In nature, marine mussels (Mytilus edulis) suffer less fouling colonization on the newly formed sides of their shells. Using settlement assays with algal spores of Porphyra suborbiculata, we determined that spore attachment and germination on the periostracum decreased to 36.8 and 3.3 %, respectively. Additionally, the spore settlement was considerably diminished by periostracum dichloromethane extracts containing 19 % oleamide, a major antifouling compound. A scanning electron micrograph of the surface revealed a regular ripple structure with approximately $1.4{\mu}m$ between ripples. Based on these results, mussel periostraca or their associated biomimetic materials may become environmentally friendly, antifouling agents for preventing the settlement of soft foulants.

The use of antifouling(AF) paints is the effective method for the protection of underwater structures from the development of marine fouling organisms. The ban on harmful substances in antifouling paints requires the development of new antifouling strategies although Tributyitin (TBT) compound had been used extensively as an active ingredient Alternatives should be as effective as conventional paints but have lower toxicity. In the present study, a TBT-free self-polishing (Cu SPC) AF paint containing $Cu_2O$, a Cu free SPC AF paint, and a Foul-release silicone AF paint, which were commercially available, were examined to investigate environmental erects of leakage waters employing Sebastes shlegeli and Artemia. Survival rates were inversely proportional to the concentration of leakage waters from AF paints and the acute toxicity of SPC AF paints was relatively higher than that of foul release AF paints.

Marine and hydraulic structures are subject to durability damage not only due to the penetration of sea water but also due to the attachment of marine organisms. Therefore, in this study, we tried to develop an antifouling coating agent with self-cleaning function for marine concrete. It was confirmed that the antifouling coating agent mixed with AKD, cellulose nanofibers and BADGE had sufficient antifouling performance at a well hydrophobicity of around 140° in contact angle and an inclination angle of 15°. In the abrasion resistance test of the surface, only a maximum loss of 0.015 g occurred. In the durability test, as a result of the chloride ion permeation test, almost no chloride ion permeation occurred in the variable where the coating agent was applied, and carbonation and freeze-thaw damage also rarely occurred, so it was analyzed that it was effective in securing durability of concrete.
Recently the problem of the fouling organisms, especially Sn-compounds is expanded to environmental problems from the chemical reaction with imposex and secondary contamination. One of the existing antifouling system, antifouling paints, is regulated from 2012, July because of seriousness about toxic substances such as TBT, mercury, copper and so on. TBT is known that causes a variety of biological inhibition in various chemicals even a very small amount of concentration. So it has been developed to replace it. In this paper, we try to develope a new system with the environmental background and the research of the adhesion characteristics of fouling organisms using a low current, high frequency high voltage pulse power, not toxic compounds.

This study try to finding the self-detergency performance of adherent pollutant on the mortar surface by using the developed silicate based antifouling coating material. Developed coating material coated on the surface of mortar test piece and after 30 minutes, over layed already coated mortar surface. After 7 days, the surface is polluted with crayons and oily magic marker. After 24 hours, contaminated area was wiped out the water. From the result of self-detergency performance test, it is concluded the developed material could be used as a detergent the contaminated concrete surface.
Mussels are major fouling organisms causing serious technical and economic problems. In this study, antifouling activity towards mussel was found in three compounds isolated from a marine bacterium associated with the sea anemone Haliplanella sp. This bacterial strain, called PE2, was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus using morphology, biochemical tests, and phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of 16S rRNA and four housekeeping genes (rpoD, gyrB, rctB, and toxR). Three small-molecule compounds (indole, 3-formylindole, and cyclo (Pro-Leu)) were purified from the ethyl acetate extract of V. alginolyticus PE2 using column chromatography techniques. They all significantly inhibited byssal thread production of the green mussel Perna viridis, with $EC_{50}$ values of $24.45{\mu}g/ml$ for indole, $50.07{\mu}g/ml$ for 3-formylindole, and $49.24{\mu}g/ml$ for cyclo (Pro-Leu). Previous research on the antifouling activity of metabolites from marine bacteria towards mussels is scarce. Indole, 3-formylindole and cyclo (Pro-Leu) also exhibited antifouling activity against settlement of the barnacle Balanus albicostatus ($EC_{50}$ values of 8.84, 0.43, and $11.35{\mu}g/ml$, respectively) and the marine bacterium Pseudomonas sp. ($EC_{50}$ values of 42.68, 69.68, and $39.05{\mu}g/ml$, respectively). These results suggested that the three compounds are potentially useful for environmentally friendly mussel control and/or the development of new antifouling additives that are effective against several biofoulers.

The $MnO_x-WO_3-TiO_2$ nanoscale powders were synthesized by sol-gel method in order to prevent the biological fouling on the ships and offshore structures. Powder characteristics and antifouling performance were investigated with respect to the crystalline, microstructure and surface property for application in self-polishing copolymer resins. The high antifouling activity of $TiO_2$-system biocide was attributed to its redox potential and soluble metal ions originating from tungsten oxides according to the improvements in the powder characteristics. Based on their physio-chemical characterizations, the specific surface areas of powders were about $90m^2/g$ and the grain size was in the region 100 ~ 150 nm. Powder characteristics and surface properties were improved by the addition of $WO_3$. Antifouling performance were analyzed according to their surface properties and static immersion tests to determine the effects of the $TiO_2$-system compounds. The surface of 2 wt. % added sample was clean for 5 month. This may be attributed to the ability of $MnO_x-WO_3-TiO_2$ powders to act as a promoter in antifouling agents.
Antifouling agents including tributyltin (TBT) compound and its derivatives have been used for many years, but the usage of TBT in Korea was legally restricted in 2003, due to its significant environmental impact. Following this, many new alternative antifouling agents have been used. In this experiment, four major antifouling agents were selectively analyzed to study their release in seawater and tidal flats on the Korean Peninsula. These new antifouling agents were extracted from the seawater and tidal flats using a liquid-liquid extraction method and microwave extraction, respectively. The measured concentrations of Irgarol 1051, Sea-Nine 211, Dichlofluanid and Chlorothalonil ranged from N.D.$-23.80ng/{\ell}$, N.D.$-15.30ng/{\ell}$, N.D.$-61.69ng/{\ell}$ and N.D.$-4.19ng/{\ell}$ in the seawater samples and from N.D.-159.45 ng/g, N.D.-476.57 ng/g, N.D.-59.79 ng/g and N.D.-21.27 ng/g in the tidal flat samples, respectively. Interestingly, these new antifouling agents were not detected in any area in the tidal flats at Pusan, whereas a certain amount of them was found in the seawater.
