Ecological risk assessment (ERA) has been used to establish environmental quality standards or evaluate ecological risk in site-specific areas. The scope of ERA was expanded based on regions, and the concept of regional-scale ecological risk assessment was recently introduced in developed countries. In the present study, regional ERA approaches of relative risk model (RRM), contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (CATS) model, and procedure for ecological tired assessment of risks (PETAR) in advanced countries were extensively investigated. Regional ERA was compared with traditional ERA process. Stressors, receptor and response in traditional ERA were replaced with sources of stressors, habitats, and ecological impacts, respectively in regional ERA. This study introduces the concept and assessment process of regional ERA, and provides a wide perspective how the relative ERA could be applied in Korean ecosystem.
We collected ciliates from terrestrial and aquatic habitats in Korea. Morphology was examined based on observations of both living and stained specimens. As a result of the observations, we found 24 previously unrecorded ciliate species to Korea. The morphology of these species are briefly described here: Tracheloraphis dracontoides, Condylostoma arenarium, Aspidisca steini, Australocirrus aspoecki, Sterkiella tricirrata, Stylonychia lemnae, Wallackia bujoreani, Bakuella marina, Anteholosticha sigmoidea, Holosticha pullaster, Urostyla grandis grandis, Chaenea vorax, Enchelys gasterosteus, Phialina salinarum, Mesodinium pulex, Aegyria oliva, Bryometopus pseudochilodon, Pinacocoleps tesselatus, Urozona buetschlii, Colpidium colpoda, Campanella umbellaria, Pseudovorticella difficilis, Zoothamnium parahiketes and Z. plumula. Among these 24 ciliates, S. tricirrata and U. grandis grandis were studied based on both the morphology and the morphogenesis.
The seven hvpotrichs inhabiting the representative aquatic and terrestrial habitats of Ullung Island, Holosticho svlvotlca, Gonostom urn affine, Histriculus co uicola, H. muscomm, SDlonvchio mytilus, Aspidisca ciccadu and Euplotes m uscicolu are discovered for the first time from Ullung Island. Of these, two species of eonostomum affine (Stein, 1859) and fupfotes muscicofc Kahl, 1932 are newly recorded from Korea. The total seven species are listed and two newly recorded species from Korea are redescribed with illustrations.
Oomycetes are widely distributed in various environments, including desert and polar regions. Depending upon different habits and hosts, they have evolved with both saprophytic and pathogenic nutritional modes. Freshwater ecosystem is one of the most important habitats for members of oomycetes. Most studies on oomycete diversity, however, have been biased mostly towards terrestrial phytopathogenic species, rather than aquatic species, although their roles as saprophytes and parasites are essential for freshwater ecosystems. In this study, we isolated oomycete strains from soil sediment, algae, and decaying plant debris in freshwater streams of Korea. The strains were identified based on cultural and morphological characteristics, as well as molecular phylogenetic analyses of ITS rDNA, cox1, and cox2 mtDNA sequences. As a result, we discovered eight oomycete species previously unknown in Korea, namely Phytopythium chamaehyphon, Phytopythium litorale, Phytopythium vexans, Pythium diclinum, Pythium heterothallicum, Pythium inflatum, Pythium intermedium, and Pythium oopapillum. Diversity and ecology of freshwater oomycetes in Korea are poorly understood. This study could contribute to understand their distribution and ecological function in freshwater ecosystem.
Members of this family Sciomyzidae are known as marsh flies and snail-killing flies because most of the known larvae are obligate predators of Mollusca, especially freshwater and terrestrial Gastropoda. Most species are found in the shallow ephemeral aquatic habitats with rich organic substrates, such as the hard-water streams, small ponds and lakes in mountain valleys. To date, a total of 8 marsh fly species in 4 genera have been known in Korea. During a taxonomic survey of the family Sciomyzidae in Korea, the authors have found the genus Ditaeniella Sack, 1939; thus, it was discovered for the first time in Korea. This genus can be distinguished by the other related taxa with hairs over much of the mesopleuri, hairs on the prosternum and one orbital seta. In addition, the nominate species, Ditaeniella grisescens Meigen, 1830 was also firstly recoded in the Korean fauna.
Chironomids are a large group of invertebrates that live in various aquatic habitats. The distribution range of these invertebrates has become varied due to anthropogenic impacts; as such, their distribution can be used as an indicator of environmental health. Adult chironomids are well known in South Korea; however, the larvae have rarely been studied due to difficulties associated with morphological classification. To address this lack of information, we collected larvae from four important rivers in South Korea and summarized their taxonomic morphological characteristics. The antennae, mandible, and mentum were used for larval taxonomic characterization. In this study, we describe the basic morphological features and key pictorial features of 20 species of chironomids, representing 16 genera.
During a field survey of indigenous Korean ciliates, we collected 21 unrecorded species from aquatic (freshwater and brackish water [salinity about 1.0‰] samples) and terrestrial(moss and soil samples) habitats. The morphology of these species was studied based on live observation, protargol, silver carbonate and silver nitrate impregnation, and scanning electron microscope. These species belong to seven classes as follows: 1) class Heterotrichea - Blepharisma seculum; 2) class Spirotrichea - Birojimia terricola, Bistichella variabilis, Deviata bacilliformis, Oxytricha paragranulifera, Parabistichella cf. variabilis, Steinia sphagnicola, Stichotricha aculeata, Stylonychia cf. notophora, and Tetmemena bifaria minima; 3) class Armophorea - Metopus es; 4) class Litostomatea - Acropisthium mutabile, Pseudomonilicaryon japonicum, and Rimaleptus alpinus; 5) class Phyllopharyngea - Podophrya bivacuolata; 6) class Nassophorea - Drepanomonas pauciciliata; and 7) class Oligohymenophorea - Dexiostoma campylum, Frontonia atra, Histiobalantium natans viridis, Opisthonecta minima, and Tetrahymena rostrata. Here, we provide a brief diagnosis and remark for each species.
This study was conducted as a restoration research in a mountain stream of hydrologic cycle system, which is a type of microsites purposely changing vegetation. The status of vegetation in the three experimental sites, water purification site, small dammed pole site, and aquatic plant restoration site, and one control site within the area of the mountain forest stream were investigated in three different periods, namely before sites restoration, year of sites restoration, and year after sites restoration. After one year of restoration, number of vegetation was increased in the small dammed pool and control site respectively. Vegetation coverage ratio of Zizania latifolia was increased at the water purification area. The effects of habitats restoration appeared to be good a year after the restoration of the experimental sites, in terms of families and species composition of the introduced vegetation, and stream flow. Therefore, the results of the study strongly suggest that fairly effective ways to restore and reproduce degrading mountain hydroecological habitats are by way of forming pool sites and small dams in intermittent mountain streams and re-vegetating with selected plants.
There has been debated on the fact that a scour hole produced by the construction of a groyne has environmental benefits such as provision of diverse underwater habitats and shelter for fish in the event of flooding. Therefore researches are focusing on the scour field around the groyne area beyond the existing safety issues. The scour area on aquatic habitats would format many form on groyne conditions so that the analysis of scour area is strongly required. This study conducted the experiments on permeability and installation angle of groyne and suggested the data for groyne selection in environmental point as analyzing scour area. The physical modeling was performed in different permeability (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%) and installation angle of groyne ($60^{\circ},\;90^{\circ},\;120^{\circ}$). As the result of the study, scour area and scour depth at maximum scour condition was revealed for each case and suggested the differences according to experiment conditions.
Distribution status and threatened assessment of endangered species, Pungitius sinensis (Pisces: Gasterosteidae), were investigated from March to October 2015 in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do etc., Korea. During the study period, a total of 854 individual P. sinensis were collected from 21 of 71 sampling stations using skimming nets. P. sinensis appeared in 23 streams during the past 30 years. However, it was only collected in 12 streams. Therefore, its habitats and populations were drastically reduced. The preferred habitat of P. sinensis was pool of the lower stream with lots of aquatic plants. Given these evidences of small occupying areas ($84km^2$) and drastic reduction in its habitats and populations, P. sinensis is considered as an endangered (EN) [B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v)] species based on IUCN Red List categories and criteria.
