  • In this study, we have studied hydration properties and compressive strength of the electric arc furnace reduction slag as a cement admixture. The reduction slag is mainly consisted of 17.1% of f-CaO and rapid curing clinker minerals, 37.1% of $C_{11}A_7CaF_2$, and 21.0% of $C_3A$. When the substitution rate of the slag on OPC was 30%, the initial setting time and final setting time has been shortened from 305 min. and 425 min. to 10min. and 30min. When the substitution rate of the slag on OPC was 7%, the compressive strength of mixed cement mortars has been increased than that of OPC during all period. When the substitution rate of the slag on OPC was over 20%, the compressive strength of mortars has been reduced than that of OPC at initial and final compressive strength. As a result of hydration properties of reduction slag, $C_{11}A_7CaF_2$ transfer to $C_3AH_6$ but as the substitution rate of slag on OPC increases, increased f-CaO and the metastable hydrates $C_4AH_{13}$ increased. Therefore, we should control the substitution rate of the slag on OPC was under 7% in order to use EAF reduction slag as a cement admixture.

  • Most electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) treatment processes to recover zinc from EAFD employ carbon as a reducing agent for the zinc oxide in the EAFD. In the present work, the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon in the present of iron oxide was kinetically studied. The experiments were carried out at temperatures between 1173 K and 1373 K under nitrogen atmosphere using a weight-loss technique. From the experimental results, it was concluded that adding the proper amount of iron oxide to the reactant accelerates the reaction rate of zinc oxide with carbon. This is because iron oxide in the reduction reaction of zinc oxide with carbon promotes the carbon gasification reaction. The spherical shrinking core model for a surface chemical reaction control was found to be useful in describing kinetics of the reaction over the entire temperature range. The reaction has an activation energy of 53 kcal/mol (224 kJ/mol) for ZnO-C reaction system, an activation energy of 42 kcal/mol (175 kJ/mol) for $ZnO-Fe_{2}O_{3}-C$ reaction system, and an activation energy of 44 kcal/mol (184 kJ/mol) for ZnO-mill scale-C reaction system.

  • Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contains compounds, such as oxides and chlorides, including large quantities of Zn, Pb and Fe. An efficient and stable method for the extraction of metal elements from EAFD is the Rotary Kiln Process. This method is used to recover Zn in the form of crude ZnO (approximately 60%) via the addition of a reducing agent (coke, anthracite) and limestone (for basicity control) to EAFD. This process is commonly used in industry as well as in research and development. Currently, this method is used in many Korean commercial plants, producing approximately 150,000 tons of Crude ZnO per year. The majority of Zn is found in crude ZnO (approximately 76%). In addition components such as Pb, Cd, Sn, In, Fe, Cl, and F are present as oxides, chlorides, and alkaline compounds. This elements have an adverse effect on the zinc smelting process. Therefore, a refining process that eliminates these impurities is essential. In this study, we developed a process technology that efficiently separates Zn and Pb from byproducts (mainly chlorides). A bag filter was used to collect Zn and Pb generated during the dry purification process of crude ZnO. Pure components were recovered as metals or metal carbonate.

  • This study investigated the carbonation of concrete brick cured in a CO2 environment for the utilization of CO2 captured in power plants. Concrete brick specimens were produced with electric arc furnace reducing slag (ERS) and electric arc furnace oxidizing slag (EOS), and cured for 3 days in a CO2 chamber with a concentration of 20 % or in a constant temperature and humidity chamber. The weight change, compressive strength, flexural strength and carbonation depth of concrete bricks were measured. From the results, it was found that when subjected to CO2 curing, CO2 was absorbed at the level of 2.4 % of the weight of the specimen. The specimen incorporating ERS showed the highest carbonation depth, and satisfied KS F4004 standards for the concrete brick. Therefore, it is expected that the captured CO2 can be utilized in the CO2 curing process of concrete brick.

  • In this study, the environmental implications of electric arc furnace steel slag, commonly used in road construction and soil reinforcement, were examined. Experiments were conducted to assess the leaching of heavy metals based on particle size and to investigate ion leaching from specimens with varying mixtures of steel slag and clay. The official waste test revealed no detectable heavy metals in the sample items. However, when subjected to leaching experiments and analyzed using ICP-OES, certain heavy metals were found. The reaction of steel slag with water, facilitated by free CaO within the slag, was identified as the cause of leaching. Results showed that aluminum, exhibiting the highest leaching rate, displayed an inverse relationship with particle size. In mixed soil containing steel slag and clay, higher steel slag content resulted in increased aluminum leaching. Nonetheless, the quantity of leached aluminum was notably lower in mixed soil compared to pure steel slag. Furthermore, leaching of other heavy metals remained within acceptable limits. These findings suggest that recycling mixed soil of steel slag and clay for road construction or soil stabilization presents reduced environmental risks compared to using steel slag alone. Utilizing such mixtures could offer an environmentally sustainable and safe alternative.

  • Electric-furnace-slag has the expansion, due to the reaction with water and free Cao. So compared with the blast-furnace-slag, the recycling range of EFS is subject to restriction. But the expansive reaction of EFS is removed, the it is possible to use aggregate for concrete. This study is the basic properties of concrete to used stabilized EFS(oxidized EFS). The EFS is used fine aggregate in concrete, and replaced by sea-sand(natural sand). The replacement ratio are 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%. The result of study, to used oxidized EFS-sand, the flowability and the compressive strength is increased. Also it is possible to reduce the Bleeding. It is necessary more study about using the EFS aggregate, like the durability, the mechanical property for concrete

  • Reduction of Electric Arc Furnace dust with carbon (graphite) was studied at the temperature range of $800^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$ in Ar gas atmosphere. The briquetted dust with graphite powder was heated in a vertical tube furnace for given reaction time and Quenched in Ar gas atmosphere. It was found that initially the reduction of Zn was chemically controlled and the activation energy was about 120 KJ/mole. Because the almost all of Pb was removed with Cl in the form of $PbCl_2$, it is considered that Pb is removed by chloride reduction. Cu was vaporized as a chloride up to 30% of its original content, but the remaining of Cu would be accumulated with the reduced iron. and also, Cd was removed completely within 15 min. at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • This work provides an overview of the steel production process, pretreatment and tramp elements of scraps and recycling technology of dust generated from steelmaking process. Steel is the most common metal used by mankind, with the world production of crude steel in 2018 exceeding 1.8 billion tonnes. Recycling of ferrous scraps reduces CO2 emissions by about 42 % and saves about 60 % of energy, compared to production steel from iron ore. Steel scraps are usually recycled to both an electric arc furnace (EAF), scrap-based steelmaking and the basic oxygen furnace (BOF), in ore-based steelmaking. EAF steelmaking, which uses iron scrap as a main raw material, is changing to an energy-saving type with a device for preheating scrap. Dust generated from the steelmaking process is recycled in various ways in the steel mill to recover iron and zinc.

  • Background: Solar furnaces are used worldwide to conduct experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of solar-chemical processes with the aid of concentrated sunlight, or to qualify high temperature-resistant components. In recent years, high-flux solar simulators (HFSSs) based on short-arc xenon lamps are more frequently used. The emitted spectrum is very similar to natural sunlight but with dangerous portions of ultraviolet light as well. Due to special benefits of solar simulators the increase of construction activity for HFSS can be observed worldwide. Hence, it is quite important to protect employees against serious injuries caused by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in a range of 100 nm to 400 nm. Methods: The UV measurements were made at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Cologne and Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI), Switzerland, during normal operations of the HFSS, with a high-precision UV-A/B radiometer using different experiment setups at different power levels. Thus, the measurement results represent UV emissions which are typical when operating a HFSS. Therefore, the biological effects on people exposed to UVR was investigated systematically to identify the existing hazard potential. Results: It should be noted that the permissible workplace exposure limits for UV emissions significantly exceeded after a few seconds. One critical value was strongly exceeded by a factor of 770. Conclusion: The prevention of emissions must first and foremost be carried out by structural measures. Furthermore, unambiguous protocols have to be defined and compliance must be monitored. For short-term activities in the hazard area, measures for the protection of eyes and skin must be taken.

  • The alloys were prepared by a non-consumable vacuum arc melting and homogenized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. Two kind of surface modifications were performed alkali treatment in 5.0M NaOH solution subsequent and heat treatment in vacuum furnace at $600^{\circ}C$, and were oxidizing treatment at the temperature range of 550 to $750^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. After surface modification, these samples were soaked in SBF which consists of nearly the same ion concentration as human blood plasma. Cytotoxicity tests were performed in MTT assay treated L929 fibroblast cell culture, using indirect methods. A porous and thin activated layer was formed on Titanium and Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy by the alkali treatment. A bone-like hydroxyapatite was nucleated on the activated porous surfaces during the in vitro test. However, Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloys showed better bioactive properties than Titanium. According to XRD results, oxide layers composed of mostly $TiO_2$(rutile) phases. Cytotoxicity test also revealed that moderate oxidation treatment lowers cell toxicity and Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy showed better results compared with Titanium.
