위상면궤적을 이용한 전력계통의 고장판별에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Classification of Arcing Faults in Power Systems using Phase Plane Trajectory Method)

  • Recently, there is greater demand for stable supply of electric power as higher level of our living. It becomes the important problem that the cause of fault in power system is found out in early stage, if once it occurs. In this respect, accurate classification of arcing faults in power systems is vitally important. This paper presents a new classification method for arcing faults in power system. To obtain data of various faults including high impedance fault(HIF) and low impedance fault(LIF), HIF model with the ZnO arrester is adopted and implemented within the overall transmission system model based on the electromagnetic transients program(EMTP). Results of phase plane trajectory if Clarke modal transformation using postfault current and voltage are utilized to classify types of arcing faults. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a typical 154 kV korean transmission system under various fault conditions. As can be seen from results, phase plane trajectory of postfault current should be combined with that of o component from Clarke modal transformation to give reliability of clear fault classification. Thus the proposed method can classify arcing faults including LIFs and HIFs accurately in power systems.

  • Detection of arcing high impedance faults has been a perplexing in the power distribution protection. Transient analysis of distribution disturbances for fault discrimination from other normal events is important for a secure protection of the power system. A simple parameter of wave form distortion quantification is used to analyze the behaviors of arcing faults and normal distribution disturbances. Theoretical perspectives of the transients were studied and actual disturbances were examined. From this investigation, a discrimination guideline based on the revised crest factor is developed. The discrimination method has a high potential to enhance the reliability and security for the distribution system protection.

Mitigation of high energy arcing faults in nuclear power plant medium voltage switchgear

  • A high energy arcing fault event occurred in the medium-voltage (13.8 kV and 4.16 kV) metalclad switchgears in a nuclear power plant not only affecting switchgear but also connected equipment due to the arc energy. The high energy arcing fault also causes a fire that influences the safety function of the unit. Therefore, from the safety point of view, it is necessary to evaluate the influences of high energy arcing fault events on the safety functions of nuclear power plants. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the characteristics of high energy arcing faults and propose a high energy arcing fault mitigation scheme for medium voltage networks in nuclear power plants.

  • This paper present a new verb efficient numerical algorithm for arcing faults detection and fault distance estimation in transmission line. It is based on the fundamental differential equations describing the transients on a transmission line before, during and alter the fault occurrence, and on the application of the "Least Error Squares Technique"for the unknown model parameter estimation. If the arc voltage estimated is a near zero, the fault is without arc, in other words the fault is permanent fault. If the arc voltage estimated has any high value, the faust is identified as an fault, or the transient fault. In permanent faults case, fault distance estimation is necessary. This paper uses the model of the arcing fault in transmission line using ZnO arrestor and resistance to be implemented within EMTP. One purpose of this study is to build a structure for modeling of arcing fault detection and fault distance estimation algorithm using Matlab programming. In this paper, This algorithm has been designed in Graphic user interface(GUI).

  • Many electrical fires are occurred by leakage currents and sparks generated by a short circuit. Earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) should be tripped at the moment of the faults mentioned above. In this paper, we described the tripping characteristics of ELCBs against parallel arcing faults. A diesel engine generator with the capacity of 375 kVA source was adopted to provide enough large current when a parallel arcing occurred. The experimental results showed that most ELCBs we experimented were not tripped against short-duration pulse currents produced by parallel arcing because the ELCBs are designed to be tripped by a large current with long duration similar to power frequency.

  • Distance relays need accurate current and voltage for determining the trip ignition. Therefore we must analyze nonlinear phenomena which cause distortion in signals first of all. This paper presents the effect of some distortion(arcing fault and current transformer saturation) in power system. The saturation of a current transformer distorts input current of a distance relay and arcing faults make current and voltage to be changed. This paper describes modeling methods of a current transformer and arcing faults, and describes the simulation result of two distance relay algorithms (discrete fourier transform and modified differential equation methods)

  • Recently, Concerns of imbalance for power supply has been raised by the increase of electric power consumption, but the interest of electric safety is still lacking due to the incompleteness of regulations. Particularly, Arcing fault, direct cause of electric fire accidents, is difficult to detect, interrupt due to unformal signal behaviour in previous research and apply to real system. In this paper, Arcing fault simulator device was fabricated to investigate the characteristics of series arcing fault and simulated the faults in various real load. Also, this study are analysed arcing fault signal by using the harmonic analysis of the acquired data from the current of the power supply and proposed the methods to prevent the series arcing fault accidents in advance.

  • This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for fault discrimination and fault location estimation when occur to arcing ground and arcing line to line on transmission lines. The object of this paper is developed from new numerical algorithm to calculate the fault distance and simultaneously to make a distinction between transient and permanent faults. so the first of object for propose algorithm would be distinguish the permanent from the transient faults. This arcing fault discrimination algorithm is used if calculated value of arc voltage amplitude is greater than product of arc voltage gradient and the length of the arc path, which is equal or greater than the flashover length of a suspension insulator string[1-3]. Also, each algorithm is separated from short distance and long distance. This is difference to with/without capacitance between short to long distance. To test the validity of the proposed algorithms, the results of algorithm testing through various computer simulations are given. The test was simulated in EMTP/ATP simulator under a number of scenarios and calculate of algorithm was used to MATLAB.
