This study evaluated influence of the loading head dimension on characteristics of deformation strength ($S_D$) of asphalt mixtures. Kim test and Wheel tracking (WT) test were conducted to evaluate $S_D$ characteristics with relation to WT results for various mixtures. The $S_D$ values and coefficient of variation of $S_D$ values of r=10mm were smaller than those of r=10.5mm. It was also found that $S_D$ values obtained using r=10mm loading head showed high correlations with rut parameters of WT test. It was indicated that the aggregate size and radius (r) of round cut were statistically significant variables on $S_D$ at = 0.05 level in the analysis of variance. However, in interaction of r and aggregate size showed no significance within $10{\sim}19mm$ aggregate size at the same level. Therefore, it was concluded that the diameter (D) of 40mm and the bottom edge radius (r) of 10mm was suitable dimension of loading head for deformation strength test.

This study dealt with developing a new approach for finding properties which might represent rut resistance characteristics of asphalt mixture under static loading. Two aggregates, a normal asphalt (pen 60-80) and 5 polymer-modified asphalts were used in preparation of 12 dense-graded mixtures. Marshall mix design was used in determination of OAC and each mixture at the OAC was prepared for a newly-developed Kim test on Marshall specimen (S=10cm) and gyratory specimen (S=15cm), and for wheel tracking test. Kim test used Marshall loading frame and specimens were conditioned for 30min at $60^{\circ}C$ before loading through Kim tester an apparatus consisting of a loading column and a specimen and column holder Diameter (D) of column was 3cm and 4cm with each column having different radius (r) of round cut at the bottom. The static load was applied at 50mm/min in axial direction of the specimen, not in diametral direction. The maximum load ($P_{max}$) and vertical deformation (y) at $P_{max}$ point were obtained from the test. A strength value was calculated based on the $P_{max}$ r, D and y by using the equation $K_D = 4P_{max}/{\pi}(D-2(r-\sqrt{2ry-y^2}))^2$ and is defined as the deformation strength ($kgf/cm^2$). The values of $P_{max}$/y and $K_I=K_D/y$ were also calculated. In general the leading column diameter and radius of round cut were significant factors affecting $K_D$ and $P_{max}$ values while specimen diameter was not. The statistical analyses showed the $K_D$ had the best correlation with rut depth and dynamic stability. The next best correlation was found from $P_{max}$ which was followed by $P_{max}$/y and $K_I$ in order.
Millions of scrap tires are discarded annually in Turkey. The bulk of which are currently landfilled or stockpiled. These tires consume valuable landfill space or if improperly disposed, create a fire hazard and provide a prolific breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. Used tires pose both a serious public and environmental health problem which means that economically feasible alternatives for scrap tire disposal must be found. Some of the current uses of scrap tires are tire-derived fuel, creating barrier reefs and as an asphalt additive in the form of crumb rubber. However, there is a much need for the development of additional uses for scrap tires. One development the creation of shreds from scrap tires that are coarse grained, free draining and have a low compacted density thus offering significant advantages for use as lightweight subgrade fill and backfill material. This paper reports a comprehensive laboratory study that was performed to evaluate the use of a shredded tire-sand mixture as a backfill material in trench conditions. A steel frame test tank with glass walls was created to replicate a classical trench section in field conditions. The results of the test demonstrated that shredded tires mixed with sand have a definite potential to be effectively used as backfill material for buried pipe installations.

Many distress mechanisms in pavement are known to be caused by the poor mechanical properties of bituminous concretes. Among many mechanical properties, tensile strength is one of the more important indicates that represent the resistance of pavement to traffic loading. However, there has been no relationship established between the strength and distress mechanisms. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate a correlation between the tensile strength value and the intensity of distress in bituminous concrete. Distress data were collected from an extensive field investigation over 77km of a four-lane highway in South Carolina, USA, and from laboratory prepared specimens in two phases of study. Strength data were obtained from a total of more than 400 field cores taken from the same highway and from 640marshall specimens of surface course mixture prepared in the laboratory. These data were analyzed using statistical test techniques. It was found from statistical analyses that the tensile strength of bituminous concrete had a strong relation with the pavement condition in the field. In the analysis of rutting and stripping, low strength concrete showed a higher distress rate in the mixture, and mixtures under distress in the field showed obviously reduced strength values. Stripping was found to be the most significant distress mechanism that was correlated with low strength bituminous concrete. Rutting appeared more frequently in a low strength pavement section of the highway as a sign of failure due to traffic loading.

Since the relatively stiff binder shows a higher tensile strength as well as higher rutting resistance, it is believed that the binder stiffness is an important factor for rutting and tensile strength of asphalt mixtures. The typical tensile property is measured by indirect tensile strength (ITS) test at $25^{\circ}C$ and the rutting resistance is most widely measured by wheel tracking (WT) test at $60^{\circ}C$. The deformation strength ($S_D$) is newly developed property to estimate rut resistance of asphalt concretes at $60^{\circ}C$. The ITS and $S_D$ are very simple to measure by static test techniques, but the WT is measured by repeated loading procedure which requires relatively longer time and more efforts. Since these three properties are highly dependent upon the binder stiffness, it may be possible to estimate one property from another. Therefore, this study investigate the possibility of estimating the rutting characteristics (measured by WT test) by ITS or $S_D$ test, and the ITS by $S_D$. Because of binder stiffness effect, in the WT estimation by ITS, a tendency was observed for the higher ITS mixture to have the lower rut depth, giving $R^2{\fallingdotseq}$0.6, on the average. The ITS estimation by $S_D$ showed $R^2{\fallingdotseq}$0.64, and the WT estimation by SD showed $R^2{\fallingdotseq}$0.84, which is highest correlation among the three. Therefore, it was concluded that there is relatively good possibility of estimating WT result by $S_D$, and even though $R^2$ is somewhat low, there is some correlation between WT and ITS.
OBJECTIVES : Bituminous materials, such as tack coat, are utilized between pavement layers for improving the bond strength in pavement construction sites. The standards regarding the application of bituminous material are not clearly presented in the Korean construction guideline without RS(C)-4. Hence, the objective of this study is to determine the optimum content of bituminous materials by analyzing interlayer shear strength (ISS) from the direct shear tester, which was developed in this research. The shear strength of tack coat was defined with the sort of bituminous materials. METHODS : The mixtures for the shear test were made using marshall mix design. The specimens were vertically and horizontally separated for the direct shear test. The separated specimens were bonded using bituminous material. The objectives of the experiment are to determine the performance of bond and shear properties resulting from slippage, rutting, shovel, and corrugation of asphalt pavements. A machine based on the Louisiana interlayer shear strength tester (LISST) of NCHRP Report-712 was developed to determine the ISS. The applied types of tack coat were RS(C)-4, AP-3, QRS-4, and BD-coat with contents of $0.3{\ell}/m^2$, $0.45{\ell}/m^2$, $0.6{\ell}/m^2$, and $0.8{\ell}/m^2$, respectively. RESULTS : Table 2 gives the results of the direct shear test using the developed shear machine. The BD-coat type indicated the highest average ISS value compared to the others. Between the surface and binder course, optimum tack coat application rates for AP-3, RS(C)-4, QRS-4, and BD-Coat were $0.6{\ell}/m^2$, $0.3{\ell}/m^2$, $0.6{\ell}/m^2$, and $0.45{\ell}/m^2$, respectively. These optimum contents were determined using the ISS value. CONCLUSIONS : The ISS values of AP-3, RS(C)-4, and QRS-4 showed similar tendencies when ISS increased in the range $0.3{\sim}0.6{\ell}/m^2$, while ISS decreased when the applied rate exceeded $0.6{\ell}/m^2$. Similarly, the highest ISS value of the BD-coat was observed when the applied rate was $0.45{\ell}/m^2$. However, shear strength was similar to the maximum value of ISS when the tack-coat application rate of BD-Coat exceeded $0.45{\ell}/m^2$.
PURPOSES : A geo-grid pavement, e.g., a stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI), can be applied to an asphalt-overlay method on the existing surface-pavement layer for pavement maintenance related to reflection cracking. Reflection cracking can occur when a crack in the existing surface layer influences the overlay pavement. It can reduce the pavement life cycle and adversely affect traffic safety. Moreover, a failed overlay can reduce the economic value. In this regard, the objective of this study is to evaluate the bonding properties between the rigid pavement and a SAMI by using the direct shear test and the pull-off test. The predicted fractural energy functions with the shear stress were determined from a numerical analysis of the moving average method and the polynomial regression method. METHODS : In this research, the shear and pull-off tests were performed to evaluate the properties of mixtures constructed using no interlayer, a tack-coat, and SAMI with fabric and without fabric. The lower mixture parts (describing the existing pavement) were mixed using the 25-40-8 joint cement-concrete standard. The overlay layer was constructed especially using polymer-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA) pavement. It was composed of an SMA aggregate gradation and applied as the modified agent. The sixth polynomial regression equation and the general moving average method were utilized to estimate the interlayer shear strength. These numerical analysis methods were also used to determine the predictive models for estimating the fracture energy. RESULTS : From the direct shear test and the pull-off test results, the mixture bonded using the tack-coat (applied as the interlayer between the overlay layer and the jointed cement concrete) had the strongest shear resistance and bonding strength. In contrast, the SAMI pavement without fiber has a strong need for fractural energy at failure. CONCLUSIONS : The effects of site-reflection cracking can be determined using the same tests on cored specimens. Further, an empirical-mechanical finite-element method (FEM) must be done to understand the appropriate SAMI application. In this regard, the FEM application analy pavement-design analysis using thesis and bonding property tests using cored specimens from public roads will be conducted in further research.

This paper presents the results of accelerated pavement tests (APT) that simulate permanent deformation (rutting) of asphalt concrete pavements under different temperatures and loading courses. Also, finite element (FE) analysis has been conducted to predict the test results. Test section for APT is the same as one of test sections at Korea Expressway Corporation test road and is subjected to a constant moving dual tire wheel load of APT at three different temperatures: 30, 40, $50^{\circ}C$. The moving wheel is applied at different loading courses within a 75cm wide wheel path to account for traffic wandering. Also, the effect of wandering on permanent deformation development is investigated numerically with three wandering schemes. In this study, ABAQUS is adopted to model APT pavement section with plain stain elements and creep strain rate model is used to take into account viscoplastic stain of asphalt concrete mixtures, and elastic layer properties are back-calculated from FWD measurements. Plus, the effect of boundary condition and subgrade on FE permanent deformation predictions is investigated. A full FE model that accounted for subgrade provided more realistic rut depth predictions, indicating subgrade has contributed to surface rutting.

In this study, tensile adhesive strength(TAS) test was carreid out for evaluated the effects of temperature conditions (-20, -10, 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, $40^{\circ}C$) on the tensile adhesive characteristics about 4 type waterproofing membranes which were commercially used in bridge decks. And, failure appeariences of waterproofing systems in each temperature after TAS test were observed the sawing surfaces of waterproofing systems for whether or not damaged of waterproofing membranes. Also, correction coefficient of TAS with temperature were calculated using 4 type waterproofing membrane. It could be shown that the higher TAS and shear adhesive strength, the lower temperature, regardless of the type of waterproofing membrane. Temperature sensibility of TAS was especially remarkable in epoxy membrane. Failure type was occurred the ductile failure in $30^{\circ}C\;and\;40^{\circ}C$. From these results, it was shown that if ambient temperature above $30^{\circ}C$ maintains for a long time, waterproofing membrane will be deformed by softening. Otherwise, waterproofing membrane in temperature below $20^{\circ}C$ shown that occurred the brittle failure. From the results of visual observation of cutting surface for specimen, the thin waterproofing membranes shown indented by hot aggregate of the asphalt mixtures. Therefore, it could be known that the specification of waterproofing membrane thickness is necessary by waterproofing membrane type. As temperature change varied with pavement depth, the interface temperature was more important than ambient temperature in TAS test. Now, TAS test results were limited only in $-10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$ temperature, but correction coefficient of TAS by ambient temperature could be used as a solution to deal with this problem.
The 19 mm-sized aggregate was produced by melting vinyl waste (waste polyethylene film) generated from vinyl greenhouses in rural areas. It was mixed with As'cone at various weight ratios, and then insulation effect test, tension test after repeated freezing and thawing, ice pull-out strength test and field density test were conducted for the mixtures. These results demonstrated that as the mixing ratio of polyethylene aggregate increased, the insulation effect increased, due to the many pore spaces that existed in the polyethylene aggregate. After repeatedly freezing and thawing As'cone, the tensile strength significantly increased at 2.5% of the polyethylene aggregate content rather than 0% of polyethylene aggregate content but it also slightly decreased at 5% and 10% of polyethylene aggregate content in comparison to 2.5% of its polyethylene aggregate content. As'cone added with polyethylene aggregate by 2.5% resulted in lower ice pull-out strength than that of normal As'cone. As a result of the porosity test for the samples taken at the site, porosity of the As'cone, which added polyethylene aggregate, was smaller than that of the general As'cone.
