters of obesity to find the cardiovascular risk factors related to abdominal obesity and to establish practical methods to measure them. Methods : Twenty seven obese Korean adolescents of moderate to severe degree and 22 healthy adolescents were enrolled. The body mass index(BMI), arm circumference and skinfold thickness were measured. Furthermore, blood lipid, sugar, insulin and four different cytokines' levels were checked and the distribution of body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. The subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat thickness by abdominal ultrasonography(US) and the total and intra-abdominal fat area by abdominal computerized tomography(CT) were measured in the obese group. Results : The most accurate method to measure abdominal fat in children is abdominal CT and the fat mass measured by bioelectrical impedance was strongly correlated with it(r=0.954). It was also correlated with arm circumference, fat thickness measured by abdominal US, BMI, aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and triglyceride level. Conclusion : Abdominal CT is the most accurate method to measure intra-abdominal fat, and it can be replaced by abdominal US for cost effectiveness. The screening methods that can be used at school or in outpatient basis include bioelectrical impedance, waist/hip ratio, and arm circumference. The cardiovascular risk factors include leptin, triglyceride and insulin level.
The composition of rumen volatile fatty acids(VFA) and the blood chemistry were investigated in 5 clinically health dairy cows(Group I) reared on dairy farms and in 5 cows with post-parturition(POP) primary ketosis(Group II). The determinations were performed on days 5 to 7 pre-parturition(PRP), immediately POP, and on days 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 POP. In both groups, the total VFA levels gradually increased starting from day 5 POP, but the levels were lower in Group II than in Group I. With regard to POP. changes in the composition of VFA, Group II occasionally showed lower levels of acetic acid and caproic acid than did Group I. Blood glucose levels decreased POP in both groups. In contrast, blood levels of ketone bodies and 3-hydroxybutyric acid were increased POP, but there was no statistically by significant difference between the groups. The aspartate aminotransferase level was transiently increased immediately POP in both groups, and the increase was more marked in Group II than in Group I. Both groups showed a tendency for total cholesterol, free cholesterol, ester cholesterol, phospholipid, and total bile acid to be increased POP, but there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. Clinically healthy dairy cows also showed POP changes in the composition of VFA and blood similar to those in dairy cows with ketosis, suggesting that even apparently healthy cows are at risk of subclinical ketosis POP.
In this study, crystal structures and magnetic properties of as-ast, annealed and rapidly solidified Mn-A1-M( M=Cu, Fe) alloys have been investigated. In $Mn_{0.56}Al_{0.44}$ alloys, the largest fraction of $\tau$ phase and values of magnetic properties was obtained in Mnl, i6Alo or alloy. And this alloy was used as the basic composition. In $Mn_{0.56-X}M_{X}Al_{0.44}$ alloys, when annealed, $\tau$- and $\beta$-Mn phase appeared at x< 0.08, $\tau$- and $\kappa$ phase at 0.10 $\leq x \leq$ 0.12 and $\kappa$- phase only at 0.15 $\leq x \leq$0.20 . When rapidly solidified, specimens showed similar phases as when annealed except that $\varepsilon$ phase appeared at x=0.04. In Mnu FexAlo 44 alloys, asyast specimens showed $\tau$-, $\beta$-Mn and $\gamma_2$- phase at x<0.08 and K and $\beta$-Mn phase at x>0.10. When rapidly solidified, Mn-Fe-Al specimens showed $\varepsilon$-, $\gamma_2$- and small amount of $\tau$- and $\kappa$ phase at x<0.08 and $\kappa$- phase only at 0.$\leq x \leq$0.20. All the alloys investigated were ferromagnetic. The Curie temperature of annealed specimens and rapidly solidified of Mno 5sAlu 44 alloy were -650K and -644K. Spontaneous magnetization( UII of annealed and rapidly solidified specimens were 40-45 (emu/g) and 50-52(emu/g), respectively. Remanent (M,) to saturation magnetization( Ms) ratio was -0.7. M, of rapidly solidified specimen was about 48(emu/g). Magnetic properties of $Mn_{0.56}Al_{0.44}$ alloys were found to be determined by the relative fraction of ferromagnetic r- and K- phase. When M= Cu and x=0.15, maximum as($\sigma_{0.0}$) was obtained by about 64.3 emu/g), and when M=Fe and x=0.15, 66.4( emu/g). The Curie temperature decreased as x increased.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of long-term administration of Saengshik on growth parameters of growing rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on AIN-93G basal diets for 12 weeks and assigned to the following groups: rats administrated orally with Saengshik at the dose of 1g/kg/day (1xJS ), 2g/kg/day (2xJS), 4g/kg/day (4xJS) and distilled water (Control). Rats were sacrificed at 4, 8, 12 weeks after oral administration. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral contents (BMC) were measured by PIXImus densitometry and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentration were determined by using EIA method. Body weight and food intake did not show significant changes within groups for 12 weeks. Physical longitudinal growth indexes, body length and femur length were significantly increased in Saengshik-administered groups at 12 weeks, in which BMD and BMC also significantly increased. Also, in blood IGF-1 level, Saengshik-administered groups were remarkedly higher than control group at 4 week (p<0.001), in which significantly higher at 8 week and 12 week. These results suggest a close relation between administration of Saengshik and increment of longitudingal bone growth. Therefore, as the result of this study, it could be expected that the administration of Saengshik for 12 weeks is helpful to the increase of longitudinal growth and growth factors in rats. Furthermore, we propose that the consumption of Saengshik as dietary supplementation may promote to increase in longitudinal bone growth in growing children.
Purpose: Liver function test abnormalities have been reported frequently in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In adults, it is known that liver complications decrease with the use of cyclic parenteral nutrition (CPN), especially if the shift to cycling was not too late. However, there are few studies about the effects of cycling on liver injury in children beyond the neonatal period. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the early use of CPN on total parenteral nutrition induced hepatic dysfunction. Methods: Twelve sets of CPN in 11 children (2 months to 17 years) were included in this study. Data on underlying diseases, age, length of time on TPN, macronutrient intake, complications, and biochemical parameters were collected from clinical records. All children had received CPN in the early period of persistent transaminase elevation or cholestasis complicated by previous continuous PN. The duration of infusion off-time in CPN was 2 hours in patients less than 3 months of age and 4 hours in the older children. Results: All 12 cases showed elevated aminotransferase and 5 of them also showed cholestasis. Serum total bilirubin concentration was normalized in all 5 cases with median periods of 8 days (p<0.05) after initiation of CPN. ALT either decreased significantly or was normalized in all cases with median periods of 30 days (p<0.05) on CPN. The CPN was well tolerated without significant complication except for one case of hyperglycemia. Conclusion: The early use of cyclic parenteral nutrition had a beneficial effect in improving hepatic dysfunction complicated by TPN in children.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of treatment of living-related liver transplantation (LRLT) with the parental heterozygote carrier graft in children with Wilson disease. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 7 children with Wilson disease who had received liver transplantation from 1994 to 2002 at Asan Medical Center. All the donors were parental. Liver functions, Kayser-Fleischer ring, and other factors regarding to copper metabolism were analyzed. Results: Of the 7 children, 5 had fulminant hepatitis and 2 had decompensated liver cirrhosis irresponsive to medical therapy. All donors being parental, all grafts came to be heterozygote carrier grafts. Survival rate was 100% in those 7 children, 87% in all children with liver transplantation in the same period, and 84% in children with non-metabolic liver disease. After liver transplantation, all 7 children could stop low copper diet and penicillamine therapy and their AST, total bilirubin and prothrombin time were recovered to normal. After liver transplantation, ceruloplasmin and serum copper levels were also recovered to normal. A marked reduction in 24 hr-urinary copper excretion was observed in all recipients after transplantation. During follow-up, Kayser-Fleischer rings resolved completely after LRLT in 5 children and partially in 1 child. Conclusion: We concluded that living-related liver tranplantation in children with Wilson disease with parental heterozygote carrier graft is an effective treatment modality.

This study was established to investigate the effect of germanium-fortified yeasts on the serum lipid composition and immune system of human body. All 50 subjects with the age range of $50{\sim}75$ were entered in this clinical trial for 6 months. The effects were determined by the proliferative responses of immune-mediated cells, T-cell, B-cell and NK-cell during daily supplementation with/without germanium-fortified yeast. The results of hematology and blood chemistry didn't show any significant differences during administration periods. Serum lipid compositions also didn't show any significant differences during administration periods except triglyceride (TG) and VLDL-cholesterol. TG and VLDL-cholesterol levels were increased significantly by the consumption of germanium-fortified yeast (p<0.05). Immune mediated T-celt and NK-cell didn't increased in both control and test group supplemented with germanium fortified yeast, while B-cell increased in the germanium fortified yeast group after 8 week (p<0.05). Also $TNF-{\alpha}$ increased in the group of germanium fortified yeast after 8 week (p<0.05) but not in the control group. From the above results, germanium fortified yeast is expected to be useful on the improvement of the cellular immune response and protection of organs from various chronic diseases.
The determination and confirmation of dutasteride in human serum was performed by a liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS/MS). Beclomethasone as an internal standard (I.S.) was added to the serum and the mixed sample was pretreated by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). The mass transitions of dutasteride and I.S. monitored in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) were m/z 529.6${\rightarrow}$461.5 and m/z 409.3${\rightarrow}$391.2, respectively, and the retention times were 6.45 and 5.46 min, respectively. The calibration curve was linear in the concentration range of 0.5~30.0 ng/mL ($R^2$= 0.9999) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was found to be 0.5 ng/mL. The recovery of dutasteride was shown to be 66~72%. The intra-day assay precision and accuracy were in the range 3.5~5.5% and 85.7~89.9%, respectively, and the interday assay precision and accuracy were in the range 4.2~5.8% and 90.8~95.8%, respectively.
