늦여름 원문만 굴양식장 입자유기탄소의 일변동 (Daily Variation of Particulate Organic Carbon in Wonmun Bay on the South Coast of Korea in Late Summer)

  • 진해만의 서남단에 위치하고 수하식 굴 양식의 주산지로서 널리 알려진 반폐쇄성 내만해역인 원문만에서 굴의 성장기인 9월에 주요 성장에너지원인 입자유기탄소의 일변동 양상과 농도분포에 영향을 미치는 몇몇 요인을 조사하였다. 1시간 간격으로 측정된 입자유기탄소의 농도는 비교적 짧은 조사기간에도 불구하고 큰 변동을 보였는데 최저 $58{\mu}g/l$에서 최고 $582{\mu}g/l$범위(평균 $272{\mu}g/l$)였고, 유사한 일변동 양상을 보인 Chlorophyll a의 농도는 0.90에서 $7.25{\mu}g/l$(평균 $3.25{\mu}g/l$)범위였다. 또한 낮은 C/N비($3.1{\sim}7.7$)는 만내의 미세조류가 입자유기탄소의 주요 구성요소임을 시사하였다. 조사수역에서 입자유기탄소의 양은 외부로부터의 유입을 거의 기대할 수 없어 비교적 높은 미세조류의 기초생산(평균 $1.97gC/m^2/day$)에 크게 의존하며 양식굴의 배설도 일부분을 차지하였다. 생산된 입자유기탄소의 약 $40\%$ 정도가 분해과정으로 제거되고 간조시 $36\%$에 달하는 입자유기탄소가 만외측으로 흘러나가는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 약 $16\%$의 입자유기탄소는 저질중으로 퇴적되는 것으로 추산되었고 일부는 양식굴과 그외 타가영양생물에 의한 섭이로 소모될 것으로 사료된다.

Species classification of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense and A. catenella based on their paralytic shellfish toxin profiles

  • The annually outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) were caused by toxic dinolagellate A. tamarense and A. catenella in Korea. The purpose of this study were to investigate the distribution of PSP-causative organisms, A. tamarense and A. catenella and their species classification. Sediment (Saemangeum, the south open sea) and water samples (southeastern coast) were sampled to establish clonal isolates in 2003. After isolation and purification, strains were cultured under $17^{\circ}C$, f/2 media, 14:10=L:D cycle. PST analysis and species identification were performed by HPLC-FD method and specific DNA probe, respectively. Thirty-ons strains were isolated from the Saemangeum reclamation, southeastern coast including Jinhae Bay and south open sea. PSTs were detected in all cultured strains. In eight strains from south offshore, major toxin components are GTX5, C1/2 and minors are GTX3/4, dcGTX3, neoSTX. Sixteen strains from south coastal area have GTX1/4, neoSTX, C1/2 as major toxin components and GTX2/3 as minors. Seven strains from the Saemangeum reclamation have GTX5, C1/2 as major toxin components and GTX1/2/3/4 as minors. Thus, among eight south offshore isolates, four A. tamarense have more toxic (38.31~l19.16 fmol.$cell^{-1}$) than A. catenella (3.78~13.13 fmol.$cell^{-1}$). With the previous results of different toxin composition, toxin components and toxin contents, .it is toxin profile that could used to diagnosis of regional toxic population and geographical distribution of both A. tamarense and A. catenella and their toxigenic strains.

Methods for sampling and analysis of marine microalgae in ship ballast tanks: a case study from Tampa Bay, Florida, USA

  • Ballasting and deballasting of shipping vessels in foreign ports have been reported worldwide as a vector of introduction of non-native aquatic plants and animals. Recently, attention has turned to ballast water as a factor in the global increase of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Many species of microalgae, including harmful dinoflagellate species, can remain viable for months in dormant benthic stages (cysts) in ballast sediments. Over a period of four years, we surveyed ballast water and sediment of ships docked in two ports of Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. Sampling conditions encountered while sampling ballast water and sediments were vastly different between vessels. Since no single sample collection protocol could be applied, existing methods for sampling ballast were modified and new methods created to reduce time and labor necessary for the collection of high-quality, qualitative samples. Five methods were refined or developed, including one that allowed for a directed intake of water and sediments. From 63 samples, 1,633 dinoflagellate cysts and cyst-like cells were recovered. A native, cyst-forming, harmful dinoflagellate, Alexandrium balechii (Steidinger) F. J. R. Taylor, was collected, isolated, and cultured from the same vessel six months apart, indicating that ships exchanging ballast water in Tampa Bay have the potential to transport HAB species to other ports with similar ecologies, exposing them to non-native, potentially toxic blooms.

기수재첩, Corbicula Japonica의 인공종묘생산 (Production of Artificial Seedling of the Brackish water Clam, Corbicula jeponica)

  • 기수재첩의 인공 종묘생산 기술개발의 일환으로 산란기 조사, 산란유발, 난 발생 및 유생의 발달 과정을 관찰 한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 기수재첩의 산란기는 7월 하순부터 9월 하순가지이며, 주 산란기는 8월 초순부터 9월 중순으로 나타났다. 산란유발은 자외선 조사 자극과 생식소절개 방법으로는 반응이 전혀 없었다. 3$\textperthousand$ 해수의 온도 자극에서는 8월하순에 90.0%, 9월에 75.0%의 높은 반응률을 보였다. NH$_4$OH용액을 3$\textperthousand$ 해수에 첨가하는 자극은 1/1000∼3/1000 N에서 15∼45%의 반응률을 보였다. 기수재첩의 수정난은 직경 86${\pm}$3 um의 구형이다. 수정난의 발생은 23.0∼24.5$^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 후 4세포기로 되고, 15시간이 지나면 담륜자 유생 (trochophore larvae),수정 후 2일째에는 D상 유생, 9일째에는 각정기로 성장하였다. 수정 16일째에는 성숙 유생으로 성장하여 저서 생활을 시작하였다.

양양 남대천 기수재첩, Corbicuza Japonica의 서식환경과 밀도 (Environmental Factors and Population Density of Brackish Water Clam, Corbicula japonica on Narndae Stream in Yangyang, Gangwon)

  • 기수재첩 (Corbicula japonica)의 서식환경과 서식밀도를 파악하기 위하여 강원도 양양군 남대천 하구를 대상으로 수질, 퇴적물 환경, 입도분석 및 서식밀도와 크기별 출현율 등을 조사하였다. 재첩 서식지의 수온은 -0.2∼26.8$\^{C}$, 염분은 0.50∼3.21$textperthousand$, 용존산소는 5.21∼8.13 ppm이었으며, 영양염류 중 PO$_{4-}$P은 ND∼1.37 ppm, NO$_{2-}$은 0.10∼0.81 ppm으로 나타났다. 퇴적물의 환경에서 COD는 1.53∼2.82 ppm, 황화물은 ND∼0.0012 ppm, 강열감량 (IL)은 0.85∼1.36%로 안정된 값을 보였다. 퇴적물 조성은 대부분 모래 또는 역질모래였으며, 분급도는 0.53∼1.77 $\phi$로 매우 양호하였다. 재첩의 서식밀도는 2∼464 개체/$m^2$로서 하류 50 개체/$m^2$, 중류 50∼400 개체/$m^2$, 상류 10∼200 개체/$m^2$로 다양하였으며, 크기에 따른 출현율은 각장 10 mm 이하가 3.2%, 10∼20 mm가 50.4%, 20∼30 mm가 43.3% 그리고 30 mm 이상이 3.1%로서 10 mm 이상은 전체의 96.8%로 나타났다.

한강상류 고령지 농업지역에서의 강우시 비점오염 유출 특성 (Characteristics of Water Quality by Storm Runoffs from Intensive Highland Agriculture Area in the Upstream of Han River Basin)

  • Turbid storm runoff from intensive highland agriculture area has emerged as the major problem of water quality deterioration in the upstream region of the Han River. High slope of the upland combined with high rate of fertilization and intensive plowing causes high rate of soil erosion, and subsequently high suspended sediment and phosphorus content in the runoff water. The variations of water quality during rain spells were surveyed for two years (2005 and 2006) in the Jawoon Stream that is one of hot spots of intensive horticulture discharging turbid storm runoff. SS and TP showed large increase according to the increase of flow rate, whereas TN and BOD showed less fluctuations. Mean EMCs of SS and TP measured for nine rain events were as high as $207mgSS{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $0.27mgP{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively. The export coefficient of SS and TP per area of cultivated field were calculated as $11,912kgSS{\cdot}yr^{-1}{\cdot}km^{-2}$ and $785kgP{\cdot}yr^{-1}{\cdot}km^{-2}$, repectively, which are significantly higher than reports of other area. It can be concluded that SS and TP in the runoffs were high enough to impose major threat to aquatic habitats, and the highland agriculture should be the main target of water quality management or habitat conservation in the study area.

  • 남조류는 겨울철에 휴면포자의 형태로 퇴적층에서 존재하다가 적합한 환경조건이 되었을 때 다시 영양세포로 전환된다. 이렇게 전환된 영양세포는 성장에 적합한 환경이 되었을 때 대량증식 하게 되어 수체 내에서 우점한다. 이전까지의 국내 대부분의 연구는 수체 내 영양세포의 변동과 환경인자와의 관계 또는 영양세포에 대한 생리생태적 연구부분에 국한되었다. 하지만, 휴면포자에서 영양세포로 진행되는 부분에 대한 연구가 조류 대량증식의 궁극적인 기작이 되므로 휴면포자에 대한 연구는 조류의 생활사를 이해하는 데에도 매우 중요하다. 또한 다른 조류들간의 변동 및 천이의 연구를 위해서도 필수적이다.

Electro-Cleen 선박평형수 처리장치의 실선 설치 및 선상시험 (Installation and Shipboard Tests of the Ballast Water Treatment System Electro-Cleen)

  • 선박평형수를 통한 수중생물의 이동을 막기 위해, IMO에서는 2004년 2월 선박 평형수와 침전물 관리 국제협약을 제정하였다. 이 협약을 위해, 각국은 협약 비준과 법제화를 준비하고 협약의 성능기준을 만족시킬 수 있는 처리장치 개발을 촉진시키고 있다. Electro-$Cleen^{TM}$ 처리장치는 2006년 3월 IMO 기본승인을 받았고, 2008년 10월 최종승인을 받았다. 형식승인은 한국 정부로부터 2008년 12월에 발급되었다. 본 논문은 Electro-$Cleen^{TM}$ 처리장치의 기본 원리, 구성 요소, 실선 설치 및 선상 시험 내용을 검토하였다. 선상 시험은 8300 GT M/V Yokohama와 27,000 DWT M/V Greenwing으로 수행하였다. 이들 선상 시험을 통해 Electro-$Cleen^{TM}$ 처리장치가 IMO 기준을 만족시키며 신조선 및 현존선에 설치하기가 적합함을 확인하였다.

대청호와 하류하천 연속시스템의 2차원 수리·모의 (Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Simulations for a Coinjunctive System of Daecheong Reservoir and Its Downstream)

  • Most of our rivers are fragmented by the presence of at least one large dam. Dams are often the most substantial controller of the flow regimes and aquatic environments of natural river system. The quality of downstream water released from a stratified reservoir is highly dependent on upstream reservoir water quality. Thus, an integrated modeling approach is more efficient, compared to fragmented modeling approach, and necessary to better interpret the impact of dam operation on the down stream water quality. The objectives of this study were to develop an integrated reservoir-river modeling system for Daecheong Reservoir and its downstream using a two-dimensional laterally averaged hydrodynamic and water quality model, and evaluate the model's performance against field measurement data. The integrated model was calibrated and verified using filed data obtained in 2004 and 2006. The model showed satisfactory performance in predicting temporal variations of water stage, temperature, and suspended solid concentration. In addition, the reservoir-river model showed efficient computation time as it took only 3 hours for one year simulation using personal computer (1.88 Ghz, 1.00 GB RAM). The suggested modeling system can be effectively used for assisting integrated management of reservoir and river water quality.

Insights into the Gut Microbiota of Freshwater Shrimp and Its Associations with the Surrounding Microbiota and Environmental Factors

  • The gut microbiota of aquatic animals plays a crucial role in host health through nutrient acquisition and outcompetition of pathogens. In this study, on the basis of the high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons, we examined the bacterial communities in the gut of freshwater shrimp (Macrobrachium nipponense) and in their living environments (sediment and pond water) and analyzed the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on the shrimp gut bacterial communities. High bacterial heterogeneity was observed in the freshwater shrimp gut samples, and the result indicated that both the surrounding bacterial community and water quality factors (particularly dissolved oxygen and temperature) could affect the shrimp gut bacterial community. Despite the observed heterogeneity, 57 genera, constituting 38-99% of the total genera in each of the 40 shrimp gut samples, were identified as the main bacterial population in the gut of M. nipponense. In addition, a high diversity and abundance of lactic acid bacteria (26 genera), which could play significant roles in the digestion process in shrimp, were observed in the shrimp gut samples. Overall, this study provides insights into the gut bacterial communities of freshwater shrimp and basic information for shrimp farming regarding the application of probiotics and disease prevention.
