On-Line Sliding Mode Controller Design from a Single Closed Loop Test (단일 폐루프 테스트를 통한 온라인 슬라이딩 모드 제어기 설계)

  • The calculation of parameters of a process model is modified to find better sliding mode controller for a process. A design method by Camacho has such problems as chattering and overshoot due to the Taylor the approximation errors for the time delay term of the first order model. In this paper, a new design technique for a sliding mode controller is proposed by introducing the modified Pade approximation considering the weight factor. With the proposed method, the process response can be directly used to estimate the system parameters without any numerical processing.

Modeling of Low Velocity Impact Damage in Laminated Composites (라미네이트 복합재 판의 저속 충격 손상 모델링)

  • In this study a simple model is developed that predicts impact damage in a composite laminate using an analytical model. The model uses a non-linear approximation method (Rayleigh-Ritz) and the large deflection plate theory to predict the number of failed plies and damage area in a quasi-isotropic composite circular plate (axisymmetric problem) due to a point impact load at its centre. It is assumed that the deformation due to a static transverse load is similar to that occurred in a low velocity impact. It is found that the model, despite its simplicity, is in good agreement with FEM predictions and experimental data for the deflection of the composite plate and gives a good estimate of the number of failed plies due to fibre breakage. The predicted damage zone could be used with a fracture mechanics model developed by the second investigator and co-workers to calculate the compression after impact strength of such laminates. This approach could save significant running time when compared to FEM solutions.

  • We obtain the mathematical model of the hard disk drive actuator system the system response data of the finite element analysis or experimental results. The model is base on the Rayleigh-Ritz method to approximate the dynamic response of the actuator system. The basic idea is to use the curve-fit technique to obtain the approximation coefficients. It allows the dynamic analysis of the actuator system without resort to the repetitive finite element modeling work. Even though the dynamic characteristics of the system of the system are affected somewhat by the structural modification and the change of the material properties, we can use the modified size and dynamic properties of the actuator system in the mathematical model to some extent. In this study, we express the mathematical model of the simplified rectangular plate first and then proceed to the actual hard disk drive actuator system.

Approximation of a Warship Passive Sonar Signal Using Taylor Expansion (테일러 전개를 이용한 함정 수동 소나 신호 근사)

  • A passive sonar of warship is composed of several directional or omni-directional sensors. In order to model the acoustic signal received into a warship sonar, the wave propagation modeling is usually required from arbitrary noise source to all sensors equipped to the sonar. However, the full calculation for all sensors is time-consuming and the performance of sonar simulator deteriorates. In this study, we suggest an asymptotic method to estimate the sonar signal arrived to sensors adjacent to the reference sensor, where it is assumed that all information of eigenrays is known. This method is developed using Taylor series for the time delay of eigenray and similar to Fraunhofer and Fresnel approximation for sonar aperture. To validate the proposed method, some numerical experiments are performed for the passive sonar. The approximation when the second-order term is kept is vastly superior. In addition, the error criterion for each approximation is provided with a practical example.

Derivation of Coherent Reflection Coefficient at Mid and Low Frequency for a Rough Surface (불규칙 경계면에 대한 중저주파수 간섭 반사 계수 유도)

  • When we apply a propagation model to the ocean with boundaries, we can calculate reflected wave using reflection coefficient suggested by Rayleigh assuming the boundaries are flat. But boundaries in ocean such as sea surface and sea bottom have an irregular rough surface. To calculate the reflection loss for an irregular boundary, it is needed to compute the coherent reflection coefficient based on an experimental formula or scattering theory. In this article, we derive the coherent reflection coefficients for a fluid-fluid interface using perturbation theory, Kirchhoff approximation and small-slope approximation respectively. Based on each formula, we can calculate coherent reflection coefficients for a rough sea surface or sea bottom, and then compare them to the Rayleigh reflection coefficient to analyze the reflection loss for a random rough surface. In general, the coherent reflection coefficient based on small-slope approximation has a wide valid region. Comparing it with the coherent reflection coefficients derived from the Kirchhoff approximation and perturbation theory, we discuss a valid region of them.

  • In this paper we develop an approximation formalism on the queue length distribution for general queueing models. Our formalism is based on two steps of approximation; the first step is to find a lower bound on the exact formula, and subsequently the Chernoff upper bound technique is applied to this lower bound. We demonstrate that for the M/M/1 model our formula is equivalent to the exact solution. For the D/M/1 queue, we find an extremely tight lower bound below the exact formula. On the other hand, our approach shows a tight upper bound on the exact distribution for both the ND/D/1 and M/D/1 queues. We also consider the $M+{\Sigma}N_jD/D/1$ queue and compare our formula with other formalisms for the $M+{\Sigma}N_jD/D/1$ and M+D/D/1 queues.

A Rigorous 2D Approximation Technique for 3D Waveguide Structures for BPM Calculations

  • We propose a rigorous 2D approximation technique for the 3D waveguide structures; it can minimize the well-known approximation errors of the commonly used effective index method. The main concept of the proposed technique is to compensate for the effective cladding index in the equivalent slab model of the original channel waveguide from the modal effective index calculated by the nonuniform 2D finite difference method. With simulations, we used the proposed technique to calculate the coupling characteristics of a directional coupler by the 2D beam propagation method, and the results were almost exactly the same as the results calculated by the 3D beam propagation method.

  • This paper proposes a correction method for the error inherently created by time-step approximation in finite element analysis (FEA). For a simple RL and RLC linear circuit, the error in time-step analysis is analytically investigated, and a correction method is proposed for a non-linear system as well as a linear one. Then, for a practical inductor model, linear and non-linear time-step analyses are performed and the calculation results are corrected by the proposed methods. The accuracy of the corrected results is confirmed by comparing the electric input and output powers.

  • Retrial queues have been widely used to model the many practical situations arising from telephone systems, telecommunication networks and call centers. An approximation method for a simple Markovian retrial queue by reducing the two dimensional problem to one dimensional problem was presented by Fredericks and Reisner in 1979. The method seems to be a promising approach to approximate the retrial queues with complex structure, but the method has not been attracted a lot of attention for about thirty years. In this paper, we exposit the method in detail and show the usefulness of the method by presenting the recent results for approximating the retrial queues with complex structure such as multi-server retrial queues with phase type distribution of retrial time, impatient customers with general persistent function and/or multiclass customers, etc.

  • For a detailed investigation of the dynamic behaviour of slender bridges under wind action especially the motion-induced fluid forces should be available not only for harmonic motions but also for more general ones. If linear transfer behaviour is assumed, the force-displacement relation for almost arbitrary motions can be handled in the frequency domain using aerodynamic transfer functions. In aerospace engineering as well as in bridge engineering, these functions are usually approximated by special kinds of complex-valued rational functions which depend on complex frequencies. The quality of this approximation is evaluated for several bridge cross sections in this article. It is shown that rational functions are for some sections scarcely suitable to realistically represent the transfer behaviour of motion-induced aerodynamic forces for arbitrarily complex frequencies.
