  • As the incidence and mortality of serious disasters in the construction industry are the highest, various efforts are being made in Korea to reduce them. Among them, risk assessment is used as data for disaster reduction measures and evaluation of risk factors at the construction stage. However, the existing risk assessment involves the subjectivity of the performer and is vulnerable to the domestic construction site. This study established a DB classification system for risk assessment with the aim of early identification and pre-removal of risks by quantitatively deriving risk factors using BIM in the risk assessment field and presents a methodology for risk assessment using BIM. Through this, prior removal of risks increases the safety of construction workers and reduces additional costs in the field of safety management. In addition, since it can be applied to new construction methods, it improves the understanding of project participants and becomes a tool for communication. This study proposes a framework for deriving quantitative risks based on BIM, and will be used as a base technology in the field of risk assessment using BIM in the future.

  • This study has proposed the development procedure of 'railway accident risk assessment model' by as a common approach. The risk assessment procedure is following the requirements of the common safety methods (CSM) suggested in EU and was developed based on the accident scenarios. Various hazardous events, which have the potential to lead directly to casualties, were defined. Then, for each hazardous event, the railway accident appearance scenarios and railway accident progress scenarios were developed. The developed procedure will provide a generic model of the safety risk on the Korea railway.

  • Although there have been many efforts to reduce accidents on construction sites, such accidents continue to occur. New technologies have recently been developed to improve safety and their performance needs to be evaluated to determine their suitability prior to the application. The assessment for safety performance mainly is conducted depending on qualitative and subjective judgment of supervisors. However, there are rarely proper approaches to assess such qualitative measures. Therefore, we propose a fuzzy-based approach to assessing the performance of a new technology. The assessment of a new technology, called a mobile detector (MD), was carried out as a case study. The output is compared with those by a numerical simulation. As a result, the fuzzy-based performance assessment is shown to be appropriate for this evaluation.

  • The purpose of RVSM is to reduce vertical separation minima for aircrafts which operate between FL290- FL410 inclusive in regional airspace, and to increase airspace capacity by providing additional flight levels. In order to introduce RVSM, it is necessary to estimate quantitatively airborne collision risk due to the reduction in vertical separation minimum. In this study, the basic concept of RVSM safety assessment and Reich collision risk model are introduced and mid-air collision risk in Incheon FIR is estimated based on ICAO RVSM safety assessment technique and Reich Model.

  • The purpose of this article is to evaluate the radiation safety of CANDU spent fuel disposal system by using MCNPX which was revised in order to improve disposal efficiency. This research analyzed every system components's configuration, dimension and material. Geometric modeling and dose assessment for each system components showed that dose results for inner components had high values, but final disposal system had enough margin for radiation safety.

  • Food borne pathogens are a growing concern for human health and food safety throughout the world. Milk and dairy products are commonly associated with spoilage or contamination from a wide variety of physical, microbial, and chemical hazardous. Microbiological risk analysis consists of three components: risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication, and overall objective of this process is ultimately public health protection. The microbiological risk assessment is useful tool to evaluate food safety as it is based on a scientific approach. In addition risk assessment process includes quantitative estimation of the probability of occurrence of microbial hazards to evaluate more accurate human exposure. The aim of this study is to review the microbiological risk assessment on the prevalence of bacterial foodborne pathogens in milk and dairy products.

  • BACKGROUND: Increase of heavy metals in agricultural ecosystem has become a social issue nationwide as it is related to public health. This review was performed to find out more systematic and integrated future researches on heavy metals using up to date articles published in the Korean journals related to agricultural environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Researches on heavy metals in agricultural soils and plant uptake were categorized by the establishment of criteria, analytical methods, monitoring, management of source, characteristics and behavior in soil, plant uptake, bioavailability affecting physico -chemical properties in soil, risk assessment and soil remediation. In the early 1990s, the monitoring for heavy metals in soil has been widely performed. Accumulation of heavy metals in contaminated soil and availability to plants has also attracted interests to study the soil remediation using various physico-chemical methods. The phytoavailability and phytotoxicity of heavy metals have been mainly studied to assess the safety of agro-products using risk assessment techniques in the 2000s. CONCLUSION: Future direction of research on heavy metal in agricultural environment must be carried out by ensuring food safety and sustainability. A steady survey and proper management for polluted regions should be continued. Law and regulation must be modified systematically. Furthermore, studies should expand on mitigation of heavy metal uptake by crops and remediation of polluted fields.

  • Most microorganisms have been used for foods for such a long period of time with no question posed for their safety. However, the progress of food processing technology has activated international food trades, and the consumers and authorities of import countries have come to question the safety of microorganisms used in foods. At present, the most widely known safety standards are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) status by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). GRAS status is not for the safety of microorganisms themselves but for the permissibility of strains or cultures in specific food uses. QPS provides a qualified generic approval to a defined taxonomic unit. The increase of commercialized traditional fermented foods in Korea has spurred the starter development for traditional food fermentations. However, starter development in Korea has been carried out based on the technological properties of microorganisms with no research on developing a standardized tool for safety assessment. In the globalization of traditional Korean fermented foods, technological properties as well as safety of future starters should be guaranteed, and establishment of the safety assessment regulation for microorganisms used for foods is necessary.
