  • The solids and the fluids in porous media have a relative velocity to each other. Due to physically and chemically different material properties and their relative velocity, the behavior of saturated porous media is extremely complicated. Thus, in order to describe and clarify the deformation behavior of saturated porous media, constitutive models for deformation of porous media coupling several effects such as flow of the fluids or thermodynanical change need to be developed in frame of Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) description. The aim of ALE formulations is to maximize the advantages of Lagrangian and Eulerian elements, and to minimize the disadvantages. Therefore, this method is appropriate for the analysis of porous media that are considered for the behavior of the solids and the fluids. In this work, governing equations of porous media based on ALE description are obtained from governing equations in frame of updated Lagrangian description. Then, weak forms of these equations are derived using arbitrary weighting functions.

  • Cone penetration was analyzed by arbitrary Lagangian-Eulerian(ALE) method. In order to simulate full penetration, steady state analyses were performed using ABAQUS/Explicit, which models upward flow of soil layers. In the analysis of homogeneous layer it was found that the paths and the strain of soil particles were consistent with the result of the strain path method and that the ultimate resistance were reasonably evaluated. The cone penetration through different soil layers was also analyzed and that showed the transfer of cone resistance. The steady state ALE analysis could perform full penetration through the layered soils.

  • The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) finite element analysis is applied to the axisymmetric hot extrusion through continuous dies. In order to simulate hot forming problems, an ALE scheme for temperature analysis is proposed. The computed results are compared with experimental results as with those by pure Lagrangian method. In the present study mesh control is accomplished by the use of isoparametric mapping of quadrilaterals.

  • The solution to a liquid sloshing problem is challenge to the field of engineering. This is not only because the dynamic boundary condition at the free surface is nonlinear, but also because the position of the free surface varies with time in a manner not known a priori. Therefore, this nonlinear phenomenon, which is characterized by the oscillation of the unrestrained free surface of the fluid, is a difficult mathematical problem to solve numerically and analytically. In this study, three-dimensional boundary element method(BEM), which is based on the so-called an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) approach for the fluid flow problems with a free surface, was formulated to solve the behavior of the nonlinear free surface motion. An ALE-BEM has the advantage to track the free surface along any prescribed paths by using only one displacement variable, even for a three-dimensional problem. Also, some numerical examples were presented to demonstrate the validity and the applicability of the developed procedure.

Therefore, this method is appropriate for the analysis of porous media which are considered for the behavior of the solids and the fluids. For this reason, mass balance equations for saturated porous media are derived here in ALE description frames. ALE formulations of mass conservation for the solid phase and the fluid phase are expressed. Then, linear momentum balance equation for porous media as multiphase media is expressed.

  • Blast load, an impulsive load with extremely short time duration with very high pressure, is effected by ground and air condition, weight of charge, shape and location of structure. In this study, a blast dynamic analysis for the air-structural integrated model considering dynamic properties of materials and simulation of complex blast wave propagation by Arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian technique is suggested to perform an accurate blast analysis of concrete structures. For the verification of the proposed blast analysis method, which is the air-structure integrated model using ALE technique, the comparison of analysis and experimental results is performed. The verification confirms that the simulation of realistic behavior of RC wall structures is possible using ALE method. Also, the example cases which have been analyzed using this method show that the estimation to the structural failure criterion for blast load failure can be represented by energy absorbtion procedure.

  • An Eulerian-Lagrangian method, so called immersed boundary method, is used for analysing viscous flow around arbitrary bodies, where governing equations are discretized on a regular grid by using a finite volume method. To improve the accuracy of flow near body boundaries, a second-order accurate interpolation scheme is used and a level-set based grid deformation method is presented to construct the adaptive grids around body boundaries. The present scheme is used to simulate steady flow around a semicircular cylinder mounted on the bottom of flow domain and calculated results are validated by results of a body fitted grid method. Finally, present method is applied to a complex flow around multi body and the usefulness is checked by investigating calculated results.

  • A porous medium is composed of solids, fluids, and gas which have different physical and chemical properties. In addition, these constituents have a relative velocity between each other. So far, in order to analyze porous media using finite element method, Lagrangian or Eulerian method has been used. However, the numerical analyses for porous media have a defect that the methods do not describe the movements of constituents. In this paper, numerical analysis for unsaturated porous media was performed in frame of ALE method which has advantages of Lagrangian and Eulerian. Namely, the Lagrangian description was used in solid phase, and the Eulerian description was used in fluid or gas phase in a porous medium Then the relationship between each other was controlled by the convective term in ALE method. Finally, the numerical results of ALE were compared with tile results of Lagrangian analysis.
