  • Change of carabid beelte (Coleoptera, Carabidae) diversity and population structures in Woopo Wetlands (Changneung-Gun, Gyeungsangnam-Do, S. Korea) were investigated after flooding events. During the investigation period, 11 species belonging to five genera were identified. Dolichus halensis halensis(Schaller), Chlaenius (Ch.) pallipes Gebler, Ch. (Ilaenchus) naeviger Morawitz, and Pheropsophus (Stenaptinus) jessoensis Morawitz were the predominant species in Woopo Wetlands. Floods occurred twice, August and September in 2004. After the flooding events, species diversity decreased and species assemblage structures changed dramatically. Changes of the diversity and species assemblage structures were more evident in August then in September, because water level was much higher and inundation period was longer than September. A non-linear patterning algorithm of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was applied to discover the relationship between flooding events and carabid beetles community dynamics. Although abundance of the majority species decreased after the flooding events, that of the predominant species increased. Further detailed studies on species distribution and emigration patterns will likely bring a new insight in understanding of the adaptation mechanism of carabid beetles in wetlands.

  • The ecological distribution of endomycorrhizas in evergreen woody species native to the evergreen forest ecosystem of Tadohae-haesang National Park in southern Korea in February, 1989 was studied. The abundance and diversity of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi were also determined. The spore densities ranged from 14 to 326 per 100 g of soil. Most of the spores of mycorrhizal fungi collected from 25 soil samples belonged to the genera Glomus and Gigaspora. The frequency and number of spores in Camellia japonica varied with location. Spores belonging to the genus Gigaspora were not found in Camellia japonica in Yesongri evergreen forests adjacent to the sea. Glomus sp. was the major constituent of the spore assemblage at this site. The most abundant species in Camellia japonica in the Yesongri evergreen forests in Pogildo was Glomus borealis. In the soil of a mountain at Buwhangri, in the central location of the island at an elevation of 250 m, Gigaspora sp. was present and Glomus sp. was a major constituent of the spore assemblage. In the urban area of Haenam spore densities were much higher than in the Pogildo area. The most abundant species in Camellia japonica in the urban area of Haenam was Gigaspora sp..

  • Seismic performance of structures depends on the force flow mechanism inside the structure. Discontinuity regions, like beam-column joints, are often affected during earthquake event due to the complex and discontinuous load paths. The evaluation of shear strength and identification of failure mode of the joint region are helpful to (i) define the strength hierarchy of the beam-column sub-assemblage, (ii) quantify the influence of different parameters on the behaviour of beam-column joint and, (iii) develop suitable and adequate strengthening scheme for the joints, if required, to obtain the desired strength hierarchy. In view of this, it is very important to estimate the joint shear strength and identify the failure modes of the joint region as it is the most critical part in any beam-column sub-assemblage. One of the most effective models is softened strut and tie model which was developed by incorporating force equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive laws of cracked reinforced concrete. In this study, softened strut and tie model, which incorporates force equilibrium equations, compatibility conditions and material constitutive relation of the cracked concrete, are used to simulate the shear strength behaviour and to identify failure mechanisms of the beam-column joints. The observations of the present study will be helpful to arrive at the design strategy of the joints to ensure the desired failure mechanism and strength hierarchy to achieve sustainability of structural systems under seismic loading.

  • Biotope analysis(UPGM) of the data on the total benthic foraminferal assemblage (Kim and Han, 1982) collected from the southeastern sea off the Korean Peninsula shows that foraminiferal assemblages are related to the water masses prevailing in the study area. South Proper facies is governed by the Tsushima Warm Current, and Southern Deep facies is influenced by the cold water mass moved down along the bottom. Northern Nearshore facies is governed by the North Korea Cold Current, and North Proper facies is affected by the North Korea Cold Current and Japan Sea Proper Water. It is also evident that the upper part of the study area is under the influence of the North Korea Cold Current rather than the East Korea Warm Current which flows northward along/or off the right side of the study area. Planktonic foraminiferal occurrence also supports this biotope analysis.

  • Stannite is mainly found in hypothermal ore deposits, whereas mawsonite and stannoidite occur characteristically with bornite and chalcopyrite in subvolcanic (xenothermal) ore deposits. Mawsonite always shows the replacement on the rims of stannoidite grains or along the grain boundaries of stannoidite, bornite and chalcopyrite. In the Tada mine, Japan, the following mineral assemblages of the Cu-Fe-Sn-S minerals were observed. 1) bornite-stannoidite; 2) stannoidite-chalcopyrite; 3) stannite-chalcopyrite; 4) bornite-mawsonite-stannoidite; 5) bornite-stannoidite-chalcopyrite; 6) mawsonite-stannoidite-chalcopyrite; 7) stannoidite-stannite-chalcopyrite; 8) bornite-mawsonite-stannoidite-chalcopyrite The heating and D.T.A. experimental results indicate that natural stannoidite containing 3 weight percent of zinc decomposes to bornite, stannite and chalcopyrite at above $500^{\circ}C$, whereas zinc-free synthetic stannoidite is stable up to $800^{\circ}C$. The stability temperature of zincian stannoidite depends on the zinc content. Mawsonite is stable at temperatures below $390^{\circ}C$ and decomposed to stannoidite, bornite and chalcopyrite above it. According to the sulfur fugacity determination by the electrum tarnish method the univariant assemblage of mawsonite, bornite, stannoidite and chalcopyrite requires a higher sulfur fugacity than that of bornite, stannoidite and chalcopyrite assemblage.

  • The seasonal and interannual variation in the species composition and abundance of the decapod assemblage (shrimps, crabs, and hermit crabs) collected using pots in the coastal waters off Gori were studied between 2005 and 2008. During the study period, 49 decapod species belonging to 19 families were collected. The dominant species were Crangon hakodatei, Pandalus gracilis, Carcinoplax longimana, Charybdis bimaculata, Carcinoplax vestita, Diogenes edwardsii, and Dardanus arrosor. These seven species accounted for 95.46% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, biomass, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number and biomass of individuals occurred in July 2006. The number and biomass of individuals were higher in summer and lower in winter, and the diversity indices were lower in summer than in the other seasons. The abundance of dominant species showed some seasonal and interannual change; in particular, those of C. hakodatei and P. gracilis corresponded with the bottom water temperature.

  • This study focuses on the application of collage techniques to contemporary fashion and intends to show that collage techniques have a significant influence on contemporary fashion, leading to a more creative design aesthetic through the combination of fashion and art. The author carried out an empirical analysis focusing on domestic and global fashion collections from 2000S/S to 2010F/W, fashion publications, and internet data, along with a literature review. As a result, the papier-colle approach, as represented by cubism, showed a creative surface effect through the texture of the paper itself by applying real paper and other materials directly to the clothing items. Second, Dadaist ready-made expressed a distortion of the material and freedom of expression by creating a collage with ready-made fashion items and daily necessities. Third, a photomontage expressed unique images by printing various images of photos that contrasted in perspective. In addition to this, beauty in dissonance and a new sense of space by a collage of disparate material. Fourth, decalcomanie was expressed by printing methods, giving a stable image of the symmetry of the perfect landscape as well as the unintended effect of coincidence in abstract images and particular textures. Fifth, assemblage as the representative collage technique of pop art introduced the overall object itself or modified form by combining it with fashion to express three-dimensional aggregate structures.

  • An algal assay procedure using an indigenous phytoplankton assemblage was tested to estimate the propagation of red tide phytoplankton species and determine the optimal time interval at which to measure growth yield in eutrophic marine waters where red tides frequently occur. Various red tide phytoplankton species were propagated on a large scale by adding nitrogen or phosphorous. This procedure was useful for estimating the limiting nutrient, elucidating the mechanisms underlying red tides, and determining the levels of increases in organic matter in eutrophic coastal waters. The algal assay using indigenous C. polykrikoides showed that this species did not always propagate, apparently because of very low concentrations of trigger elements that are necessary for its growth, rather than as a result of other environmental characteristics, e.g., water temperature or stress from sampling. In the winter, when water temperatures are lower than in spring, summer, or autumn, maximum propagation and the limiting nutrient could be estimated by measuring phytoplankton biomass at 2 - 3-day intervals. However, in the other seasons, when water temperatures are higher, phytoplankton biomass should be measured at 2-day intervals. In particular, daily monitoring will be required to determine precise growth yields in warm seasons.

  • Phase transformation of Bi-2223 tape during the final heat treatment has been investigated through the various duration time of heat treatment in a specially designed 3-step heat treatment. It was found that the phase assemblage in the sintering was determined by the sintering time and temperature. In this study, sintering time was changed to optimize the Bi-2223 phase assemblage, and acquire high critical current density. High critical current samples with Ic = 85 A and Je = 8.9 kA/$cm^2$ have been measured at 77K and self-field for 55-filament tapes sintered by optimum condition.

  • Corrosion of reinforcement is the greatest threat to the safety of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Most of the olden structures are gravity load designed (GLD) and are seismically deficient. In present study, investigations are carried out on corrosion damaged GLD beam-column sub-assemblages under reverse cyclic loading, in order to evaluate their seismic performance. Five GLD beam-column sub-assemblage specimens comprising of i) One uncorroded ii) Two corroded iii) One uncorroded strengthened with steel bracket and haunch iv) One corroded strengthened with steel bracket and haunch, are tested under reverse cyclic loading. The performances of these specimens are assessed in terms of hysteretic behaviour, energy dissipation and strength degradation. It is noted that the nature of corrosion i.e. uniform or pitting corrosion and its location have significant influence on the behaviour of corrosion damaged GLD beam-column sub-assemblages. The corroded specimens with localised corrosion pits showed in-cyclic strength degradation. The study also reveals that external strengthening which provides an alternate force path but depends on the strength of the existing reinforcement bars, is able to mitigate the seismic risk of corroded GLD beam-column sub-assemblages to the level of control uncorroded GLD specimen.
