  • This paper presents an analysis of microwave device component. An H-Plane waveguide component with arbitrary shape is analyzed using finite element method(FEM) cooperated with boundary element method(BEM). The finite element method(FEM) is applied to the junction region and the boundary element method(BEM) to the waveguide region. For the application of BEM in the waveguide structure, a ray representation of the waveguide Green's function is used. The proposed technique was applied to the analysis of the waveguide inductive junction to compare the numerical result with the result of the mode matching technique. The comparison showed good agreements between the two results. Transmitted powers were also computed in T-junction waveguides for the various shape of the junction area.

  • Herein, we present effective polygonal finite elements to which the strain-smoothed element (SSE) method is applied. Recently, the SSE method has been developed for conventional triangular and quadrilateral finite elements; furthermore, it has been shown to improve the performance of finite elements. Polygonal elements enable various applications through flexible mesh handling; however, further development is still required to use them more effectively in engineering practice. In this study, piecewise linear shape functions are adopted, the SSE method is applied through the triangulation of polygonal elements, and a smoothed strain field is constructed within the element. The strain-smoothed polygonal elements pass basic tests and show improved convergence behaviors in various numerical problems.

  • A finite element method utilizing the Galerkin form of the weighted residuals procedure was developed to estimate the mechanical behavior for a coated fuel particle (CFP) of a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). Through a weak formulation, finite element equations for multiple layers were set up to calculate the displacements and stresses in a CFP. The finite element method was applied to the stress analyses for three coating layers of a tri-isotropic coated fuel particle (TRISO) of a HTGR. The stresses calculated by the finite element method were in good agreement with those from a previously developed computer code and depicted the typical stress behavior of the coating layers very well. The newly developed finite element method performs a stress analysis for multiple bonded layers in a CFP by changing the material properties at any position in the layers during irradiation.

  • When a body including a crack inside is subjected to the compressive forces, the crack is closed and sliding occurs on the crack surfaces. In this work, a subsurface crack subjected to a static or moving compressive load is analyzed with the finite element method considering friction on the crack surface. The friction on the crack surface is assumed to follow the Coulomb friction law. A numerical method based on the finite element method and iterative method is applied in this work. And the result is compared with the frictional contact of crack by ANSYS using contact 12 element. The numerical results of two methods are compared with the wellknown analytical solutions, and the accuracy of iterative method is checked..

  • Recently developed JES(Joint Element Structure) Method was researched as a more safe and economic method than other under pass construction method and was applied to many construction sites. The joint element connection of JES Method is the most important factor for the to behavior of structure. The connection of JES method is filled with the mortar, and the steel and mortar of connections produce the same behavior as one material. The results of experience and numerical analysis are following: The maximum internal stress of connection is decided by the end of connection. also, The connection of joint element structure method have sufficient internal stress against fatigue.

  • A 3-dimensional helical rod finite element is devloped for the dynamic analysis of cylindrical springs. Element matrices are formulated using the Galerkin's method, and an exact static deflection curve is used as a shape function. Because the resultant mass and stiffness matrices of the model are symmetric, effective direct solution method can easily be applied for analysing dynamic behavior of springs. The model is used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of a typical automotive valve spring. The effectiveness of the developed helical rod element is verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of a classical theory and experiments. The helical element developed in this study is superior to a straight beam element and a 2-dimensional curved beam element for this problem.

  • In this study, a complete analysis of soil-structure interaction problems is presented which includes a modelling of the near surrounding of the building (near-field) and a special description of the wave propagation process in larger distances (far-field). In order to reduce the computational effort which can be very high for time domain analysis of wave propagation problems, a special approach based on similarity transformation of the infinite domain on the near-field/far-field interface is applied for the wave radiation of the far-field. The near-field is discretised with standard Finite Elements, which also allows to introduce non-linear material behaviour. In this paper, a new approach to calculate the involved convolution integrals is presented. This approximation in time leads to a dramatically reduced computational effort for long simulation times, while the accuracy of the method is not affected. Finally, some benchmark examples are presented, which are compared to a coupled Finite Element/Boundary Element approach. The results are in excellent agreement with those of the coupled Finite Element/Boundary Element procedure, while the accuracy is not reduced. Furthermore, the presented approach is easy to incorporate in any Finite Element code, so the practical relevance is high.

  • In this work, a stabilized characteristic finite volume method for the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations is investigated based on the lowest equal-order finite element pair. The temporal differentiation and advection term are dealt with by characteristic scheme. Stability of the numerical solution is derived under some regularity assumptions. Optimal error estimates of the velocity and pressure are obtained by using the relationship between the finite volume and finite element methods.

  • In this paper we present an a posteriori error estimator for the stabilized P1 nonconforming finite element method of the linear elasticity problem based on a nonsymmetric H(div)-conforming approximation of the stress tensor in the first-order Raviart-Thomas space. By combining the equilibrated residual method and the hypercircle method, it is shown that the error estimator gives a fully computable upper bound on the actual error. Numerical results are provided to confirm the theory and illustrate the effectiveness of our error estimator.

  • In this study, various available meshless methods are briefly reviewed and the connection among them is investigated. The objective of meshless methods is to eliminate some difficulties which are originated from reliance on a mesh by constructing the approximation entirely in terms of nodes. Especially, focusing on Element Free Galerkin Method(EFGM) based on moving least square interpolants(MLSI), a new implementation is developed based on a variational principle with penalty function method were used to enforce the essential boundary condition. In addition, the weighted orthogonal basis functions are constructed to overcome disadvantage of MLSI.
