To investigate the spray behavior and atomization characteristics using an air-assist injector, spray visualization and PDPA measurements were carried out under the various assisted air pressures and the fixed fuel pressure. The air assist pintle type injector employed in this study is consisted of the air assist adaptor and an injector housing using the gasoline fuel and air as the working fluids. As results, increasing pressure of assisted air, the growth of spray tip penetration is gradually reduced at the end of spray and spray angle is steadily increased at the main spray region except from the early spray. For the air assist pressure of 25㎪ in a spray downstream, it is doncluded that droplet size distribution shows the peak of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and most of the droplet sizes are less than 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Also, the air-assist injector extremely improves fuel atomization in order to produce much finer droplets, it shows that approximately, in this case, 50% decreade of SMD than without air assit.

In this paper, we proposed a design of upper-limb rehabilitation device with power-assist function for stroke survivals. The designed upper-limb rehabilitation device has three degrees of freedom; it is possible to perform flexion and extension motions of wrist, index finger and the other fingers except the thumb independently. The power-assist for wrist motion is performed by a pneumatic double-acting cylinder, but the fingers are actuated by electrical linear actuators to assist motions. A prototype upper-limb rehabilitation device and its controller were implemented. The position controller showed 0.8 mm errors in the steady-state. Experimental results showed that the proposed upper-limb rehabilitation device with power-assist function is feasible.
From April 1989 to December 1993, total 39 patients who were unable to be weaned off CPB or expected fatal immediate postoperiatively, were treated with ventricular assist device [VAD] or extracorporeal membrane oxygenator[ECMO] at the Royal Children`s Hospital, Melbourne. Ages ranged from 3 day to 19.4 year old and body weights from 2.0Kg to 70Kg. Twenty-seven[69.2%] of 39 patients were weaned to be decannulated successfully and sixteen[41.0%] survived to hospital discharge and late survival rate was twelve[30.8%] of 39 patients. The total follow-up period was 4 to 56 months [32.92$\pm$20.77months] and most of the late survivals showed good myocardial recovery state. From the viewpoint of the assist modality, 29 patients were treated with VAD and among them, 23 were weaned from assist successfully, but among the 8 ECMO patients, only 3 could be weaned, and both modalities were performed to the 2 patients with one weaned. The total duration of assist was from 8 to 428 hours and there was a significant difference between hospital discharged group and hospital death group, which were 83.13$\pm$31.29 hours vs 147.52$\pm$112.03 hours[P=0.032]. Conclusively, at the critical postcardiotomy situation of the paediatrtic patients including various congenital complex disease and procedures, we can choose this VAD or ECMO treatment strategy as the reasonable life saving way except transplantation.
Effect of incident ion beam energy on microstructure and adhesion behavior of TiN thin films were studied. Without ion beam assist, TiN film showed (111) growth mode which was thought to have the lowest deformation energy. As the ion beam assist energy increased, TiN film growth mode was changed from (111) to (200) mode. On the Si(100) substrate the critical incident energy for growth mode change was 100 eV/atom, however the critical assist energy was 121 eV/atom on the STD61 substrate. Grain size of TiN films increased with the assist ion beam energy. Finally, adhesion strength of TiN films bombarded above the critical ion assist energy showed 4~5 times higher values than that with lower bombard ion energy.

Many walking stands, and assisting tools have been developed for the people with low-limb disability to prevent diseases from bedridden state and to help them walk again. But many of those equipments require user to have some physical strength or balancing ability. In our last research, we developed walking assist system for the people with lower-limb disability. With the system, user can be assisted by actuators, and do not have to worry about falling down. The system adapted the unique closed links structure with four servomotors, three PICs as controller, and four limit switches as HMI (human man interface). We confirmed the adaptability of the system by the experiment. In this research, Muscle Stiffness Sensor was tested as the advanced HMI for walking assist system, and confirmed the adaptability by the experiment. As Muscle Stiffness Sensor can attain the muscle activity, user can interface with any device he want to control. Experimental result with Muscle Stiffness sonsor showed that user could easily control the walking assist system as his will, just by changing his muscle strength.

The need for human body posture robots has led researchers to develop dexterous design of exoskeleton robots. Quantitative techniques to assess human motor function and generate commands for robots were required to be developed. In this paper, we present a passivity based adaptive control algorithm for upper limb assist exoskeleton. The proposed algorithm can adapt to different subject parameters and provide efficient response against the biomechanical variations caused by subject variations. Furthermore, we have employed the Particle Swarm Optimization technique to tune the controller gains. Efficacy of the proposed algorithm method is experimentally demonstrated using a seven degree of freedom upper limb assist exoskeleton robot. The proposed algorithm was found to estimate the desired motion and assist accordingly. This algorithm in conjunction with an upper limb assist exoskeleton robot may be very useful for elderly people to perform daily tasks.

The purpose of this study is to develop the algorithm which can control muscle power assist robot especially for elderly. Recently, wearable robots for power assistance are developed by many researchers, and its application fields are also variable such as for medical or military equipment. However, there are many technical barriers to develop the wearable robot. This study suggest a control method improving performance of a wearable robot system by using a EMG signal of major muscles and a force sensor signal as command signal of system. The result of the robot Prototype efficiency experiment, the case of Maximum Isometric motion it suggest 100% power of muscle, the man need only 66% of MVIC(Maximum Voluntary Isometric Contraction) to lift 5kg dumbbell without robot assist. However the man needs only 52% of MVIC to lift 5kg dumbbell with robot assist. Therefore 20% muscle power increased with robot assist. Also, we designed light weight robot mechanism that extract the command signal verified and drive the wanted motions.
This paper describes the design and manufacture of a ankle two-axis force sensor of a walking assist robot for hemiplegic leg patient. The walking assist robot for the hemiplegic leg patient can safely control the robot by detecting whether the foot wearing the walking assist robot is in contact with the obstacle or not. To do so, a two-axis force sensor should be attached to the robot's ankle. The sensor is used to measure the force of a patient's ankle lower part. The two-axis force sensor is composed of a Fx force sensor, a Fy force sensor and a pulley, and they detect the x and y direction forces, respectively. The two-axis force sensor was designed using by FEM(Finite Element Method), and manufactured using by strain-gages. The characteristics experiment of the two-axis force sensor was carried out respectively. The test results indicated that the interference error of the two-axis force sensor was less than 1.2%, the repeatability error and the non-linearity of the two-axis force sensor was less than 0.04% respectively. Therefore, the fabricated two-axis force sensor can be used to measure the force of ankle lower part in the walking assist robot.
The purpose of this paper was to find out the proper equation to predict the gas transfer rate for designing intravenous artificial lung assist device. The prepared hollow fiber modules were examined under various experimental conditions through experimental modeling before inserted the artificial lung assist d $\varepsilon$ vice into as venous. As a result, we can estimate the gas transfer as a function of the packing density. The gas transfer obtained from the experiment was similar to that from the equation, confirming the usefulness equation. Therefore, we can conclude the gas transfer of the intravenous artificial lung assist device as a function of the packing density, and this functions are very useful for predicting the gas transfer of the intravenous artificial lung assist device.
A novel electro-mechanical implantable ventricular assist system is developed as a bridge to transplantation or recovery for patients with end-stage heart failure. The developed system is composed of an implanted blood pump, an external monitoring system which stores data, and a wearable system including a portable external driver and a portable power supply system. The blood pump is designed to be implanted into the left upper abdominal space and provides blood flow from the left ventricular apex to the aorta. The pulsatile blood flow is generated by a double cylindrical cam. There was mo excessive heat emission from the blood pump into the temperature-controlled chamber in the heat test and no stagnated flow within the blood sac by the observation in the flow visualization test. Animal experiments were performed using sheep and calves. The maximum assist flow rate reached 7.85L/min in the animal experiment. The evaluation results showed that the developed system was feasible for the implantable ventricular assist system. The long-term in vitro durability test and mid-term in vivo experiments are in progress and mow the modified next model is under development.
