Steel-concrete composite box girder bridges are widely used in the construction of highway and railway bridges both domestically and abroad due to their advantages of being light weight and having a large spanning ability and very large torsional rigidity. Composite box girder bridges exhibit the effects of shear lag, restrained torsion, distortion and interface bidirectional slip under various loads during operation. As one of the most commonly used calculation tools in bridge engineering analysis, one-dimensional models offer the advantages of high calculation efficiency and strong stability. Currently, research on the one-dimensional model of composite beams mainly focuses on simulating interface longitudinal slip and the shear lag effect. There are relatively few studies on the one-dimensional model which can consider the effects of restrained torsion, distortion and interface transverse slip. Additionally, there are few studies on vehicle-bridge integrated systems where a one-dimensional model is used as a tool that only considers the calculations of natural frequency, mode and moving load conditions to study the dynamic response of composite beams. Some scholars have established a dynamic analysis model of a coupled composite beam bridge-train system, but where the composite beam is only simulated using a Euler beam or Timoshenko beam. As a result, it is impossible to comprehensively consider multiple complex force effects, such as shear lag, restrained torsion, distortion and interface bidirectional slip of composite beams. In this paper, a 27 DOF vehicle rigid body model is used to simulate train operation. A two-node 26 DOF finite beam element with composed box beams considering the effects of shear lag, restrained torsion, distortion and interface bidirectional slip is proposed. The dynamic analysis model of the coupled composite box girder bridge-train system is constructed based on the wheel-rail contact relationship of vertical close-fitting and lateral linear creeping slip. Furthermore, the accuracy of the dynamic analysis model is verified via the measured dynamic response data of a practical composite box girder bridge. Finally, the dynamic analysis model is applied in order to study the influence of various mechanical effects on the dynamic performance of the vehicle-bridge system.

There is a complex variation of stress in PSC anchorage zones and box girder diaphragms because of large concentrated load by prestress. According to the AASHTO LFRD design code, three-dimensional effects due to concentrated jacking loads shall be investigated using three-dimensional analysis procedures or may be approximated by considering separate submodels for two or more planes. In this case, the interaction of the submodels should be considered, and the model loads and results should be consistent. However, box girder diaphragms are 3-dimensional disturbed region which requires a fully three-dimensional model, and two-dimensional models are not satisfactory to model the flow of forces in diaphragms. In this study, the strengths of the prestressed box girder diaphragms are predicted using the 3-dimensional grid strut-tie model approach, which were tested to failure in University of Texas. According to the analysis results, the 3-dimensional strut-tie model approach can be possibly applied to the analysis and design of PSC box girder anchorage zones as a reasonable computer-aided approach with satisfied accuracy.

The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the numerical models and the related input parameters were analyzed to simulate the axial load-movement relations, which were obtained from the compression loading tests for the cylindrical specimens of the steel pipe, the concrete, and the steel-concrete composite. As the results, the behavior of the steel pipe was simulated by the von-Mises model and that of the concrete by the strain-softening model, which decreases cohesion and dilation angles as the function of plastic strains. In addition, the reinforcing bars in the concrete were simulated by applying the yielding moment and decreasing the sectional area of the bars. The applied numerical models properly simulated the yielding behavior and the reinforcement effect of the steel-concrete composite piles. The parametric study for the real-size piles showed that the material strength of the steel-concrete composite pile increased about 10% for the axial loading and about 20~45% for the horizontal loading due to the reinforcement effect by the surrounding steel pipe pile.
Tardive dyskinesia is an involuntary neurological movement disorder caused by long-term use of dopamine receptor-blocking drugs leading to dental implications like uncontrolled gnashing and grinding of teeth which in turn imperil the oral rehabilitation procedures as the excessive load increases the risk of prosthesis fracture. A 40-year male with a medical history of tardive dyskinesia visited the hospital to receive oral rehabilitation for missing maxillary anterior teeth. After the oral examination, tooth preparation was done on teeth 13, 15, and 23. After that silicon impression was made and the gypsum cast was digitalized using a desktop scanner and an interim prosthesis was fabricated by milling a resin block. During the try-in, the occlusal one-third of the interim prosthesis was trimmed, and an auto-polymerizing acrylic resin was applied on the occlusal surfaces and inserted in the patient's mouth. Then, the functionally generated path (FGP) of occluding surfaces of opposing arches was traced on the resin surface. When the resin was hardened, the modified interim prosthesis was removed and digitized using an intraoral scanner. The scan image was used in designing the occlusal morphology of definitive prosthesis by modifying the design of the interim prosthesis using the dual scan method. Lastly, a monolithic zirconia prosthesis was fabricated by milling a zirconia block. The definitive prosthesis was delivered reflecting the patient's occlusal scheme. This case report shows that the FGP technique with the dual scan method can help in fabricating fixed prosthesis with harmonious occlusion in a tardive dyskinesia patient.

This paper conducted a study on the application of ceramic materials for bridge bearing that can complement the durability of PTFE, a conventional bridge bearing friction material, and exhibit low coefficient of friction and friction behavior without lubricant. The ceramic material was zirconia (ZrO2), and the friction behavior was evaluated according to the roughness coefficient. The roughness coefficient was divided into 0.8 and 0.027, and the average coefficient of friction was calculated to be 0.16 under 15 MPa surface pressure. Afterward, ceramic was made into friction material and applied to the bridge bearing, and performance comparison with PTFE bridge bearing was conducted through compression test and friction test. In the compression test, the ceramic and PTFE bridge bearing showed ideal compression behavior depending on the load. No fractures or defects were observed in the ceramic bridg bearing, but lubricant loss was observed in the PTFE bridge bearing. The average coefficient of friction of the ceramic bridge bearing analyzed through friction behavior was 0.16. The inherent material properties of the physical and chemical properties of ceramics, the excellent mechanical properties derived from the performance evaluation, and the coefficient of friction of 0.16 suggest that it can be considered as a friction material.
The rapid advancement of the high-tech electronics industry has led to a significant increase in high-concentration ammonia wastewater. Various methods have been attempted to reliably treat wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonia, but no successful technology has yet been developed and applied. In this study, the removal efficiency and characteristics of ammonia nitrogen was evaluated according to changes in temperature, air loading rate, and liquid loading rate using a closed circulation countercurrent packed tower type demonstration facility for wastewater containing high concentrations of ammonia generated in the high-tech electronics industry. The temperature was varied while maintaining operating conditions of a wastewater flowrate of 20.8 m3 h-1 and an air flow rate of 18,000 Nm3 h-1. The results showed that at temperatures of 45,50,55, and 60℃, the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) were 87.5%, 93.4%, 96.8%, and 98.7%, respectively. It was observed that temperature had the most significant impact on the removal efficiency of NH3-N under these conditions. As the air loading rate increases, the removal rate also increases, but the increase in removal efficiency is not significant because droplets from the absorption tower flow into the stripping tower. Even if the liquid loading rate was changed by ±30%, the removal rate did not change significantly. This does not mean that the removal rate was unaffected, but was believed to be due to the relatively high air load rate. Through demonstration research, it was confirmed that ammonia stripping is a reliable technology that can stably treat high-concentration ammonia wastewater generated in the high-tech electronics industry.
Recently, regulations on greenhouse gas emissions have been strengthened, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been strengthening greenhouse gas regulations with a goal of net 'zero' emissions by 2050. In addition, in the shipbuilding/offshore sector, it is important to reduce operating costs, such as improving propulsion efficiency and lightening structures. In this regard, research is currently being conducted on topology optimization using 3D printed composite materials to satisfy structural lightness and high rigidity. In this study, three topology shapes (hexagonal, square, and triangular) were applied to the interior of a rudder, a ship structure, using 3D printed composite materials. Structural analysis was performed to determine the appropriate shape for the rudder. CFD analysis was performed at 10° intervals from 0° to 30° for each rudder angle under the condition of 8 knots, and the load conditions were set based on the CFD analysis results. As a result of the structural analysis considering the internal topology shape of the rudder, it was confirmed that the triangular, square, and hexagonal topology shapes have excellent performance. The rudder with a square topology shape weighs 78.5% of the rudder with a triangular shape, and the square topology shape is considered to superior in terms of weight reduction.

In this study, we evaluated the seismic performance of a masonry building that was not designed to be earthquake-resistant and attempted to improve the seismic performance by adopting a seismic reinforcement method on the exterior of the building. In addition, the building seismic design standards and commentary(KDS 41 17 00:2019) and existing facility(building) seismic performance evaluation methods were applied to evaluate seismic performance, and a pushover analysis was performed using non-linear static analysis. As the result of this study, it was determined that seismic reinforcement was urgent because the distribution rate of earthquake-resistant design of houses in Korea was low and masonry structures accounted for a large proportion of houses. When reinforcing the steel beam-column+brace frame in a masonry building, the story drift angle was 0.043% in the X direction and 0.047% in the Y direction, indicating that it satisfied the regulations. The gravity load resistance capacity by performance level was judged to be a safe building because it was habitable in both X and Y directions. In conclusion, it is believed that the livability and convenience of the house can be secured by reinforcing the exterior of the building and the seismic performance and behavior of the structure can be clearly predicted.

In this paper, we propose a method for establishing a state-space equation model for the motion analysis of floating structures subjected to wave loads, by applying system-identification techniques. Traditionally, the motion of floating structures has been analyzed in the time domain by integrating the Cummins equation over time, which utilizes a convolution integral term to account for the effects of the retardation function. State-space equation models have been studied as a way to efficiently solve floating-motion equations in the time domain. The proposed approach outlines a procedure to derive the target transfer function for the load-displacement input/output relationship in the frequency domain and subsequently determine the state-space equation that closely approximates it. To obtain the state-space equation, the method employs the N4SID system-identification method and an optimization approach that treats the coefficients of the numerator and denominator polynomials as design variables. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we applied it to the analysis of a single-degree-of-freedom model and the motion of a six-degree-of-freedom barge. Our findings demonstrate that the presented state-space equation model aligns well with the existing analysis results in both the frequency and time domains. Notably, the method ensures computational accuracy in the time-domain analysis while significantly reducing the calculation time.

An automated dynamic structural analysis module stands as a crucial element within a structural integrated mitigation system. This module must deliver prompt real-time responses to enable timely actions, such as evacuation or warnings, in response to the severity posed by the structural system. The finite element method, a widely adopted approximate structural analysis approach globally, owes its popularity in part to its user-friendly nature. However, the computational efficiency and accuracy of results depend on the user-provided finite element mesh, with the number of elements and their quality playing pivotal roles. This paper introduces a computationally efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme that optimally combines the h-method of node movement and the r-method of element division for mesh refinement. Adaptive mesh generation schemes automatically create finite element meshes, and in this case, representative strain values for a given mesh are employed for error estimates. When applied to dynamic problems analyzed in the time domain, meshes need to be modified at each time step, considering a few hundred or thousand steps. The algorithm's specifics are demonstrated through a standard cantilever beam example subjected to a concentrated load at the free end. Additionally, a portal frame example showcases the generation of various robust meshes. These examples illustrate the adaptive algorithm's capability to produce robust meshes, ensuring reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Moreover, the study highlights the potential for the scheme's effective application in complex structural dynamic problems, such as those subjected to seismic or erratic wind loads. It also emphasizes its suitability for general nonlinear analysis problems, establishing the versatility and reliability of the proposed adaptive mesh generation scheme.
