  • In WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) based surveillance system, it needs to know the occurrence of events or objects and their locations, because the data have no meaning without location information. Using traditional 2D localization mechanisms provide good accuracy where altitude is fixed. But the mapping the position estimated by 2D localization to the real world can cause an error. Even though 3D localization mechanisms provide better accuracy than 2D localization, they need four reference nodes at least and high processing overhead. In our surveillance system, it is needed to estimate the height of the detected object in order to determine if the object is human. In this paper, we propose a height estimation mechanism which does not require many reference nodes and high complexity. Finally, we verify the performance of our proposed mechanism through various experiments.

  • The performance and efficiency of a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell system will improve with the aids of numerical simulations such as finite element analysis. For best simulation results, the virtual model must accurately reflect the actual model including the material properties. It is very difficult, however, to make a detailed numerical model of the stack that consists of hundreds of layers of unit cells composed of various materials like metal, ceramics, polymer, etc. Instead, a practical approach is to find a homogenized material property of the stack as a whole as an approximate replacement. In this paper, the compression ratio of a unit cell is introduced, and a new method is proposed to estimate the homogeneous material properties for both the active and the manifold regions of the stack under the assumption that the compressive deformation occurs only at the separators and matrices in the unit cells. The estimated properties are applied successfully to simulating an actual stack.

  • Rainfall data is the most basic input data to analyze the hydrological phenomena and can be missing due to various reasons. In this research, a neural network based model to estimate missing rainfall data as approximate values was developed for 12 rainfall stations in the Soyang river basin to improve existing methods. This approach using neural network has shown to be useful in many applications to deal with complicated natural phenomena and displayed better results compared to the popular offline estimating methods, such as RDS(Reciprocal Distance Squared) method and AMM(Arithmetic Mean Method). Additionally, we proposed automated data reconciliation systems composed of a neural network learning processer to be capable of real-time reconciliation to transmit reliable hydrological data online.

  • Creep and shrinkage behaviour of an ultra lightweight cement composite (ULCC) up to 450 days was evaluated in comparison with those of a normal weight aggregate concrete (NWAC) and a lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) with similar 28-day compressive strength. The ULCC is characterized by low density < 1500 $kg/m^3$ and high compressive strength about 60 MPa. Autogenous shrinkage increased rapidly in the ULCC at early-age and almost 95% occurred prior to the start of creep test at 28 days. Hence, majority of shrinkage of the ULCC during creep test was drying shrinkage. Total shrinkage of the ULCC during the 450-day creep test was the lowest compared to the NWAC and LWAC. However, corresponding total creep in the ULCC was the highest with high proportion attributed to basic creep (${\geq}$ ~90%) and limited drying creep. The high creep of the ULCC is likely due to its low elastic modulus. Specific creep of the ULCC was similar to that of the NWAC, but more than 80% higher than the LWAC. Creep coefficient of the ULCC was about 47% lower than that of the NWAC but about 18% higher than that of the LWAC. Among five creep models evaluated which tend to over-estimate the creep coefficient of the ULCC, EC2 model gives acceptable prediction within +25% deviations. The EC2 model may be used as a first approximate for the creep of ULCC in the designs of steel-concrete composites or sandwich structures in the absence of other relevant creep data.

  • To model the atmospheric dispersion of radionuclides released from nuclear accident is very important for nuclear emergency. But the uncertainty of model parameters, such as source term and meteorological data, may significantly affect the prediction accuracy. Data assimilation (DA) is usually used to improve the model prediction with the measurements. The paper proposed a parameter bias transformation method combined with Lagrangian puff model to perform DA. The method uses the transformation of coordinates to approximate the effect of parameters bias. The uncertainty of four model parameters is considered in the paper: release rate, wind speed, wind direction and plume height. And particle swarm optimization is used for searching the optimal parameters. Twin experiment and Kincaid experiment are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method can effectively increase the reliability of model prediction and estimate the parameters. It has the advantage of clear concept and simple calculation. It will be useful for improving the result of atmospheric dispersion model at the early stage of nuclear emergency.

  • This study attempts to develop new simplified approximate formulas to predict the fundamental natural periods of vibration (T) for bearing wall systems engaged with special reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSW) under seismic loads. Commonly, seismic codes suggested empirical formulas established by regression analysis of measured T for buildings during earthquake motions. These formulas depend on structure type, building height, number, height and length of SW, and ratio of SW area to base area of structure. In this study, a parametric investigation is performed for T of 110 selected models of bearing RCSW systems with varying structural height, configuration of horizontal plans including building width, number and width of bays, presence of middle corridors and core SWs. For this purpose, a 3D non-linear response time history (TH) analysis is implemented using ETABS v16.2.1. New formulas to estimate T are anticipated and compared with those obtained from formulas of IBC 2012 and ASCE/SEI 7-10. Moreover, the study examines responses of an arbitrarily two selected test model of 60 m and 80 m in height with presence of SWs having middle corridors. It is observed that the performance of the tested buildings is different through arising of considerable errors when using codes' formulas for estimating T. Accordingly, using the present proposed formulas exhibits more reasonable and safer design compared to codes' formulas. The results showed that equitable enhancement is promising to improve T formulas approaching enhanced and accurate estimation of T with reliable analysis, design, and evaluation of bearing RCSW systems.

  • Pedestrian-based camera self-calibration methods are suitable for video surveillance systems since they do not require complex calibration devices or procedures. However, using arbitrary pedestrians as calibration targets may result in poor calibration accuracy due to the unknown height of each pedestrian. To solve this problem in the real surveillance environments, this paper proposes a novel Bayesian approach. By assuming known statistics on the height of pedestrians, we construct a probabilistic model that takes into account uncertainties in both the foot/head locations and the pedestrian heights, using foot-head homology. Since solving the model directly is infeasible, we use variational Bayesian inference, an approximate inference algorithm. Accordingly, this makes it possible to estimate the height of pedestrians and to obtain accurate camera parameters simultaneously. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is robust to noise and provides accurate confidence in the calibration.

  • In order to avoid excessive vibration, it is required to carry out a vibration analysis of heat-exchanger/nuclear-reactor at the design stage. Information of eigen-frequency in the vibration problem is required to evaluate safety of heat-exchange/nuclear reactor. This paper describes a numerical method, Galerkin's method, to solve the eigenvalue problem occurred in a cantilever beam. The beam is restrained with added mass and spring at the free end or a node point of a mode shape. The numerical results of eigen-frequency were compared with simple analytical and experimental results given by simple approach and simple test, respectively. It is found that Galerkin's method is applicable to estimate the eigen-frequency of the cantilever beam. The frequencies become lower with increasing the added mass and the frequencies increase with the spring force. It is shown the heavy added mass has a role of support on the flexible tube. The eigen-frequency of the first mode, for the system with the added mass mounted at the free end, can be calculated by the approximate analytical method existing with more or less accuracy.

  • In this paper, I provided an approximation function Li*2,10(x) using logarithm integral for the counting function π*2,10(x) of consecutive deca primes. Several personal computers and Mathematica were used to validate the approximation function Li*2,10(x). I found the real value of π*2,10(x) and approximate value of Li*2,10(x) for various x ≤ 1011. By the result of theses calculations, most of the error rates are margins of error of 0.005%. Also, I proved that the sum C2,10(∞) of reciprocals of all primes with difference 10 between primes is finite. To find C2,10(∞), I computed the sum C2,10(x) of reciprocals of all consecutive deca primes for various x ≤ 1011 and I estimate that C2,10(∞) probably lies in the range C2,10(∞)=0.4176±2.1×10-3.

  • In this paper, a simple but effective analysis procedure to estimate seismic capacities of multi-span continuous bridge structures is proposed on the basis of modal pushover analysis considering all the dynamic modes of structure. Unlike previous studies, the proposed method eliminates the coupling effects induced from the direct application of modal decomposition by introducing an identical stiffness ratio and an approximate elastic deformed shape. Moreover, in addition to these two introductions, the use of an appropriate distributed load {P} makes it possible to predict the dynamic responses for all kinds of bridge structures through a simpler analysis procedure. Finally, in order to establish the validity and applicability of the proposed method, correlation studies between rigorous nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method are conducted for multi-span continuous bridges.
