Archival arrangement is essential process to preserve the context of art archives creation and accumulation while classification is important to search archival collections by their topic, type or business process. But archival arrangement is not being taken seriously in most art archives in Korea. The purpose of this study is to analyse the arrangement and classification issues of art archives in Korea, and to suggest some principles and strategies for organizing art archives more systematically. This paper begins with identifying the difference between arrangement and classification and analyses some cases of visual and performing art archives in Korea and United States in terms of archival organization. Based on these analyses, it gives some suggestions for improving the quality of arrangement and classification in Korean art archives.

In recent years, the term "art archives" has become increasingly popular, with the growing use of archives in exhibitions and program planning within domestic cultural and arts institutions. The need for art archives has been raised for reasons such as establishing the identity of art and culture and providing basic resources for academic research; however, they are now being recognized as a direct resource and service for users. Accordingly, research has also been conducted on the values, policies, and management practices of art archives in the archiving field. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research on management methodologies that can be applied to institutions that manage art archives. In particular, for the efficient use of art archives, classification, organization, and systematic management of descriptive areas must be preceded. But, There are different methods of managing art archives depending on the type of collection, the management institution, and the characteristics of the collection resources, which, in turn, makes it difficult to apply a consistent methodology for classification and description. Based on actual cases from The Art Archives, Seoul Museum of Art, this study examined the types and categories of arts, and presented the establishment of a classification system and archival description rules.

Since early 2000s, there has been a growing interest in art archives. Despite of the interest, there are only studies which did not suggest cases that the system of art archives was constructed, but had just theoretical discussions. This article reports the organizations & functions, rooms & locations, materials, acquisition institution and its limitations of "The Art Archives, Seoul Museum of Art" and describes in the archival aspect, the process through which the system of "The Art Archives, Seoul Museum of Art" had been constructed. This study reviews the implications of the archives which were established through the process, and the tasks to develop the art archives in Korea.

This study aims to propose strategies for cultivating professionals in the field of art archives, drawing insights from the perceptions and opinions of practitioners and researchers involved in the establishment of professional human resources for the systematic management and utilization of art archives. To achieve this objective, in-depth interviews with practitioners and records management researchers related to art archives and policies were conducted. The grounded theory methodology, a qualitative research approach, was used in the analysis of interviews. The outcome yielded 57 concepts, 27 subtopics, and 13 super-topics. Through this, the study provides a comprehensive review of persistently emerging challenges related to art archive professionals, and by analyzing the opinions of experts in each field, this research presents effective ways to revitalize professional human resources. Ultimately, this study offers valuable implications that underscore the significance of professionals, who are prerequisites in art archives, within society and provide a platform for art archivists in museums to establish themselves as art archive professionals.

Art Museum Archives are archives that are created by individuals and organizations that have a sufficient worth that necessitate permanent preservation. Art Museum Archives, which include various medium and types, are archives that have information and evidence based value, and are established and supported for the research of the Art Museum and Art History. For the systematic implementation and application of an Art Museum Archive, there is a need to establish related description elements, and through this not only must information on the individual archives be provided, but through a high utility finding aid, the creation context of the archived document should be provided so that users of the archive can easily access documents. In the case of Korean Art Museum Archives, there is a tendency to focus on the fragmented informational value of an individual archive document, which in reality causes the structural and contextual element characteristic of the document to be destroyed. Therefore this research supports the Hierarchical Description of Art Museum Archives and has the objective of proposing Art Archive Description Elements that promote the preservation of creation context and effective utilization. In addition, because personal records take up a large portion of Art Archives and are very diverse in terms of medium and type, a Description Element that can reflect this is attempted to be proposed.

Art archives are archives that are produced and collected in activities carried out by artists, critics, and related organizations, and a large portion consists of individual records. Because of these characteristics, art archives have a wide range of media and formats, each with their own characteristics and creators, which can lead to copyright issues in individual cases. This study conducted interviews with six art archive professionals from four institutions, secured and analyzed the copyright status and issues that occurred in the art archives field by business area, and suggested applicable measures for each copyright case.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea began operating the museum archives in October 2013. Although the museum archives have an independent flow that is distinct from discussions of the archival sciences, it is a reality as a record management organization, and therefore, access to and analysis from the viewpoint of archival science is required for efficient operation. The purpose of this study is to diagnose the method of collecting and organizing records from the viewpoint of archival sciences from the Institutional Archives of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. To this end, we theoretically examined the function of the museum, the role of the museum archives, and the scope and method of collection and arrangement of the museum archives. Based on these discussions, we analyzed the scope of the collection and the system of arrangement of the institutional archives. Then, we suggested some improvement plans.

This study provides a synthesis of the fundamental concepts of "art archives" and "archival art" while undertaking a reconsideration of the latter. Archival art refers to "artworks or art practices that utilize archival structures or methodologies." Accepted as a new trend in contemporary art, archival art is evaluated as a counternarrative and reconstructs histories that are marginalized and omitted from the public sphere. This approach reveals the contradictory nature of criticizing the contemporary archive from an anti-archival perspective while simultaneously presenting the archive as a core identity of the work. Given the limited research on archival art, often with potential contradictions regarding record authenticity, this study expands the concept of archival art, includes archaeological aspects, classifies types, and analyzes their characteristics. By approaching artists' use of archives from a traditional archaeological lens, this study broadens the scope of the examination.

This study aims to understand archival art, which is spreading in the art world, and to look at records in a new way. Archival art refers to the act of creating and exhibiting art using records as a medium of expression. Archival art is attracting attention as a method of exhibition and creation of works, forming a trend in contemporary art. Archival art was born amid changes in art creation methods resulting from the rise of conceptual art, the development of media including photography and advancements in digital technology, and the influence of Foucault and Derrida's discourse on archives. The encounter between archives and art, which originated from photographic aesthetics in the 1920s, led to archival turn in contemporary art in the 1990s, thanks to the spread of conceptual art, digital technology, and postmodernism. Archival art not only subverts traditional art creation methods, but also includes criticism and deconstruction of social systems, including modern archives. Archival art rearranges and reorganizes records according to the artist's intention, and even accepts fiction rather than fact. The essence of records in archival art is not the reproduction of the past, but the expression of present needs. The way records are utilized in archival art shakes up the concept of records in archival science, calling for a new look at records as objects with not only legal and administrative value but also aesthetic value.

The article has the characteristics of a preliminary writing about how to look at the trend of new archives 'fever' and 'impulsion' emerging around the domestic and foreign art world, which have not been paid much attention yet in the 'mainstream' archive research, and how to accept it independently. Specifically, this study aims to examine how archival art is involved in history and memory with aesthetic attitudes and methods through observation of recent tendency of domestic archive art, and what implications or influence the 'archival impulse' phenomenon in the art world can have on the research trend of 'archival studies.' First, I would like to look at the meaningful movement to reinterpret and actively accept archival impulses in concrete overseas cases, that is, the archive system of a public archive in the United States. This is followed by an attempt to explore the characteristics and characteristics of creative works that are carried out through the medium of archives, that has not yet reached the level of organization of specific archive methods but are sporadically attempted in the domestic art world. It examines how so-called 'archive artists' record unrecorded in a way that is not observed in the existing archival world, and how they summon and include excluded history in aesthetic language. In conclusion, this study explores the possibility of pulling the historical records of tradition out from archival boxes and reinterpreting them as living archives within the contemporary emotional structure from this new artistic trend called 'archival art'.
