  • Plasma arc cutting is a fusion cutting process in which a gas constricted arc is employed to produce high temperature, high velocity jet at the workpiece. Even though the plasma arc cutting has been wid¬ely used in the industry, very little work has been done on the analysis of the process. In this paper, the kerf width was numerically analyzed by soving the temperature distribution in base metal under consideration of the latent heat effect. In modelling the heat flow problem, the heat intensity of the plasma arc was assumed to have a Gaussion distribution in the transverse direction and expone¬ntially decreasing in the thickness direction. The thermal efficiency and the heat input ratio of the top surface were experimentally deterimned for various thickness and cutting conditions, and used in numerical calculation of the kerf width. The experimental results were in eonsiderabely good agreement with the theoretically predicted kerf width.

  • This paper proposes the idea to enhance the heat transfer in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) by using the azimuthal magnetic field. The azimuthal magnetic field generated by the external currents makes the Lorentz force stronger, and consequently improves the heat transfer by the faster flow movement. The enhanced heat transfer might improve the welding performance by increasing the temperature at the workpiece. To validate the proposed idea, a two-dimensional axi-symmetric model of GTAW is built, and the multiphysics simulation of GTAW is carried out. As the analysis result, the distributions of electric current, electromagnetic fields, arc flow velocity, and temperature are investigated. Then, the proposed idea for heat transfer enhancement is validated by comparing the Lorentz force, flow velocity, and temperature distribution with and without azimuthal magnetic fields.

  • The harsh nature of welding environments makes welding a prime candidate for process automation. Among the variety of welding processes available, gas metal arc welding is one of the most frequently used methods, primarily because it is highly suited to a wide range of applications, and also to automation. Automatic seam tracking method is one of the most demanded techniques for automatic control of arc welding. In this study a seam tracking system has been developed by using the welding arc itself as a sensor. This paper described the principle and experimental result of the arc sensor system, as well as the development and application of the automatic CO_2$ welding for the horizontal fillet welding. A basic problem in horizontal fillet welding is the prevention of hanging bead formation such as undercut at the vertical plate and overlap at the horizontal plate. To produce the symmetric bead shape, the relationship of bead shape to welding parameters(welding velocity, weaving width, weaving speed, tip to workpiece distance) was also investigated.

  • In this study, the material characterization and the dynamic behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials has been studied under transverse central low-velocity impact condition by means of the micromechanical model using finite elements. To build up the micromechanical model considering tow spacing and waviness, an accurate unit structure is stacked in x-y-z direction repeatedly. First, the mechanical properties of 3D orthogonal woven composites arc obtained by means of virtual experiment using full scale Finite Element Analysis based on the DNS concepts, and the computed elastic properties arc validated by comparison to available experimental results. Second, using the implementation of this validated micromechanical model, 3D transient finite-clement analysis is performed considering contact and impact, and the impact behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite is investigated. A comparison study with the homogenized model will be carried out in terms of global and local behaviors.

  • The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the wake(X/d=8) of a circular cylinder with arc grooves. The experiments are conducted by changing the groove number. groove depth, Reynolds number(Re) and the angle of the first formed groove. We know that the optimum groove angle is 70 degree and the wake velocity profiles are improved at a few conditions. According to vortex shedding frequency distributions. the key solutions to vary the flow field behind the circular cylinder are 70 degree groove angle and more deeper grooves than 0.2mm depth.

  • Closed-die forging of the spur gears with circular are fillet has been analyses by using the upper-bound method. A kinematically admissible velocity field has been developed, wherein, the tooth profile consists of the involute curve and the circular arc fillet. In the analysis, the deformation regions have been divided into eight zones. A constant frictional stress has been assumed on the contacting surfaces Utilizing the formulated velocity field, numerical calculations have been carried out to investigate the effects of various parameters, such as module, number of teeth, addendum modification coefficient and friction factor, on the relative forging pressure of spur gears. As the result of numerical calculations, the relative forging pressure does not change so much against the variation of module. On the other hand, the relative forging pressure increases at the final filling stage as the addendum modification coefficient increases.

  • The performance of a spark jet driven by pulsed-arc plasma was investigated experimentally for various energy input. A high-speed jet (about 330 m/s) was obtained by rapid gas heating produced by 37 mJ of deposited energy per pulse. The peak velocity and penetration distance of the jet were proportional to the deposited power and the deposited energy per pulse, respectively. A smaller orifice diameter produces a higher velocity jet at lower energy levels. For the same deposited energy, higher-current pulses produce a higher jet velocity than higher-pulse-width pulses. A total deposited energy of about 10 mJ per pulse with a pulse duration of about $10{\mu}s$ was found to be the optimum for energy- efficient operation.

  • Object of this study is to see whether the arc-groove on a D-shape bluff body effects the drag reduction or not. To this end, the changes of the boundary layer on the surface of the object, the downstream flow field and wake flow were found by experiments. The experiments are conducted by changing number and depth of the groove, angle of the first groove and Reynolds number(Re). Groove did not effect on the surface in the downstream boundary layer of the object and was minimal impact on the time mean velocity recovery of the wake flow. Also the effects of Groove did not have a significant impact on the structure of the wake and the wake frequency. Therefore it is found that the arc-groove of the drag reduction effect on the D-shape bluff body was smaller.

  • Self-blast circuit breakers utilize the energy dissipated by the arc itself to create the required conditions for arc quenching during the current zero. During the arcing period, high pressure, temperature and radiation of the arc could burn in pure SF6 gas and PTFE nozzle. Ablated nozzle shape and $SF_6$-PTFE mixture vapor affect the performance of an self-blast circuit breaker. After a number of tests, nozzle in circuit breaker is disassembled, a section of ablated nozzle is investigated precisely. Using computational fluid dynamics, the conservation equation for the gas and temperature, velocity and electric fields within breaker is solved. Before applying a section model, developed program is verified with experimental data. Performance of ablated nozzle shape is compared with original model through analysis program.

  • Here is represented a vortex panel method to evaluate the performance characteristics of the 2-dimensional turbomachinery with circular arc blades or logarithmic blades. The present method is characterized by distributing small consecutive panels of linearly varing vortex strength satisfying boundary condition at control points and Kutta condition at trailing edge. To confirm the reliability of the present method, experimental result of a 2-D pump impeller of six circular arc blades is compared with the calculated one. As an application of the present method, figures are presented in series showing velocity and pressure distribution between blades.
