  • This study undertakes an evaluation of blast effect through the analysis of the contribution rate and effect that different artificial joint number, artificial joint spacing and artificial joint angle have on blast velocity. Blast velocity according to the different state of the artificial joint was obtained using AUTODYN, a dynamic analysis program. The result of the numerical analysis was subjected to further normalization analysis. For the contribution rate of design factors was analyzed using the robust design method. The orthogonal array used in the analysis was $L_9(3^4)$ and each parameters were having 3 levels. The result of normalization analysis regarding the artificial joint angle was indicated a tendency in which blast velocity decreased. The result of analyzing blast velocity regarding artificial joint spacing and artificial joint angle was indicated a tendency in which blast velocity decreased as artificial joint spacing increased when the angle was perpendicular. In the case of blast velocity contribution rates they were ranked in the descending order of artificial joint angle, artificial joint number, artificial joint spacing.

  • Since the rock fragmentation by blasting can affect the subsequent processes including loading, hauling and secondary crushing, its control is essential for the assessment of blasting efficiency as well as production cost. In this study, we were analyzed the rock fragmentation by the direction of artificial joint. The underground blasting experiments were performed after forming the vertical and horizontal artificial joints. The blast fragmentation was conducted by the split-desktop which is a 2D image processing program. As a result, it was found that the horizontal artificial joint was evaluated to have lower overall the size of muck pile than the vertical artificial joint and the distribution of the size of muck pile was varied. It is possible that the direction of artificial joint could suppress the occur of oversize muck pile and control to a certain size or less.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the influences of the angle of artificial joints, the distance between the artificial joints and the blast hole, and the number of artificial joints on the pressure wave propagation, crack propagation, and blast wave velocity. The evaluation was conducted numerically by use of the Euler-Lagrange solver supported by the AUTODYN, which is a dynamic FEM program. As a result, it was found that the blast wave velocity was decreased most rapidly as either the distance between the artificial joint and the blast hole was decreased or the angle of the artificial joint was increased. In contrast to the case of no artificial joint, the amount of attenuation of the blast wave velocity was considerably large when an artificial joint was present. However, the effect of the number of artificial joint on the attenuation of the blast wave velocity was negligible under the given condition.

  • The artificial joint is consisted with the upper structure of tungsten alloy steel and the lower part of polyethelene are applied with load. When this joint is applied with load in this study, the load distribution at the joint and the stress distribution of support hole to install the joint are investigated by finite element analysis. These results can be utilized at obtaining the basic material to have the experiment for the real thing. The crack is initiated as the load is concentrated at the end of corner on the upper structure. This behavior is in accord with a case of tissue damage due to the breakage of artificial joint reported at medical science.

  • Various mechanical test were conducted on conventional and crosslinked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) all prepared from the same lot of medical grade GUR 1050 for artificial joint. The conventional materials were not irradiated and treated by heating. The cosslinked materials were irradiated with $25kGy{\sim}200kGy$ by gamma-ray andthen annealed or remelted. Gamma-ray irradiation and heat treatment process were found to significantly impact the crystallinity, and hence the mechanical behavior, of the highly crosslinked UHMWPE. The radiation dose and heating conditions were key predictors of the uniaxial yielding, plastic flow, and failure properties of conventional and highly crosslinked UHMWPE. The correlation model from experiments would be the basic information to enhance the were resistance of artificial joint liner.

  • Artificial joints are used when joints lose their function because of either the destruction or damage of the composing bones of the joints. To evaluate the primary stability of a femur-implant system, the relative displacement caused by a repeated load is measured immediately after the insertion of the artificial joint. For more accurate stability evaluation, the accurate measurement of the penetration displacement of the artificial joint to the bone and the rotation angle of the artificial joint is essential. In this study, to evaluate the primary stability of the femur-implant system, we propose a new relative displacement measurement method. By using this new method, we comparatively evaluate the primary stability for various surgical methods and the varying stiffness of the cadaver femur-implant itself.

  • In this paper, we studied a computer based three dimensional implantation system of artificial hip joint. The system can be utilized for doctors to select a suitable artificial femur which is best-fit for the patient and to find out the optimal implanting position as well. We proposed a new numerical index to measure the fitness between the artificial hip joint and the patient's femur. The proposed fitness index accounts for the variance of the distance between the outer contours of artificial hip joint and the femur in addition to the conventional area comparison. A few simulation are run to show results of fitness measurement and compared to the conventional method.

  • The joint diseases threaten modern people's healthy life. They bring about a long pain, an anasarca, loss of joint function or even deformation and rigidity of joint, limiting people's ordinary activities much. The chronic joint patients may be subject to some hypochondria caused by anxiety for their life, social isolation, financial problem and physical disability. Therefore, this population should continue to be duely taken care of by medical personnels. In particular, nurses should adequately help these people to recover and improve their health through suitable adaptations. With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at reviewing these patients' conditions in their ordinary life before and after a plastic operation for artificial joint replacement as well as their satisfaction with their life. For this purpose, those patients who underwent some plastic operations for artificial joint replacement at university hospitals in Seoul from January 2, 1993 to June 30, 1995 were selected as the population of this study. Among them, 87 people were randomly sampled to answer a questionnaire designed specially. For the surveying tools, Jette's (1980) scale was applied to address the sample people's inconveniences experienced and supports received in their ordinary life, while the scale of Wood, Wylie & Sheafer was used to measure their satisfaction with their life. The collected data were analyzed for percentiles, means, SD, t-test and Pearson's correlations. The results of survey can be summarized as follows ; As a result of t-test the frequencies of other people's support before and after the plastic operation, it was disclosed that those who underwent the operation were supported less frequently. In addition, as a result of t-testing their satisfaction with life before and after the operation, it was found that the operation increased their satisfaction with life significantly. Meanwhile, as a result of t-test inconveniences, frequencies of supports and life satisfaction before and after the plastic operation for artificial knee replacement, it was disclosed that only the inconveniences were significantly reduced after the operation. In contrast, the t-test the variables before and after the plastic operation for artificial hip replacement, it was found that only the frequencies of other people's supports were significant reduced after the operation. Furthermore, the differences 6 months, one year and two years after the plastic operation for artificial joint replacement were t-tested on the variables. As a result, it was disclosed that people's inconvenience, frequencies of supports and life satisfaction were not improved 6 months after the operation but their frequencies of supports decreased significantly one year after, while their inconveniences and life satisfaction were significantly improved two years after. As a result of analyzing the variables with Pearson's correlations, inconveniences and frequency of supports were negatively correlated significantly with the life satisfaction. In conclusion, the plastic operation for artificial joint replacement significantly improved people's living inconveniences, reduced their frequency of other people's support and enhanced their satisfaction with life. To break don the plastic operation for artificial knee replacement improved patients' inconveniences, while the plastic operation for artificial hip replacement not only improved patients' inconveniences but reduced the frequencies of other people's support also. Finally, the finding that the plastic operation for artificial joint replacement brought about the improvement two years after suggests that this period is needed for the patients to adapt themselves to the post-operation conditions.
