The purpose of this review was to investigate the neurophysiological and neuroimaging characteristics of patients with depression and anxiety reported in previous studies. A literature search was conducted using Medline and psychiatric textbooks. "Electroencephalography (EEG)", "Event Related Potentials (ERP)", "functional neuroimaging", "heart rate variability (HRV)" and "depression or anxiety" were used as key words. A physiological finding indicated that there was a higher degree of relativity with regards to prefrontal dysfunction in patients with depression. Right prefrontal lobe hyperactivity and left prefrontal hypoactivity were consistently observed, and abnormalities were observed in other regions (ACC, hippocampus, amygdala, etc.). Therefore, dysfunctions in these areas are related to depressive symptoms. In patients with anxiety disorder, each emotional condition showed specific activation patterns in different brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, hippocampus, and limbic system, including the amygdala. However, in the majority of patients with anxiety disorder, the degree of activation was higher in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere. The current data supports that there is a difference in brain dysfunction characteristics between depression and anxiety and that the different activations of various brain regions would play a significant role in the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety disorder.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of multidimensional five senses treatment on patients with depression or anxiety. Results: Our results showed that multidimensional five senses treatment improved the depressive symptoms or anxiety symptoms. In addition, after the multidimensional five senses treatment, PAS score in patients with panic disorder was improved. Conclusions: The multidimensional five senses treatment was effective for the improvement of patients with depression or anxiety.
Purpose: The study determined the effects of a brain respiration program on reducing the test anxiety and depression of nursing students. Method: This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Subjects (n=126) were divided into an experimental group (n=64) that received the brain respiration program two times a week for 8 weeks, and control group (n=62), Data was analyzed using paired t-test and, Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: There was no significant group difference in decreased test anxiety between the two groups (t=1.726. p=.087), but the experimental group displayed a significant decrease in depression (t=2.882, p=.005). Test anxiety and depression was significantly difference by the group (F=5.449, p=021; F=21.008, p=<.001). Significant positive correlations were revealed between worry, and emotional and cognitive factors in test anxiety. Conclusions: Use of a brain respiration program can reduce test anxiety and depression in nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to probe the effect of foot reflexology education program on nursing students with constipation, anxiety and depression. This study was a quasi-experimental study of pre-test and posttest design on non-equivalent control group. Method: The data of this study were collected from October 28, to December 14, 2002. The subjects consisted of 61 nursing students (experimental group: 31, control group: 30) with constipation, anxiety and depression. 31 out of them were devided into the experimental group and received foot reflexology education program that was authorized by the World Foot Reflexology Association and made to suit for the subjects by the author for 6weeks composed of 2 weeks theory and of 4 weeks practical skill on the program. The effect of the program was measured by Bowel Function Assessment Form for constipation, State Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory. Data were analyzed by t-test, $x^2$-test, Repeated measures ANOVA, Bonferroni multiple comparison using SAS/PC 8.12 program. Result: After all session of treatment, the score of bowel function assessment were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Outcomes of 6 and 7 weeks were significantly different from those of pre-experiment. After all session of treatment, anxiety states were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Outcomes of 7 weeks were significantly different from those of pre-experiment. After all session of treatment, depression states were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Outcomes of 6 and 7 weeks were significantly different from those of pre- experiment. Conclusion: The results are suggested that the foot reflexology education program might improve the bowel function, anxiety and depression for the nursing students with constipation, anxiety and depression.
This study was to verify the effectiveness of the Life Review-Narrative group therapy program on decreasing depression and death anxiety in the elderly. The program was organized according to a course of life from childhood to old age. The objectives were for the elderly to enhance self-worth, to become aware of their solitary existence, to accept aging and death, to accept the life: both past and present, and to make the most of experiences in overcoming difficulties. For the most part, the program used reminiscence and re-authoring of the narrative therapy as counseling techniques. Thirty-two elderly people(16 in the experimental group, 16 in the control group) aged 60 years and over were randomly selected from patients at the Daegu Metropolitan City General Welfare Center. Two groups were identified as equivalents for the study in the pre-test. The program for the experimental group was implemented twice a week for 90 minutes per session over a 6-week period(Sep. 8-Oct.14. 2005). The pre-test(Sep. 8 2005), the post-test(Oct. 14. 2005) and the follow-up test(Nov. 14. 2005) were implemented in order to verify the effectiveness of the programs. The instruments used in the study were the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form(Korean Version) and the Death Anxiety Scale. The data were analyzed using t-testing and One-Factor Repeated Measures ANOVA. This study supplemented other qualitative research methods in order to verify the variation in the depression and death anxiety in the elderly. The findings of the study were as follows: Significant decrease in the depression and death anxiety were reported in the experimental group. The control group however did not show any significant changes in the depression and death anxiety rates. The result of the post hoc multiple comparisons showed that the effects of the life review-narrative group therapy program has lasted effects on decreasing of the death anxiety. Nevertheless, the effects of the life review-narrative group therapy program on decreasing depression are not lasting. The study has limitations so further research is suggested.
Objectives: Most patients who have cancer suffer from anxiety and depression. Because most liver cancer patients have cirrhosis, medication can aggravate their liver function. We need the most effective treatment such that the anxiety and depression can be improved without causing deterioration of liver function. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of acupuncture on the anxiety and depression of liver cancer patients. Methods: 8 liver cancer patients who complained of distress were treated by acupuncture three times a week for four weeks (12 times in total). Evaluation of the anxiety, depression and insomnia was measured by NCC (National Cancer Center) score. On visits 1, 4, 7, 10, and 13 we had patients check NCC score after acupuncture treatment. To check deterioration of liver cancer, we checked their abdominal CT, Child-Pugh score and blood test. Results: After 12 treatments, NCC of the anxiety, depression and insomnia were significantly decreased in all of the patients without causing deterioration of liver function. In particular, symptoms were almost completely improved in 6 patients. Conclusions: This study suggests that acupuncture treatment will be beneficial for liver cancer patients to reduce anxiety, depression and insomnia. For liver cancer patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis, a large-scale study to confirm efficacy and safety of acupuncture is needed.
Objective : This study aimed to evaluate the association of exhaustion, ADHD, self-esteem, impulsivity, suicidal tendencies and quality of life as well as depression and anxiety in fire officers in Korea. Methods : This study was undertaken for the first time in Korea, from September 2016 to December 2016. A set of questionnaires was provided to a total of 113 fire officers and 284 other participants as a comparison group. All subjects were evaluated using the Beck's Depression Inventory, Beck's Anxiety Inventory, Malach Burnout Inventory, Korean Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Scales, Rosenberg's Self-esteem Inventory, Baratt's Impulsivity Scale, Beck's Scale of Suicide Ideation, and Quality of Life Scale. Furthermore, the odds ratio of depression, anxiety, exhaustion, ADHD, self-esteem, impulsivity, suicidal tendency and quality of life were evaluated the fire officer group and control group were compared through logistic regression analysis. Result : The results of this study indicated that the fire officers were more likely to show depression, anxiety, exhaustion, ADHD, low self-esteem and higher impulsivity. Also, the association between the fire officer group and depression, ADHD and impulsivity was confirmed through logistic regression analysis. Conclusion : Timely and effective evaluation and treatment of impulsivity, as well as depression is required for fire officers.
The purpose of this study was to examine the difference between the depression and anxiety related with maternal attachment security and those with self-esteem. The study subjects were 240 children's mothers from seven Community Social Welfare Service Centers in Seoul, Incheon, and Pyeongtaek, including those from 1st graders to 6th graders of 2 elementary schools in Seoul. Consequently, a total of 200 mothers were selected for this study. The data in this study were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program by frequency analysis, technical statistics analysis, Cronbach's $\alpha$, Pearson's correlations, partial correlation analysis, and two-way ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Paternal attachment security and maternal attachment security indicated a moderate level of negative correlation with depression and anxiety. Self-esteem showed a high level of negative correlation with depression and anxiety. For self-esteem, we divided the subjects into two groups of high and low self-esteem. In the former, anxiety was significantly negatively correlated with paternal attachment security and depression was not significantly correlated with maternal attachment security and paternal attachment security. In the low group, neither depression nor anxiety showed meaningful correlation with paternal attachment security and maternal attachment security. (2) Married women's depression and anxiety had a main effect both in paternal attachment security and self-esteem level, and in maternal attachment security and self-esteem level. However they had no interactive effect in paternal attachment security and self-esteem level, and in maternal attachment security and self-esteem level.

Background: Breast cancer is one of the most feared diseases among women and it could induce the development of psychological disorders like anxiety and depression. An assessment was here performed of the status and to determine contributory factors. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among breast cancer patients at University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (UKMMC), Kuala Lumpur. A total of 205 patients who were diagnosed between 2007 until 2010 were interviewed using the questionnaires of Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS). The associated factors investigated concerned socio-demographics, socio economic background and the cancer status. Descriptive analysis, chi-squared tests and logistic regression were used for the statistical test analysis. Results: The prevalence of anxiety was 31.7% (n=65) and of depression was 22.0% (n=45) among the breast cancer patients. Age group (p= 0.032), monthly income (p=0.015) and number of visits per month (p=0.007) were significantly associated with anxiety. For depression, marital status (p=0.012), accompanying person (p=0.041), financial support (p-0.007) and felt burden (p=0.038) were significantly associated. In binary logistic regression, those in the younger age group were low monthly income were 2 times more likely to be associated with anxiety. Having less financial support and being single were 3 and 4 times more likely to be associated with depression. Conclusions: In management of breast cancer patients, more care or support should be given to the young and low socio economic status as they are at high risk of anxiety and depression.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand how disease activity and uncertainty influence anxiety and depression in patients with ankylosing spondylitis Methods: Participants were 125 patients with ankylosing spondylitis who had attended the rheumatology division of a university hospital. A structured questionnaire was used to assess disease activity, uncertainty, anxiety, and depression. The data gathered were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVAs, Pearson correlation coefficients, and a multiple regression. Results: Differences were observed in anxiety based on job status, and in depression based on age, marriage, and job status. Uncertainty and disease activity predicted patients' anxiety and explained 40% of the variance in this measure, and the relative influence of uncertainty (${\beta}=.38$, p<.001) was larger than that of disease activity (${\beta}=.30$, p<.001). Furthermore, uncertainty and disease activity predicted depression and explained 36% of the variance therein, and the relative influence of uncertainty (${\beta}=.27$, p=.002) and disease activity (${\beta}=.27$, p=.003) was similar. Conclusion: This study confirmed that disease activity and uncertainty influenced anxiety and depression in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Therefore, efforts to decrease anxiety and depression in patients with this condition must take into consideration disease activity when implementing nursing interventions and should include strategies to lower uncertainty.
