This study was done in order to help alleviate or prevent the anxiety resulting from cardiac catheterization among adult patients. This goal may be re-ached through providing relaxation techenique to the patients. Such an informativeness would make it possible to establish a basis for comprehensive nursing intervention. The results of this study are summarized as fellows: 1. The first hypothesis:“The experimental group with relaxation informativeness will have less score of state anxiety level before cardiac catheterization than the control group without relaxation informativeness”was accepted. (t=3.72, p=.001). 2. The second hypothesis: “The experimental group with relaxation technique informativeness will have less score of distress level during the procedure than the control group without relaxation technique informativeness”was accepted. (t=2.36, p=.023) 3. Additional analysis; It is seen that most cardiac patients were satisfied with precardiac catheterization procedure information provided by medical teams. (experimental group: 90%, control group: 85%) The relaxation technique informativeness contributed to the decrease of anxiety level. Patients showed interest in reusing the relaxation technique informativeness in the event of further need. In conclusion, the researcher thinks that it is necessary that nurses provide Patients with relaxation technique to reduce the anxiety level with cardiac catheterigation. This will enable them to practice effective comprehensive nursing.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify effects of anxiety, social support, and Taegyo practice toward maternal-fetal attachment in pregnant women having an abortion. Method: Participants included 99 pregnant women having an abortion, who participated in this study. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression with the SPSS WIN 23.0 program. Results: Maternal-fetal attachment was significantly negatively correlated with anxiety, and significantly positively correlated with social support and Taegyo practice. Spousal support and Taegyo practice, explained 43.8% of participants' maternal-fetal attachment. Conclusion: Results indicate that less anxiety and more social support, and Taegyo practice in pregnant women having an abortion, were associated with stronger maternal-fetal attachment. To strengthen the maternal-fetal attachment of pregnant women having an abortion experience, it would be necessary to develop and implement the Taegyo program, focusing on practicing Taegyo-related encouragement. Additionally, it is recommended that nursing intervention is provided, to encourage families to participate in the Taegyo practice together throughout the gestational period, and to maintain a positive relationship among partners.
Abnormal adaptation of the stress-response system following traumatic stress can lead to alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis that may contribute to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study used several behavioral tests to investigate the anxiolytic-like and antidepressant activity of L-tetrahydropalmatine (L-THP) in an experimental rat model of anxiety and depression induced by single prolonged stress (SPS), an animal model of PTSD. Male rats were treated intraperitoneally (i.p.) with vehicle or varied doses of THP 30 min prior to SPS for 8 consecutive days. Daily THP (50 mg/kg) administration significantly increased the number and duration of open arm visits in the elevated plus maze (EPM) test, reduced the anxiety index, increased the risk assessment, and increased the number of head dips over the borders of the open arms after SPS. THP was also associated with increased time spent at the center of the open field, reduced grooming behaviors in the EPM test, and reduced time spent immobile in the forced swimming test (FST). It also blocked the decrease in neuropeptide Y (NPY) and the increase in corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) expression in the hypothalamus. This is the first study to determine that THP exerts pronounced anxiolytic-like and antidepressant effects on the development of the behavioral and biochemical symptoms associated with PTSD, indicating its prophylactic potential. Thus, THP reversed several behavioral impairments triggered by the traumatic stress of SPS and is a potential non-invasive therapeutic intervention for PTSD.
This study was done to determine the relationship between the anxiety levels of hospitalized psychiatric patients and various influencing variables. The purpose of this study was to determine factors that may help hospitalized psychiatric patients to experience lower levels of anxiety in relation to changing situations and provide the basic data for a dynamic approach which is important in the field of modern psychiatric nursing that understands and analyses the meaning of patients behavior. The anxiety may produce stress, which is a common experience among all human beings. Patients may merely feel uncomfortable in the state of mild anxiety, however, the severe state could be an obstacle to treatment and recovery from disease. The anxiety of the psychiatric patient is a factor which greatly influencing the patient's behavior, so his disorderd behavior is an expression of defence or pathologically fixed behavior. According the psychiatric patient's anxiety at the time of admission is the concern of the health team. The nurse's special concern has to do with understanding and supporting the patient and meeting his individual needs by frequent close contact during the entire hospitalization period, compared to other teamembers the nurse's responsibility in this regard is greated. So this study emphasizes the necessity of creating conditions these, but above all the psychiatric nurse should create a therapeutic environment by not only regarding the patient's behavior or symptoms but understanding the meaning of them. The subjects of this study were 57 psychiatric patients selected from the K neuropsychiatric hospital located in Kunsan city. Data were collected twice from the same patients within a 24 hour period after admission and 10 days after admission. (September 18th to November 8th, 1980). The data collected method was through direct interview, and the interview time was 20 minutes for each patient. Data analysis included Item Analysis & Internal Consistency Reliability Tests, Percentages, t-test, analysis of variance and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The findings of this study were as follows. A. Test of Hypothesis a. Hypothesis 1 :“The anxiety level of psychiatric patients within 24 hours after admission will be higher than those of the same patients 10 days after admission,”was accepted. (t = 3. 15 ; p < 0.005) b. Hypothesi 2:“The more the number of admissions the higher the level of anxiety related to two categories”, was accepted. (affective anxiety: F = 5.50, p < 0.005, Somatic anxiety: F = 9.12, p <.
Every patient, who enters the hospital has a potential for becoming anxious. The control of hospitalization anxiety experienced by hospital patients is considered to be an important factor in the process of recovery from illness. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between informativeness and hospitalization anxiety in order to give basic data for psycho-social aspect of nursing care for hospitalized patients. One hundred patients admitted to Kyungpook National University Hospital during the period of Jan. to June 1975 were sampled and divided into two groups; fifty of experimental and fifty of control group. The set of informations prepared by the investigator were given additionally to experimental group while the control group only received routine informations. Both groups were rated according to the Hospitalization Informativeness Scale which consisted of 24 questionaries and 4 categories and Hospitalization Anxiety Scale one or two days prior to discharge from the hospital. The results of the study were as follows; 1 . Mean values of Hospitalization Informativeness Scale revealed significant differences at 0.01 level with experimental group showing higher mean value. Age, sex ana educational states aid not influence the mean values of Hospitalization Informativeness Scale in both groups. 2 . The length of hospitalization did not influence significantly on the mean value of Hospitalization Informativeness Scale in both groups. 3. Rank difference correlation coefficiently between mean value of Hospitalization Informativeness Scale and the importance of information the patient's perceived were revealed significant at 0.01 level in all 4 categories such as admission discharge, treatment and nursing activities, diagnostic test, diagnosis and prognosis, health teaching for the patient and family in experimental group. While, only two categories such as treatment and nursing activities and health teaching for the patient and family in control group were revealed significant correlation. 4. Mean value of Hospitalization Anxiety Scale revealed significant difference at 0.05 level with the experimental group showing lower Hospitalization Anxiety Scale. 5. Correlation coefficiently between Hospitalization Informativeness Scale and Hospitalization Anxiety Scale were revealed significant at 0.01 level in experimental group but there was no significant correlation in control group.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a simulation-based educational program on anxiety and discomfort in patients with early stage of stomach cancer or stomach adenoma undergoing gastroendoscopic surgery. Methods: The study employed a non-equivalence control group and non-synchronized design to prevent diffusion of treatment. Data were collected from 110 patients (experimental group=55, control group=55) admitted to a department of gastroenterology to undergo gastroendoscopic surgery for early stage of stomach cancer or stomach adenoma. The program was conducted as a 30-minute simulation-based education including 12 processes which patients would experience. Outcome variables were state anxiety, objective discomfort, and subjective discomfort. Results: The scores of state anxiety in the experimental group significantly decreased over time compared to those in the control group. The scores of objective and subjective discomfort after surgery in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Conclusion: The study findings suggested that the simulation-based educational program making a person feel sense of real experiences could reduce anxiety and discomfort in gastroendoscopic surgery patients.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effects of education, using a relocation information guidebook, on the family caregivers of patients who were scheduled to be transferred from a neurosurgical intensive care unit to a general ward. Methods: They were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n = 21) and a control group (n = 20). A relocation information guidebook was created based on a literature review and an interview with five family caregivers about how to satisfy their needs. The collected data were analyzed with a ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, paired t-test, and t-test. Results: The effect of education, using the relocation information guidebook, on the family caregivers of patients who were relocated to a general ward from the neurosurgical intensive care unit was not significant for relocation stress (t = 0.94p, = .352) or anxiety (t = 1.25, p = .217), but was significant for education satisfaction (t = -2.50, p = .017). Conclusion: There were no differences in relocation stress and anxiety scores between the control and experimental groups. However, several methodological issues were highlighted that must be considered in future research, including the timing and measurement of transfer anxiety, and the intervention itself.
Purpose: This study is to evaluate the effect of abdominal breathing on postoperative pain, state anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate of cardiac surgery patients treated in intensive care unit. Methods: A non-synchronized design of nonequivalent control group pre-post test was used. Participants were divided into an experimental group(n=22) and a control group(n=21). Just usual postoperative treatments were provided to the control group, while abdominal breathing interventions were provided to the experimental group, in addition to usual treatments. The intervention was consisted of 4 stages-introductions, breathing perception, breathing training, and closing-and it lasted twelve minutes in total. Pain, state anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate were the dependent variables of the abdominal breathing. Results: Those who carried out abdominal breathing showed a significant reduction in pain, as well as decrease of systolic blood pressure. However, it turned out to have no effect on state anxiety, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. Conclusion: Abdominal breathing is simple and harmless and is effective for reducing postoperative pain.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to explore the concept of uncertainty and to examine the relationships among uncertainty, appraisal of uncertainty, depression, anxiety, and perceived health status in patients with atrial fibrillation. Method: The study utilized a descriptive correlational survey design using a face to face interview method. A convenience sample of 49 subjects were recruited from K university hospital over 8 months. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and partial correlation analysis. Results: 1) Subjects perceived with moderately high uncertainty(M=65.98); moderate physical health(M=39.80), mental health(M=47.38), and general health(M=2.94); moderate anxiety(M= 44.78); and slightly low depression(M=15.33). 2) There were significant differences in uncertainty by gender and education. 3) Uncertainty and danger appraisal were significantly correlated(r=.32, p=.03) while the uncertainty was not associated with opportunity appraisal. 4) Uncertainty was significantly correlated with mental health(r=-.31, p=.04), anxiety(r=.38, p=.01), and depression(r=.37, p=.01). Conclusion: This study was the first trial to explore uncertainty and to examine the relationships among its associated factors in Korean patients with atrial fibrillation. Thus, based on the findings of this study, directions for nursing practice and further nursing research for patients with atrial fibrillation were suggested.

Objectives : Anxiety is a common co-morbid symptom in patients with epilepsy, which can affect the treatment and prognosis of epilepsy patients. This study is designed to compare the characteristics of anxiety between epilepsy patients and normal controls and also analyze them in epilepsy patients by examining both seizure-related and socio-demographic variables. Methods : As cross-sectional study, 80 epilepsy patients were enrolled from January to July 2008. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-(STAI) was used to assess the characteristics of anxiety. STAI is composed of transitory episodes of anxiety-(state subscale of STAI ; STAI-S) and stable personality features presenting chronic levels of anxiety-(trait subscale of STAI ; STAI-T). As controls, 113 healthy age-and sex-matched people were included. Results : The mean score of STAI-S and STAI-T were not different in both groups(STAI-S ; p=0.998, STAIT ; p=0.343). Within patients, patients without occupational engagement showed higher STAI-S(p<0.001) and tendency to higher STAI-T(p=0.052). Patients with depression showed higher score in both modalities(STAIS and STAI-T ; p<0.001). Patients with aura showed higher STAI-T(p=0.031). Conclusions : STAI-S and STAI-T was not significantly different between patients and controls. Of 3 factors related to anxiety, higher STAI-T in patients with aura is likely to represent misunderstanding internal and external changes as an aura and worrying about impending seizure. Occupational engagement and depression had relation to both STAI-S and STAI-T and more concern is needed to evaluate the risk of anxiety and manage it appropriately.
