The structural, magnetic, and transport properties of a mono-layered manganite $La_{0.7}Sr_{1.3}MnO_{4+{\delta}}$ were investigated using variable temperature neutron powder diffraction as well as magnetization and transport measurements. The compound adopts the tetragonal I4/mmm symmetry and exhibits no magnetic reflection in the temperature region of 10 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K. A weak ferromagnetic (FM) transition occurs about 130 K, which almost coincides with the onset of a metal-insulator (M-I) transition. Extra oxygen that occupies the interstitial site between the [(La,Sr)O] layers makes the spacing between the [MnO₂] layers shorten, which enhances the inter-layer coupling and eventually leads to the M-I transition. We also found negative magneto resistance (MR) below the M-I transition temperature, which can be understood on the basis of the percolative transport via FM metallic domains in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating matrix.
We have studied electronic and magnetic structure of cubane-type Mn4 cluster using OpenMX method based on density functional method. The calculated density of states shows that the octahedron of O atoms split $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ energy levels like bulk MnO with cubic structure. Total energy with antiferromagnetic spin configuration is lower than those of other spin configurations because of super exchange interaction. Calculated exchange interaction J between Mn atoms with anti-parallel spin is larger than between Mn atoms with parallel spin.
We have studied electronic structures and magnetic properties of $YMnO_3,\;ScManO_3$ with hexagonal structure using Full Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FLAPW) method based on LSDA method. LSDA calculation results show that multiferroic $YMnO_3$ shows energy gap due to hexagonal symmetry and magnetic interaction. Because of insulating gap and small Y ion, $YMnO_3$ shows magnetic and ferroelectric state. However, $ScMnO_3$ does not show the energy gap because of strong hybridization of Mn-O for LSDA calculation. We confirmed the stability of multiferroic state for $YMnO_3\;and\;ScManO_3$ using total energy calculations. The antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric states have the lowest energy about 100 meV.
We have investigated the magnetic properties of $ErFe_2O_4$. Stoichiometric polycrystalline sample of $ErFe_2O_4$ was prepared by solid-state reaction method in a stream of CO/$CO_2$ gas. The X-ray power diffraction pattern shows that the diffraction peaks are indexed with respect to the rhombohedral structure with a space group of R3m. The temperature dependent magnetization for $ErFe_2O_4$ shows two-step phase transitions at about 220 and 250 K. The transition at 250 K is an antiferromagnetic transition and that at 220 K is a structural transition.
A FeRh alloy is a well-known efficient magnetocaloric material and some experimental and theoretical studies of bulk FeRh have been reported already by several groups. In this study we report first-principles calculations on magnetic properties of different thickness FeRh thin films in order to investigate the possibility to enhance further the magnetocaloric efficiency. We used two methods of a Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) code and SIESTA package. We found that the FeRh thin films have quite different magnetic properties from the bulk when the thickness is thinner than 6-atomic-layers. While bulk FeRh has a G-type antiferromagnetic(AFM) state, thin films which are thinner than 6-atomic-layers have an A-type AFM state or a ferromagnetic (FM) state. We will discuss possibility of magnetic phase transitions of the FeRh thin films in the view point of a magnetocaloric effect. And we found 4-, 5-, 6-layers films with Fe surface and 7-layers film with Rh surface are FM and they have relatively small magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) energy about less than 70 meV. The small MCA energy leads to reduction of the strength of magnetic field in operating a magnetic refrigerator.
[ $^{11}B$ ] nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were performed on the single crystals of $TbB_4$ to investigate local electronic structure and 4f spin dynamics. $^{11}B$ NMR spectrum, Knight shift, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates were measured down to 4K at 8T. $^{11}B$ NMR shift and linewidth are huge and strongly temperature dependent due to the 4f moments. In addition, both are proportional to magnetic susceptibility, indicating that the hyperfine field at the boron site originates from the 4f spins of Tb. Below $T_N$, the single broad resonance peak of $^{11}B$ NMR splits into several peaks reflecting the local magnetic fields due to antiferromagnetic spin arrangements. The longitudinal and the transverse relaxation rates, $1/T_1\;and\;1/T_2$, independent of temperature above $T_N$, decreases tremendously confirming huge suppression of spin fluctuation below $T_N$.

The heavy-fermion compound $CeRhIn_5$ is a prototypical antiferromagnet where Ce 4f moments align antiferromagnetically below 3.8 K. When doped with Hg, the antiferromagnetic transition $T_N$ initially decreases, becomes flat, and increases again with further increasing Hg concentration. Here we report pressure effects on the electrical resistivity of a 0.45 % Hg-doped $CeRhIn_5$, where $T_N$ is 3.4 K and the magnetic structure is same as that of the undoped compound with Q=(1/2, 1/2, 0.298). With increasing pressure, $T_N$ is suppressed and a superconducting state emerges. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity near an optimal pressure shows a power-law behavior that deviates from a $T^2$ dependence, indicating presence of abundant quantum fluctuations near the optimal pressure.

Systematic studies on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of light rare earth element(RE) compounds with Pb, $REPb_{2}$, have been carried out. Their crystal structure has been identified to be a $MoSi_{2}$-type. The values of the effective magnetic moment for $CePb_{2},\;PrPb_{2}\;and\;NdPb_{2}$ are respectively very close to the theoretical values of $RE^{3+}$. These three compounds are antiferromagnetic and exhibit a metamagnetic transition. The magnitude of the Neel temperature is proportional to two-thirds of the de Gennes factor. The magnetic entropy change for $NdPb_{2}$ is contrast to the value for $CePb_{2}$ heavy-fermion compound, comparable to the theoretical value. The magnetic contribution to the temperature dependence of resistivity for $PrPb_{2}$ is given by a form of -lnT in a wide temperature range, implying the Kondo system in analogy with $Cepb_{2}$.
Three new cyanide-bridged $Cr^{III}Mn^{II}$ binuclear complexes, $[Mn(phen)_2Cl][Cr(bpmb)(CN)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{1}$) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, $bpdmb^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4-methyl-benzenate), $[Mn(phen)_2Cl][Cr(bpmb)-(CN)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{2}$) ($bpdmb^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4,5-dimethyl-benzenate), and $[Mn(phen)_2Cl]-[Cr(bpClb)(CN)_2]{\cdot}CH_3OH{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{3}$) ($bpClb^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4-chloro-benzenate) were obtained based on $Mn(phen)_2Cl_2$ and a series of dicyanidechromate(III) building blocks. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows the structures of the three complexes are dimeric type with two different metal centers linked by a cyanide group from corresponding dicyanidechromate(III) building block. Magnetic investigations indicate the existence of relatively weak antiferromagnetic coupling between Cr(III) and Mn(II) ions with best-fit constants $J_{CrMn}=-2.78(5)cm^{-1}$ for $\mathbf{1}$, $J_{CrMn}=-3.02(2)cm^{-1}$ for $\mathbf{2}$ and $J_{CrMn}=-2.27(3)cm^{-1}$ for $\mathbf{3}$ based on the spin exchange Hamiltonian = $-2J_{CrMn}\hat{S}_{Cr}\hat{S}_{Mn}$. The magneto-structural correlation of cyanide-bridged $Cr^{III}Mn^{II}$ complexes has been discussed at last.

Recently, hexagonal manganites have attracted much attention because of the coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. The crystal structure of hexagonal manganites consists of $MnO_5$ polyhedra in which $Mn^{3+}$ ion is surrounded by three oxygen atoms in plane and two apical oxygen ions. The Mn ions within Mn-O plane form a triangular lattice and couple the spins through the AFM superexchange interaction. Due to incomplete AFM coupling between neighboring Mn ions in the triangular lattice, the system forms a geometrically-frustrated magnetic state. Among hexagonal manganites, $YMnO_3$, in particular, is the best known experimentally since the f states are empty. In addition, for applications, $YMnO_3$ thin films have been known as promising candidates for non-volatile ferroelectric random access memories. However, $YMnO_3$ has low magnetic order temperature (~70 K) and A-type AFM structure, which hinders its applications. We have synthesized $YMn1_{-x}Cr_xO_3$ (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1) samples by the conventional solid-state reaction. The powders of stoichiometric proportions were mixed, and calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ for $YMn1_{-x}Cr_xO_3$ for 24 h. The obtained powders were ground, and pressed into 5-mm-thick disks of 1/2-inch diameter. The disks were directly put into the oven, and heated up to $1,300^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 24 h. The phase of samples was checked at room temperature by powder x-ray diffraction using a Rigaku Miniflex diffractometer with Cu $K{\alpha}$ radiation. All the magnetization measurements were carried out with a superconducting quantum-interference-device magnetometer. Our experiments point out that the Cr-doped samples show the characteristics of a spin-glass state at low temperatures.
