The Relation Between the Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment and Walking and Balance Ability in Stroke Patient (뇌졸중 환자에서 기능평가와 보행 및 균형과의 관련성)

  • Purpose : The purposes of this study were to find correlations among Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale, walking velocity, walking asymmetry and balance ability. Methods : The study sample consisted of 50 stroke patients referred to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in the Sanggye Paik, Ilsan Paik, Seoul Paik, and Dobong Hospital. All subjects were ambulatory with or without an assistive device. All participants were assessed on Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale and walking velocity, walking asymmetry. The data were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results : The results revealed that upper extremity coordination, balance and pain items of Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale were significantly correlated with walking velocity and upper extremity and upper extremity motor and balance items of Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale were significantly correlated with walking asymmetry. Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale was not significantly correlated with Static Balance Index, Dynamic Balance Index and Weight Distribution Asymmetry Index. Their power of explanation regarding comfortable walking velocity and comfortable walking asymmetry were 60.3%, 42.5% respectively. Conclusion : These results showed that Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale is significantly correlated with walking velocity, asymmetry and not significantly correlated with balance ability. Therefore Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale is an appropriate assessment tool to predict walking ability of patients with stroke. Futher study about walking velocity and asymmetry by change of Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale is needed using a longitudinal study design.

A Study for validation of the parental satisfaction scale for child care centers (어린이집 이용만족도 척도 타당화 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of the Parental Satisfaction Scale for Child Care Centers, which modified the Client Satisfaction Scale (CSS; Kim, 2009). The subjects of the study were 652 parents of children who were between the ages of one to five and who attended child care centers. The five-point rating scale consisted of 21 items with two sub-dimensions. The results from an exploratory factor analysis identified that there are two dimensions in this scale. Thus, in terms of the face validity of this scale, a two-dimensional scale with 21 items is found to be appropriate. However, the items that consist of the two sub-dimensions are found to be different from that of CSS. The concurrent validity and internal consistency reliability of the revised scale are relatively high. Also, the mean between the upper and lower groups with regard to item discrimination show significant difference. We conclude that the original CSS with minor revisions can be used as a valid and reliable instrument to assess parental satisfaction on child care centers.

  • The aim of this article is to criticize the discourses and practices of the appropriate technology for international development cooperation in Korea which focus narrowly on the technologies and are oriented to the providers of technologies. To present an alternative, we will discuss the appropriate technology by the insights from 'socio-technical system' studies which underline not only technological side but also the social, institutional and user's side, and analyze the interactions between them. This research deals with several cases mainly regarding small scale's renewable energy from Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, Mongolia and Nepal. We put out some suggestions to improve the discourse and practices of appropriate technology in field of international cooperation by Korea.

The Contents Construction for Learning a Region (지성에 대한 학습 내용 구성에 관한 연구)

  • This study begins with the interests of the problems in learning a region under the Korean National Curriculum in geography field and the perceptions on the region which affects students 'formation of regional concept. The purposes of this study are to find problems in learning a region and to construct a new content for learning a region to improve the current problems. This study suggests that it is necessary for student to establish a clear concept on a region in order to effectively learn a region. Therefore, this study reviews how concepts on a region have changed and selects important elements in learning a region by considering a level of students' understanding. The important elements selected in this study are the definition of a region, the formation of a region, and the system of a region. By learning a real region established as a 'region for instruction' of a medium scale, students can reach an appropriate level of meaningful understanding of a region. This study found that an appropriate selection of scale in choosing the extent of a region was critical in success of effective organization of learning contents.

  • A subcritical facility must ensure nuclear criticality safety under all circumstances. For this purpose, it is essential to have a procedure to validate that calculated values do not exceed upper subcritical limit (USL), determined by quantifying the bias and uncertainty. However, there are several validation methodologies of nuclear criticality safety and these can yield different USL. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the validity of the methodologies to establish one methodology that can provide the most appropriate USL. In this study, two documents, a guide for validation of nuclear criticality safety calculational methodology (NUREG/CR-6698) and a criticality benchmark guide for light water reactor fuel in transport and storage package (NUREG/CR-6361), are compared and analyzed. In particular, the methodology in NUREG/CR-6361 is applied to the USLSTATS code. However, the analysis results show that the methodology in NUREG/CR-6698 is more appropriate, for several reasons. This is applied to decision of USL to design casks using SCALE code version 6.1.

Development of a Coping Scale for Emergency Situations with Elementary School Students (학령기 아동의 응급상황에 대한 대처 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an instrument to measure coping in emergency situations. Methods: The process included construction of a conceptual framework, generation 60 primary items, verification of construct validity and extraction of final items. The.60 preliminary items were reviewed for content validity by seven experts and were tested to evaluate inter-item correlation coefficient by three groups of elementary school students. From November 1 to December 10, 2008, data were collected from 920 elementary school students according to residential characters (major city, small town, rural area). Item analysis, factor analysis with rotation Varimax and Cronbach's alpha were used to analyze the data. Results: 1) There were 45 items in the final instrument categorized into 8 factors. 2) The factors were labeled as "Call for help and check" (8 items), "Care for common symptoms" (6 items), "Appropriate response for the situation" (5 items), "Evacuation" (6 items), "Care for tissue damage" (8 items), "Care for injury by heat, cold or foreign body" (6 items), "Offer help" (4 items) and "Rescue & escape" (2 items). 3) Cumulative percent of variance was 53.10% and eigen values ranged from 1.04 to 13.38. 4) Cronbach's alpha for the total was .943 and ranged from .527 to .869. Conclusion: Validity and reliability of the scale are confirmed in this study showing its utility for measuring coping in emergency situations with elementary school students. Utilization of the scale will also contribute to designing appropriate coping education programs for elementary school students.

Development of the Patient Safety Nursing Activities Scale for Clinical Nurses (임상간호사의 환자안전 간호활동 측정도구 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a patient safety nursing activities scale for clinical nurses and to verify validity and reliability it. A preliminary scale was developed through various processes and pilot study. Data were collected from 900 nurses at 28 hospitals selected by proportionate stratified sampling with 331 general hospitals nationwide. The final scale was a 4-point scale, consisting of 72 items in 10 domains. The construct validity was found to be appropriate by exploratory factor analysis and 70.3% of the variance in the total scale and over .74 of factor loading. There was a significant correlation between scale and patient safety culture (r=.52, p<.001) and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was .99. This scale developed to measure patient safety nursing activities of clinical nurses was found to be reliable and valid and will be a useful tool in practical field.

Validity of the Korean Occupational Stress Scale in Occupational Therapists (한국인 직무스트레스 측정도구의 타당도: 작업치료사를 대상으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and the validity of the Korean Occupational Stress Scale(KOSS) in occupational therapists. The data were collected from 214 occupational therapists by using the Korean Occupational Stress Scale. The gathered data were conducted the factor analyses and validation process to ascertain the validity. The results of this study suggested that to estimate occupational stress of occupational therapist, modified version of the KOSS which was consist of eight subscales might be more an appropriate measurement scale than the original version of the KOSS which was composed of seven subscales. Eight subscales of the scale were occupational climate, organizational system, insufficient job control, lack of reward, job demand, interpersonal conflict, job ability and job insecurity, and out of these, job ability was newly added for occupational therapist. Also the results indicated that Cronbach's alpha score of this measurement tool was 0.84, and it means that internal consistency of this scale has good reliability, and the number of questions are also valid. This study has significance to suggest necessary psychometric characteristics of the occupational stress scale for job stress study in occupational therapist.

Behavior of Reduction and Carburization of EAF Dust and Mill Scale (전기로 분진과 압연 Scale의 환원 및 탄화거동)

  • To be recycled iron and heat source in EAF, EAF dust and mill scale generated from steelmaking plant should be made to iron carbide. Behavior of reduction and carburization in EAF dust and mill scale is studied to get fundamental data. EAF dust and mill scale are carburized at $650^{\circ}C$ by 100% CO gas. The carbon content of iron carbide(about 9 wt,% C) is higher than that of cementite without free carbon. The 1.2 times of calculated carbon content is suitable for reduction of EAF dust. The reduction temperature is appropriate to $900^{\circ}C$ in EAF dust and $1000^{\circ}C$ in mill scale. The carburization rate of mill scale are faster than those of EAF dust. The composition of super iron carbide is almost $Fe_2$C.

Correlations Among the Berg Balance Scale, Gait Parameters, and Falling in the Elderly (노인에서 Berg 균형 척도, 보행 변수, 그리고 넘어짐과의 관계)

  • This study examined the correlations among the Berg Balance Scale, which is a clinical tool used to evaluate balance ability, spatiotemporal parameters of gait, and falling; determined the parameters most closely related to falling; and identified a discriminatory parameter and its predictability. Thirty-four subjects aged 72 to 92 years participated in this study. Following a questionnaire survey about falling, the Berg Balance Scale and spatiotemporal parameters of gait were measured. The results revealed that the incidence of falls increased with aging and an accompanying reduction in the flexion range of motion of the hip joint. The gait characteristics of elderly people who fell easily included a slower walking speed, shorter stride, and longer stance time than other elderly. When the cutoff score was set at 45, the Berg Balance Scale was able to identify correctly those individuals who truly have experience of falling than when the cutoff score was set at 39. But when the cutoff score was set at 39, the scale's specificity identifying correctly those individuals who truly have not experience of falling was higher than at the cutoff score of 45. Therefore, the Berg Balance Scale is an appropriate screening method in a clinical setting for the early detection of elderly people at risk of falling. In conclusion, elderly people with a Berg Balance Scale score. below 45 are the most likely to fall owing to their decreased balance ability.
