PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to estimate the optimum content of an inorganic additive for cold-recycled asphalt mixtures and evaluate its performance. METHODS : An indirect tensile test, a tensile-strength ratio test, and an indirect tensile-fatigue test were conducted on cold-recycling asphalt mixtures with various additives. RESULTS : The laboratory performance tests indicated that granulated blast-furnace slag mixed with inorganic and cement activators provided optimum performance. The performance results of the cold-recycled asphalt pavement were similar to the inorganic and cement activators' performance in terms of the indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio, and indirect tensile-fatigue test. CONCLUSIONS : Overall, the performance of a cold-recycled asphalt mixture using inorganic additives and emulsion asphalt was comparable to a warm-recycled asphalt mixture. However, more experiments aimed at improving its performance and studying the effect of the inorganic additives must be conducted.

The stiffness of chemcrete modified asphalt mixtures increase rapidly with time in the presence f oxygen and high temperature, Sometimes the asphalt pavements that have chemcrete modified asphalt mixture applied on the surface none show premature cracking because of the excessive increase in the stiffness f the asphalt mixtures. To mitigate this premature cracking, the chemcrete modified mixtures have been used as a base course material. In this study, the performance of the chemcrete modified asphalt binder and mixtures are investigated through a course of various laboratory tests including dynamic shear rheometer and bending beam rheometer tests for binders and uniaxial tensile fatigue, wheel tracking, and moisture damage tests for the mixtures. And also the resilient modulus of the conventional and chemcrete modified mixtures are compared based on the test results conducted on the specimens obtained from various in-situ test sections. It can be concluded from the tests results that the chemcrete modified mixtures show better rutting resistance than conventional mixtures. The chemcrete modified mixtures may have low temperature cracking when it is applied in the cold region. The stiffness of chemcrete modified mixtures is approximately 50 percent higher than that of conventional mixtures more than two years after the chemcrete modified mixture was applied in the base course.

This study evaluates the laboratory properties of asphalt binder and mixture modified with R-EPDM(Recycling Ethylene Propylene Dien Monometer), which consists of R-EPDM as a main ingredient that is an industrial by-product made by manufacturing waste EPDM below 50 mesh as an additive. Superpave system was used to determine the PG(Performane Grade) and evaluate the property of R-EPDM modified binder. OACs(Optimum Asphalt Contents) of R-EPDM modified asphalt mixtures were determined by Superpave mix design using gyratory compactor and wheel tracking test and moisture susceptibility test were carried out with R-EPDM modified asphalt mixtures at OACs. The results from these tests, rutting-resistance and freezing and thawing resistance by moisture susceptibility of R-EPDM modified asphalt mixtures were superior to one of general asphalt mixtures(AP-5).

PURPOSES: The objective of this study was to determine the optimum ratio of mix design, for a reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content of 100%, for spray injection application. METHODS: A literature review revealed that spray injection is an efficient and cost-effective application for fixing small defective regions of an asphalt pavement. Rapid-setting polymer-modified asphalt mixtures prepared from two types of rapid-setting polymer asphalt emulsion were subjected to Marshall stability and wet track abrasion tests, in order to identify the optimum mix designs. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Different mix designs of type A and type B emulsions were prepared using RAP and virgin aggregates, in order to compare the performance and determine the optimum mix design. The performance of mixtures prepared with RAP was superior to that of mixtures containing virgin aggregates. Moreover, for optimum ratio of the design, the binder content prepared from RAP was set to 1~2% lower than that consisting of virgin aggregates. Compared to their Type A counterparts, type B mixtures consisting of a reactive emulsion performed better in the Marshall stability and wet track abrasion tests. The initial results confirmed the advantages associated with using RAP for spray injection applications. Further studies will be performed to verify the difference in the optimum mix design and performance obtained in the lab-scale test and tests conducted at the job site by using the spray injection machine.

PURPOSES : The main purposes of this study are to examine the influences of polyethylene wax-based WMA additive on the optimum asphalt content of warm-recycled asphalt mixture based on the Marshall mix design and to evaluate performance of warm-recycled asphalt mixture containing 30% RAP with polyethylene wax-based WMA additive. METHODS: Physical and rheological properties of the residual asphalt were evaluated in terms of penetration, softening point, ductility and performance grade (PG) in order to examine the effects of polyethylene wax-based WMA additive on the residual asphalt. Also, To evaluate performance characteristics of the warm-recycled asphalt mixtures using polyethylene wax-based WMA additive along with a control hot-recycled asphalt mixture, indirect tensile strength test, modified Lottman test, dynamic immersion test, wheel tracking test and dynamic modulus test were conduced in the laboratory. RESULTS : Based on the limited laboratory test results, polyethylene wax-based WMA additive is effective to decrease mixing and compacting temperatures without compromising the volumetric characteristics of warm-recycled asphalt mixtures compared to hot-recycled asphalt mixture. Also, it doesn't affect the optimum asphalt content on recycled-asphalt mixture. All performance test results show that the performance of warm-recycled asphalt mixture using polyethylene wax-based WMA additive is similar to that of a control hot-recycled asphalt mixture. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the performance of warm-recycled asphalt mixture using polyethylene wax-based WMA additive is comparable to hot-recycled asphalt mixture.
This paper describes a research study on the durability and strength properties of thin quiet-permeable asphalt concrete. Such asphalt mixes have high porosity, which offers significantly better drainages than normal mix designs. However, these materials also exhibit poor durability and strength limiting their use in pavement application. To remedy this, fiber and polymer modifiers have been proposed. All samples were added to modified binder which were prepared with or without the modifiers and fiber using Marshall mix procedures and were experimentally tested using various standardized testing procedures including percent air void for porosity, cantabro test and marshall stability. In general, the results of marshall stability showed that modified mixtures were equivalent to unmodified mixtures. Especially, the result of cantabro tested modified mixtures was superior to unmodified mixtures.

This study is a fundamental research for recycling waste vinyl in asphalt concrete mixture for roadway pavement. The mixing method and proper content of waste polyethylene(PE) film were determined through preliminary mix design. This study was performed mix designs using 2 type graduations of aggregate and used two types waste PE film. The asphalt concrete mixture was satisfied with the specification of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. Its showed that dense grade asphalt concrete mixture containing waste vinyl were higher performance in comparision to other mixtures(common dense grade mixture and gap grade mixtures). From results of this study, it was confirmed that addition of waste vinyl improved on quality of asphalt concrete mixture.
This study developed a permanent deformation model for asphalt concrete based on shear properties. Repeated load triaxial compression (RLTC), triaxial compressive strength, and indirect tension strength tests were performed for the three types of asphalt mixtures at various loading and temperature conditions to correlate shear properties of asphalt mixtures to rutting performance. For the given mixtures, as testing temperature increased, cohesion decreased, but friction angle was insensitive to temperature at $40^{\circ}C$ or higher. It was observed that deviatoric stress, confining pressure, temperature, and load frequency affected the permanent deformation of asphalt mixtures significantly. The permanent deformation model based on shear stress to strength ratio and loading time was developed using the laboratory test results and calibrated using accelerated pavement test data. The proposed model was able to predict the permanent deformation of the asphalt mixtures in a wide range of loading and temperature conditions with constant model coefficients.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum mix design of the content of 100 % reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for spray injection application with different binder types. METHODS : Literature review revealed that spray injection method is the one of the efficient and economical methods for repairing a small defective area on an asphalt pavement. The Rapid-Setting Polymer modified asphalt mixtures using two types of rapid setting polymers-asphalt emulsion and a quick setting polymer asphalt emulsion-were subjected to the following tests to determine optimum mix designs and for performance comparison: 1) Marshall stability test, 2) Retained stability test, 3) Wet track abrasion test, and 4) Dynamic stability test. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Type A, B, and C emulsions were tested with different mix designs using RAP aggregates, to compare the performances and determine the optimum mix design. Performance of mixtures with Type A emulsion exceeded that of mixtures with Type B and C emulsion in all aspects. In particular, Type A binder demonstrated the highest performance for WTAT at low temperature. It demonstrated the practicality of using Type A mixture during the cold season. Furthers studies are to be performed to verify the optimum mix design for machine application. Differences in optimum mix designs for machine application and lab application will be corrected through field tests.

PURPOSES : This paper presents a mix design method for using steel slag as an aggregate for asphalt mixtures. METHODS : Steel slag has a different density and absorption rate than natural aggregates. The asphalt content was calculated according to the steel slag characteristics, and the formula for aggregate-gradation correction was presented. RESULTS : The asphalt mix was designed using the proposed equations. Using the proposed mix design method, it was possible to design the asphalt mixture according to the target-usage amount of the recycled aggregate. CONCLUSIONS : The suggested method can be used for asphalt mix design using aggregates with different densities and absorption rates. It is expected to contribute to quality improvement by ensuring accurate calculation of mixing ratios for steel slag asphalt mixtures.
