  • Reduction of the aerodynamic drag is one of the most hot issues of car industries. Many researchers have studied in the area of drag reduction methodology using experimental tools or numerical tools. In general, car shape design is the main focus to reduce the drag in aerodynamic research area. However, not many people have studied the aerodynamic interference between running cars to figure out the drag variation. In this research, the aerodynamic interference between two running cars have been analyzed by using numerical tools, FLUENT 6.2. Several different models of cars and two different distances between two running cars are considered.

  • In OFDM-based systems, FFT is a critical component since it occupies large area and consumes more power. In this paper, we present a low hardware-cost and low power 512-point pipelined FFT design method for OFDM applications. To reduce the number of twiddle factors and to choose simple design architecture, the radix-$2^4-2^3$ algorithm are exploited. For twiddle factor multiplication, we propose a new canonical signed digit (CSD) complex multiplier design method to minimize the hardware-cost. In hardware implementation with Intel FPGA, the proposed FFT design achieves more than about 28% reduction in gate count and 18% reduction in power consumption compared to the previous approaches.

  • In the simultaneous forward-backward extrusion the effects of some process variables including area reduction, stroke advance, materials(Al 2024 and commercial pure copper) on the extrusion load, plastic flow and height ratio of upper to lower extruded parts are experimentally investigated and analyzed. Grid-marking technique is employed to visualize the plastic flow. The influence of using split and original specimen on the extrusion load and height ratio is evaluated by experiments. Experimental results show that the plastic flow if oriented to the part of lower area reduction in the begining but it is usually variated during the overall process. The configurations of plastic deformation and plastic flow are dependent on the working materials and the lubricational conditions.

  • Urbanization increases impervious area and decreases the water quantity infiltrating into soil layers. This leads to lack of ground water, it could be possibly problematic for agricultural water for crop growth in lower basins, reducing not only ground water but also streamflow quantities. One such approach to minimize the impact of urbanization is to apply low impact developments (LIDs). LIDs are to decrease the percentage of impervious area so that infiltration rate is increased, there is a need to simulate the LIDs prior to the construction. LIDs in Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) are limited to be seven types, however it is often required to simulate LIDs more than seven types. Therefore an approach to apply eleven LIDs is provided in the study, updating the model parameters. A scenario containing eleven LIDs was given by the environmental decision makers, the effect of LIDs were simulated with the expected annual costs considering establishment and maintenance costs.

  • An unconventional fabrication technique of nanoelectrode was developed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and hydrogel. Until now, the precise control of electroactive area down to a few nm2 has always been an obstacle, which limits the wide application of nanoelectrodes. Here, the nanometer-sized contact between the boron-doped diamond (BDD) as conductive AFM tip and the agarose hydrogel as solid electrolyte was well governed by the feedback amplitude of oscillation in the non-contact mode of AFM. Consequently, this low-cost and feasible approach gives rise to new possibilities for the fabrication of nanoelectrodes. The electroactive area controlled by the set point of AFM was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the ferrocenmethanol (FcMeOH) combined with quasi-solid agarose hydrogel as an electrolyte. Single copper (Cu) nanoparticle was deposited at the apex of the AFM tip using this platform whose electrocatalytic activity for nitrate reduction was then investigated by CV and Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), respectively.

  • This study aimed to assess runoff reduction performance and determine installation priorities for Permeable Pavement (PP) and Rain Barrel (RB) within the Mokgam Stream basin. Optimal design parameters were determined to maximize the effectiveness of PP and RB in reducing runoff. Furthermore, the optimal parameters were incorporated to compare the runoff reduction performance of PP and RB. Analysis of the runoff curve at the basin outlet indicated that PP demonstrated superior performance in reducing runoff during the rising limb of the curve. At the same time, RB excelled within the falling limb. Comparisons of total runoff and peak runoff reduction by sub-catchment revealed that in larger sub-catchment areas, PP outperformed RB in runoff reduction. In contrast, RB exhibited higher performance in areas with a higher impervious ratio. Based on the evaluation of runoff reduction performance for PP and RB, installation priorities were determined within the Mokgam Stream basin. The results showed that PP and RB installations were prioritized for sub-catchments with larger areas and a higher impervious ratio. Furthermore, the correlation between the ranking of runoff reduction performance and sub-catchment characteristics showed a high correlation with both the impervious area ratio and sub-catchment geometrical properties in sub-watersheds exhibiting the top 25% runoff reduction performance. These results emphasize that when determining the priority for installing LID facilities in developed urban areas, it is necessary to consider not only the impervious area ratio but also the geometrical properties of the sub-catchment.

  • A key drug for treatment of EGFR mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer is epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI). While the dosage of many general anti-tumor drugs is adjusted according to the patient body surface area, one uniform dose of most TKIs is recommended regardless of body size. In many cases, dose reduction or drug cessation is necessary due to adverse effects. Disease control, however, is frequently still effective, even after dose reduction. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the characteristics of 26 patients at Fukuoka University Hospital between January 2004 and January 2015 in whom the EGFR-TKI dose was reduced with respect to progression free survival and overall survival. There were 10 and 16 patients in the gefitinib group and the erlotinib group, respectively. The median progression-free survival in the gefitinib group and the erlotinib group was 22.4 months and 14.1 months, respectively, and the median overall survival was 30.5 months and 32.4 months, respectively. After stratification of patients by body surface area, the overall median progression-free survival was significantly more prolonged in the low body surface area (<1.45 m2) group (25.6 months) compared to the high body surface area (>1.45 m2) group (9.7 months) (p=0.0131). These results indicate that low-dose EGFR-TKI may sufficiently control disease without side effects in lung cancer patients with a small body size.

  • This study is to develop the suitable hydrologic models for determination of the size and location of detention storage facilities to restrain stormwater runoff in urban areas. Fictitious areas of two levels are considered to seize the hydrologic response characteristics. A one-square-kilometer area is selected for the catchment level, and a 10-square-kilometer area consisting of 10 catchments is adapted at the watershed level as representative of urban drainage area. In this analysis, different rainfall frequencies, land uses, drainage patterns, basin shapes and detention storage policies are considered. Flow reduction effect of detention storage facilities is deduced from storage ratio and detention basin factor. A substantial saving in detention storage volumes is achieved when the detention storage is planned at the watershed level than the catchment level. For the application of real watersheds, two watersheds in Seoul metropolitan area-Jamshil 2, Seongnae 1-are selected on the basis of hydrologic response characteristics. Through the regression analysis between dimensionless detention storage volume, dimensionless upstream area ratio and reduction rate of storage ratio, the regression equations to determine the size and location of detention storage facilities are presented.

  • This study conducted an operational evaluation of an emergency vehicle preemption system that can be operated as a wide-area unit beyond the boundaries of local governments. Analyzed the speed reduction rate of emergency vehicle dispatch data and traffic speed data to analyze the speed reduction rate of emergency vehicles operating in a wide area and region. In Goyang City, local dispatches were reduced by 50.8% and regional dispatches by 55.8%, while in Paju City, local dispatches were reduced by 55.1% and regional dispatches by 62.5%. The wide-area emergency vehicle preemption system proved to be effective when emergency vehicles were dispatched outside of local boundaries, such as confirming that there were many dispatches from Paju-si to Goyang-si when there were no large hospitals nearby. This study aims to help spread the wide-area emergency vehicle preemption system. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to compare noise reduction quantities between before/after two-layer low noise pavement implementation using equivalent noise level analysis and to analyze the noise reduction effects of the two layer low noise pavement with a statistical method such as the Anderson-Darling Test. METHODS : In order to compare and to analyze noise reduction effects between before/after two-layer low noise pavement implementation, data acquisition as noise levels on a roadside and an apartment rooftop was conducted in the study area. The equivalent noise level was estimated in order to compare noise reduction quantities and the Anderson-Darling Test was carried out for estimating noise reduction effects of the two-layer low noise pavement. RESULTS : The equivalent noise levels of before/after two-layer low noise pavement implementation for the roadside during the daytime are 65.355 dB and 63.520 dB and during the nighttime are 62.463 dB and 59.088 dB. The equivalent noise levels for the apartment rooftop during daytime are 57.301 dB and 59.088 dB and during the nighttime are 54.616 dB and 52.464 dB. Also two-layer low noise pavement decreased the noise reduction effects estimated with the statistical method as the Anderson-Darling test for the roadside during the daytime by around 66.68% and decreased noise reduction effects on the roadside during the nighttime by 0.70%. Moreover it reduced noise reduction effects in the apartment rooftop during the daytime and nighttime by 0% and 96.32%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result of this study, two-layer low noise pavement can positively affect noise reduction during both the daytime and nighttime according to the results of estimating the equivalent noise levels and the Anderson-Darling test.
