  • Polystyrene latex spheres (PLS) were prepared as artificial dusts by the emulsion polymerization with potassium persulfate (KPS) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) as an initiator and a stabilizer, respectively. The reaction temperature and the concentration of the initiator and stabilizer were chosen as variables to control the PLS particle size. As temperature increased, the particle size decreased considerably. Furthermore, the PLS particle size and their size distributions can be controlled minutely by adjusting the concentrations of KPS and SDS. It is confirmed that the PLS prepared in this work is monodispersed with the coefficient of variance less than 7% and are in the range of 0.1~0.5 ${\mu}m$, which are good for using as artificial dusts.

  • Monodispersed polystyrene latex spheres (PLS) and PS-MPS/silica composite nanospheres were used to test high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Prior to filter tests, all nanospheres used in this work were characterized by measuring their average particle diameters and coefficients of variation (CV) for assessing them as artificial dusts. The average particle sizes of PLS and composite nanospheres could be well controlled in the range of 100~300 nm well by changing reaction temperature and the amount of a stabilizer during emulsion polymerization. The CV of all nanospheres were also in the range of 3~7%, lower than 15% that is the criterion for monodispersed particle distributions. Furthermore the results of HEPA filter tests show that all nanospheres used were quite proper as artificial dusts for testing air filters.

  • Basic properties of artificial lightweight aggregate by using waste dusts and strength properties of LWA concrete were studied. Bulk specific gravity and water absorption of artificial lightweight aggregates varied from 1.4 to 1.7 and 13 to 16%, respectively. Crushing ratio of artificial lightweight aggregate was above 10% higher than that of crushed stone or gravel. As a result of TCLP leaching test, the leaching amount of tested heavy metal element was below the leaching standard of hazardous material. Slump, compressive strength and stress-strain properties of LWA concrete made of artificial lightweight aggregate were tested. Concrete samples derived from LWA substitution ratio of 30 vol% and W/C ratio of 45 wt% showed the best properties overall. Thermal insulation and sound insulation characteristics of light weight concrete panel with the optimum concrete proportion were tested. Average overall heat transmission of 3.293W/㎡$^{\circ}C$ was observed. It was higher by about 15% than those of normal concrete made by crushed stone. Sound transmission loss of 50.9 ㏈ in frequency of 500 ㎐ was observed. It was higher by about 13% than standard transmission loss.

  • Recently, as the fine dust level has risen rapidly, there is a great interest. Exposure to fine dust is associated with the development of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and has been reported to increase death rate. In addition, there exist damage to fine dusts continues at industrial sites. However, exposure to fine dust is inevitable in modern life. Therefore, predicting and minimizing exposure to fine dust is the most efficient way to reduce health and industrial damages. Existing fine dust prediction model is estimated as good, normal, poor, and very bad, depending on the concentration range of the fine dust rather than the concentration value. In this paper, we study and implement to predict the PM10 level by applying the Artificial neural network algorithm and the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm, which are machine learning algorithms, using the actual weather and air quality data.

  • 4 strains of the oak mushroom Lentinus edodes including the strain ASI 3046 were collected home and abroad to investigate the characterics of mycelial growth on synthetic media and sawdust media. The possibility of artificial culture of Lentinus edodes on media composed of different saw dusts and adding materials was investigated. Results were as follows: The optimum temperature for growth ranged from $22^{\circ}C$ to $26^{\circ}C$ among the lineages of Lentinus edodes. The optimal growth temperature for ASI 3046 strain and ASI 3047 strain was $26^{\circ}C$ and $22^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimal carbon source for ASI 3046 strain was glucose, and peptone and ammoinum tartrate were proved excellent as nitrogen sources. When Lentinus edodes was cultured on sawdust media by varying the mixing ratio of different sawdusts and adding materials, mixed sawdust media composed of oak sawdust(50%, v/v), poplar sawdust(50%, v/v), acorn powder(5%, v/v) and rice bran(10%, v/v) showed higher yields of fruit bodies. Results showed that the ideal strain of Lentinus edodes for artificial culture on sawdust media was strain ASI 3046.

  • Artificial and natural radioactivity in airborne, rain-out and fallout dusts in Seoul district in the period of 1963-1967 were studied by measuring gross-activity and by analyzing nuclides by means of $\\gamma$-spectrometry. Short-lived radium and thorium decay products give rise to most of the airborne activity unless the fission product concentration is extremely high and it is likely to be said activity remaining after a few days is attributable to fission products. Of seven Chinese nuclear explosions performed at Lop Nor, Sinkiang Province, two exhibited the activity of extremely high concentration of fission product and reached Seoul district around 30 hours after the explosion. The activity was followed by a sudden decrease in less than a week, in contrast to the long-lasted activity of low concentration originating from the huge tests performed by the United States and the USSR in 1956-1962. The radioactive environmental contamination in Seoul district, due to the Chiness nuclear test explosions, largely depends on the height above the earth at which the nuclear explosion is performed and the type of nuclear device as well as the weather system at the time and immediately after the explosion, especially the jet stream in middle latitude in the upper troposphere.

  • Dustfall samples were collected by the modified American dust jar (bulk type) at 5 sampling sites in the Nakdong river area from lune 2002 to May 2003. Nineteen chemical species (Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Si, V, Zn, $Cl^-$, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, and $NH_4^+$) were analyzed via the combination of ICP/AES, AAS, IC and UV. The purposes of this study were to qualitatively evaluate the chemical composition of dustfalls by examining their regional and seasonal distribution patterns. Computation of the enrichment factor showed that well-defined anthropogenic sources, particularly in Pb were found in the order Gamjeondong (industrial area), Wondong, Silla University, Samrangiin and Mulgum. The seasonal mean of soil contribution showed its highest value (16.3%) during the winter with an annual mean of 11.2%. The concentration ratio of [$SO_4^{2-}/NO_3^-$] was found to be highest (5.12) during the winter, while the lowest ratio value (3.30) was seen during the all. fall, Also regional equivalent ratios of [$SO_4^{2-}/NO_3^-$] were found in the order: Silla University (6.78), Gamjeondong (4.98), Mulgum (3.95), Wondong (3.85), and Samrangjin (2.87). Seasonal distribution of water soluble components for total dustfall were found in the order: spring (71.6%), summer (61.2%), fall (49.2%) and winter (48.6%) with a mean ratio of 57.6%. Regional contribution of sea salts of water soluble ions were found in the order: Silla university (34.5%), Gamjeondong (28.3%), Wondong (17.3%), Samrangiin (17.2%) and Mulgum (13.8%), the total mean contribution rate was 22.1%. As for the chemical composition of dustftll on the lower Nakdong river, there is a decreased influence of sea salt and artificial anthropogenic sources and increased influence of soil particle inland. Also, the total amount of deposition on the lower Nakdong river has decreased, with the river's surface serving as a confounding factor in resuspending dusts.
