Today, vast attention has been paid to periodic arrays of nanostructures due to their potential for applications such as memory with huge storage density. Such application requires large-scale fabrication of well ordered nano-sized structures. One of the most widely used methods for the ordered nanostructures is lithography. This top-down process, however, has the limit to reduce size. Here the promising alternative is the self-organization of ordered nano-sized structures such as large scale 2d carbon-induced reconstructions on W(110). In the present study, we report on the first well-resolved atomic resolution STM studies of the well-known R($15{\times}3$) and R($15{\times}12$) carbon induced reconstruction of the W(110). From the atomic image of R($15{\times}3$) for different values of tunneling gap resistance, we can tell there are no missing atoms in unit cells of R($15{\times}3$) and some atomic displacements are substantial from the clean W(110), even though not all the imaged position of atoms correspond to tungsten, but may include those of carbon. We are considering two cases; First case is related to lattice deformation, or top layer of W(110) is deformed in the process of relief of strain caused by random inserting of carbon atoms possibly in the interstitial position. In the second case, R($15{\times}3$) unit cell results from a coincidence lattice between clean W(110) substrate and tungsten carbide overlayer which has rectangular atomic arrangement and giving R($15{\times}3$) coincidence lattice. beta-W2C showing rectangular unit cell should be a candidate. Further, we report on new reconstructions. Unlike the well-known R($15{\times}12$) consisting of two parts, two inner structures between two "Backbone" structures. The new reconstruction, which we found for the first time, contains more parts between the "Backbone"s. Sometimes we can observe the reconstruction consists of only inner parts without "Backbone" parts. Thus, the observed reconstruction can be built by constructing of two types of "Lego"-like block. Moreover, the rectangle shape of "Backbone" transform to parallelogram-like shape over time, the so-called wavy-R($15{\times}12$). Adsorption of hydrogen can be the reason for this transformation.
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) which is utilized in thin film refractometry-based sensors has been concerned on measurement of physical, chemical and biological quantities because of its high sensitivity and label-free feature. In this paper, an application of SPR to detection of alcohol content in wine and liquor was investigated. The result showed that SPR sensor had high potential to evaluate alcohol content. Nevertheless, food industry may need SPR sensor with higher sensitivity. Herein, we introduced a nano-technique into fabrication of SPR chip to enhance SPR sensitivity. Using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method, gold film with nano-structured surface was devised. In order to make a new SPR chip, firstly, a single layer of nano-scaled silica particles adhered to plain surface of gold film. Thereafter, gold was deposited on the template by an e-beam evaporator. Finally, the nano-structured surface with basin-like shape was obtained after removing the silica particles by sonication. In this study, two types of silica particles, or 130 nm and 300 nm, were used as template beads and sensitivity of the new SPR chip was tested with ethanol solution, respectively. Applying the new developed SPR sensor to a model food of alcoholic beverage, the sensitivity showed improvement of 95% over the conventional one.
The cinema of Peter Greenaway has consistently engaged questions of the relationship between the arts and particularly the relations of image and writing to cinema. When different types of images are correlated and merged with each other on the borders of painting, photography, film, video and computer animation, the interrelationships of the distinct elements cause a shift in the notion of the whole image. This analysis proposes to articulate the complex relationship between the 'interartial' dimension and the 'intermedial' dimension in Peter Greenaway's film, (1991). If the interartiality is interested in the interaction between various arts, including the transition from one to another, the intermediality articulates the same type of relationship between two or more media. The interactional relationship is the same on both sides; on the contrary, the relationship between art and media does not show the same symmetry. All art is based on one or more media - the media is a condition existence of art - but no art can't be reduced to the status of media. This suggests that if the interartiality always involves the intermediality, this proposal may not be reversed. First, we analyse a self-conscious investigation into digital art and technology. Prosospero's Books can be read as a daring visual essay that self-consciously investigates the technical and philosophical functions of letters, books, images, animated paintings, digital arts, and the other magical illusions, which have been modern or will be post-modern media to represent the world. Greenaway uses both conventional film techniques and the resources of high-definition television to layer image upon image, superimposing a second or third frame within his frame. Greenaway uses the frame-within-frame as the cinematic equivalent of Shakespeare's paly-within-play : it offer him the possibility to analyse the work of art/artist/spectator relationship. Secondly, we analyse the relationship between the written word, oral word and the books. Like the written word, the oral word changes into a visual image: The linguistic richness and nuances of Shakeaspeare's characters turn into the powerful and authoritative, but monotone, voices of Gielgud-Prospero, who speaks the Shakespearean lines aloud, shaping the characters so powerfully through his worlds that they are conjured before us. Specially each book is placed over the frame of the play's action, only partially covering the image, so that it gives virtually every frame at least two space-time orientations. Thirdly, we try to show how Peter Greenaway uses pictorial references in order to illustrate the context of the Renaissance as well as pictorial techniques and language in order to question the nature of artistic representation. For exemple, The storm is visualised through reference to Botticelli's : the storm of papers swirling around the library is constructed to look like a facsimili copy of Michelangelo's Laurentiana Library in Florence. Greenaway's modern mannerism consists in imposing his own aesthetic vision and his questioning of art beyond the play's meta-theatricality: in other words, Shakespeare''s text has been adapted without being betrayed.
Surface permeability and shallow geological structures play significant roles in shaping the groundwater recharge of shallow aquifers. Surface permeability can be characterized by two concepts, intrinsic permeability and hydraulic conductivity, with the latter obtained from previous near-surface geological investigations. Here we propose a hydraulic equation via the cross-correlation analysis of the rainfall-groundwater levels using a regression equation that is based on the cross-correlation between the grain size distribution curve for unconsolidated sediments and the rainfall-groundwater levels measured in the Gyeongju area, Korea, and discuss its application by comparing these results to field-based aquifer test results. The maximum cross-correlation equation between the hydraulic conductivity derived from Zunker's observation equation in a sandy alluvial aquifer and the rainfall-groundwater levels increases as a natural logarithmic function with high correlation coefficients (0.95). A 2.83% difference between the field-based aquifer test and root mean square error is observed when this regression equation is applied to the other observation wells. Therefore, rainfall-groundwater level monitoring data as well as aquifer test are very useful in estimating hydraulic conductivity.
Wireless smart sensor networks (WSSNs) have been proposed by a number of researchers to evaluate the current condition of civil infrastructure, offering improved understanding of dynamic response through dense instrumentation. As focus moves from laboratory testing to full-scale implementation, the need for multi-hop communication to address issues associated with the large size of civil infrastructure and their limited radio power has become apparent. Multi-hop communication protocols allow sensors to cooperate to reliably deliver data between nodes outside of direct communication range. However, application specific requirements, such as high sampling rates, vast amounts of data to be collected, precise internodal synchronization, and reliable communication, are quite challenging to achieve with generic multi-hop communication protocols. This paper proposes two complementary reliable multi-hop communication solutions for monitoring of civil infrastructure. In the first approach, termed herein General Purpose Multi-hop (GPMH), the wide variety of communication patterns involved in structural health monitoring, particularly in decentralized implementations, are acknowledged to develop a flexible and adaptable any-to-any communication protocol. In the second approach, termed herein Single-Sink Multi-hop (SSMH), an efficient many-to-one protocol utilizing all available RF channels is designed to minimize the time required to collect the large amounts of data generated by dense arrays of sensor nodes. Both protocols adopt the Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, which provides any-to-any routing and multi-cast capability, and supports a broad range of communication patterns. The proposed implementations refine the routing metric by considering the stability of links, exclude functionality unnecessary in mostly-static WSSNs, and integrate a reliable communication layer with the AODV protocol. These customizations have resulted in robust realizations of multi-hop reliable communication that meet the demands of structural health monitoring.

As GeoWeb 2.0 technologies are widely used, various kinds of services that mashup spatial data and user data are being developed. In particular, various spatial information platforms such as Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Daum Map, Naver Map, olleh Map, and VWorld based on GeoWeb 2.0 technologies support mashup service. The mashup service which is supported through the Open APIs of the platforms, provides various kinds of spatial data such as 2D map, 3D map, and aerial image. Also, application fields using the mashup service are greatly expanded. Recently, as user data for mashup have been greatly increased, there was a problem in mashup performance. However, the research on the mashup performance improvement is currently insufficient, even the research on the mashup performance comparison of various platforms has not been performed. In this paper, we perform comparative analysis of the mashup performance for large amounts of user data and spatial data using various spatial information platforms available in Korea. Specifically, we propose two performance analysis indexes of mashup time and user interaction time in order to analyze the mashup performance efficiently. Also, we implement a system for the performance analysis. Finally, from the performance analysis result, we propose a spatial information platform that can be efficiently applied to cases when user data increases greatly and user interaction occurs frequently.
In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved outstanding performance in the fields of computer vision such as image classification, object detection, visual quality enhancement, etc. However, as huge amount of computation and memory are required in CNN models, there is a limitation in the application of CNN to low-power environments such as mobile or IoT devices. Therefore, the need for neural network compression to reduce the model size while keeping the task performance as much as possible has been emerging. In this paper, we propose a method to compress CNN models by combining matrix decomposition methods of LR (Low-Rank) approximation and CP (Canonical Polyadic) decomposition. Unlike conventional methods that apply one matrix decomposition method to CNN models, we selectively apply two decomposition methods depending on the layer types of CNN to enhance the compression performance. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we use the models for image classification such as VGG-16, RestNet50 and MobileNetV2 models. The experimental results show that the proposed method gives improved classification performance at the same range of 1.5 to 12.1 times compression ratio than the existing method that applies only the LR approximation.
3D porous carbon electrodes (cNPIM), prepared by solution casting of a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) followed by nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) and carbonization are presented. In order to effectively control the pore size of 3D porous carbon structures, cNPIM was prepared by varying the THF ratio of mixed solvents. The SEM analysis revealed that cNPIMs have a unique 3D macroporous structure having a gradient pore structure, which is expected to grant a smooth and easy ion transfer capability as an electrode material. In addition, the cNPIMs presented a very large specific surface area ($2,101.1m^2/g$) with a narrow micropore size distribution (0.75 nm). Consequently, the cNPIM exhibits a high specific capacitance (304.8 F/g) and superior rate capability of 77% in an aqueous electrolyte. We believe that our approach can provide a variety of new 3D porous carbon materials for the application to an electrochemical energy storage.
In the electric arc furnace process, the chemical energy such as the heat of oxidation reaction and the heat of carbon combustion etc. is consumed as 30% of the total input energy. In order to reduce $CO_2$ emission in EAF, it is necessary to decrease the use of electric power energy during scrap melting stage and increase the use of chemical energy. In general, when the carbon materials is individually charged into the molten steel, the carbon materials floated to the slag layer due to low density before it is dissolved in molten steel. When the concentration of carbon in the molten steel is high, the combustion energy of carbon by oxygen injection can lower the electric power energy and improve the chemical energy consumption. Therefore, an efficient charging methods of carbon material is required to increase the efficiency of carbon combustion heat. On the other hand, Al-dross, which is known as a by-product after Al smelting, includes over 25 mass% of metallic Al, and the oxidation heats of Al is lager than that of carbon. However, the recycling ratio fo Al-dross was very low and is almost landfilled. In order to effectively utilize the heats of oxidation of Al in Al-dross, it is necessary to study the application of Al-dross in the steel process. In this study, the dissolution efficiency of carbon and aluminum in molten steel was investigated by varying the reaction temperature and the mixing ratios of coke and Al-dross.
The adhesive strength can be improved through surface treatment. The most common method is to improve physical bonding by varying the surface conditions. This study presents the effect of laser surface treatment on the adhesive strength of CFRP. The surface roughness was patterned using a 1064 nm laser. The effects of the number of laser shots and the direction and length of the pattern on the adhesion of the CFRP/CFRP single joint were investigated through tensile tests. Tests according to ASTM D5868 were performed, and the bonding mechanism was determined by analyzing the damaged surface after a fracture. The optimized number of the laser shots and the optimized depth of the roughness should be required to increase the bonding strength on the CFRP surface. When considering the shear stress in the tensile direction, the roughness pattern in the direction of 45° that increases the length of the fracture path in the adhesive layer resulted in an increase of the adhesive strength. The surface treatment of the bonding surface using a laser is a suitable method to acquire a mechanical bonding mechanism and improve the bonding strength of the CFRP bonding joint. The study on the optimized laser process parameters is required for utilizing the benefits of laser surface processing.
