  • To develop natural food preservatives, methanol and water extracts were prepared from the Suaeda maritima and their antibacterial activities were examined against 12 microorganisms which were food borne pathogens bacteria, food poisoning microorganisms and food-related bacteria. Methanol extracts exhibited antibacterial activities for the 5 Gram positve and 7 Gram negative bacteria by agar diffusion method, The antibacterial activities and cell growth inhibition were investigated on each strain with the different concentrations of Suaeda maritima extracts. Antibacterial activities were shown in root, stem, furit extracts of Suaeda maritima. However stem and fruit extracts showed weak antibacterial activity against the tested microorganisms. Root extracts showed the highest antibacterial activities against microorganisms tested, such as Bacillus cereus,Bacillus subtilis, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus. The highest antibacterial activity against bacteria test was found in the methanol extract.

  • Antibacterial activities of the major phenolic components from Camellia sinensis L. were investigated against several pathogenic microorganisms including Gram-positive strains like Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Streptococcus pyogens 308A; and Gram-negative strains like Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Escherichia coli 078, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 9027, and Enterobacter cloacae 1321E. The MIC values demonstrate that both (-)-epicatechin and (-)-epigallocatechin were more considerably toxic against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 than the other two catechins like (-)-epicatechingallate and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate. (-)-Epicatechingallate and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate were most inhibitory against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. As a result, (-)-epicatechin showed predominant antibacterial activities among tea varieties. The contents of major polyphenolic components such as four catechins, theaflavin, and quercetin were different according to fermentation processes. The total contents of four catechins were ranged from 13.81 to 1.33%, with (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate being dominant among tea varieties; theaflavin was found the characteristic pigment in fully-fermented black tea.

  • The MeOH extract of seeds of Cerbera odollam Gaertn. (Apocynaceae) was screened for its antibacterial, cytotoxic and neuropharmacological activities. The extract showed moderate anti-bacterial activity against Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus saprophyticus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. It exhibited high level cytotoxicity against brine shrimp ($LC_{50}$: $3\;{\mu}g/ml$). The extract potentiated pentobarbital induced sleeping time in mice which was further supported by the exploratory behavior test at dose of 25 mg/kg. The overall results tend to suggest the antibacterial, cytotoxic and CNS depressant activities of the extract.

  • It has been elucidated that magnolol and honokiol, isolated from the stem bark of Magnolia obovata, had potent antibacterial activity against a cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans. They also show a significant antibacterial activity against Bacillus anthracis, which causes malignant pustule and woolsorter disease in human. Some hydroxybiphenyl derivatives are synthesized from starting materials, phenylphenols and biphenols by means of Claisen's rearrangement and Elb's method to develop more potent antibacterial chemicals and to investigate the structure-activity relationships. The introduction of allyl groups to the aromatic rings of starting materials shows increase of antibacterial activities, but the number and positions of them do not effect their activities. Furthermore, the introduction of hydroxy group to aromatic rings also increases the activity.

  • The dyeing properties of cotton fabric with Inonotus obliquus are studied by investigating the effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptakes such as, the concentration of Inonotus obliquus, dyeing temperature, time, and pH values. In addition, the effects of mordants on dye uptakes and antibacterial activities are also investigated. The results are summarized as follows: The dye uptakes of dyed fabrics were increased gradually with an increasing concentration of Inonotus obliquus. K/S values were the highest when the dyeing temperature and time were at $60^{\circ}C$ and 60 minutes, respectively. As for the changes of pH values of dyeing solution, K/S values recorded the highest at pH3-pH5. Antibacterial activities of Inonotus obliquus dyeing solution showed a significant effect in dyed cotton fabric with mordanting.

  • New quinolone derivatives of 7-(cis- or trans-3-amino-4-mehtylthiomethylpyrrolidinyl) quinolone-3-carboxylic acids were synthesized by condensation of 7-halo substituted quinolone-3-carboxylic acids with cis- or trans-3-amino-4-mehtylthiomethylpyrrolidine. Some of these compounds showed broad spectra of antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and exhibited much stronger activity against MRSA.

  • Lactobacillus crispatus ATCC 33820 and L. gasseri ATCC 33323 were grown in MRS broth (pH 6.5) at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and the antibacterial activities of cell free culture supernatants were determined by the agar well diffusion method. The culture supernatants were inhibitory to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pediococcus acidilacticii, and Lactobacillus helveticus. The supernatants did not show any lysozyme activity. Addition of catalase did not affect the antibacterial activities of the supernatants. The antibacterial substances were heat stable (100$^{\circ}C$ for 60 min) and sensitive to proteases.

  • A series of 2-chloro and 2-bromo-3-(substituted)-1, 4-naphthalenedione derivatives (1-25) were tested for antifungal and antibacterial activities in vitro against Candida albicans 10231 aand Local, Aspergillus niger KCTC 1231, Tricophyton mentagrophytes KCTC 6085, Fusarium oxysporium KTCC 6501, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Pseudomonas arruginosa NCTC 10490, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6358p, Escherichia coli NIHJ and Acinetobacter baumanii Local. The MiC values were determined by twofold afar diution/streak method. Among thee derivatives, 1, 9, 20, 21, 23 and 25 showed more potent antifungal activities than fluconazole. 20 and 23 completely inhibited the gorwth of fungi, such as Candida albicans, Aspegillus niger, Ticophyton mentagrophytes and fusarium oxysporium, at $3.2\;\mu{g/ml}$. Also some derivatives had the antibacterial activities against Gram-positive bacteria.

  • The in vitro antibacterial activities of anti-acne agents prepared from the extracts of natural sources were investigated against several bacteria including antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant Propionibacterium acnes. SD-1 and SD-2 were prepared with different formulations and they showed strong antibacterial activities. The anti-acne agents completely inhibited the growth of the tested strains at the concentration of 0.5%. There was no difference in antibacterial activity between antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant P. acnes. The inhibitory activities of two agents showed time-dependent manner. In S. aureus, time-kill curve demonstrated 2.8- and 3.4-$log_{10}$-unit killing after 8 h with SD-1 and SD-2, respectively. In P. acnes, time-killing curve demonstrated 5.1- and 6.1-$log_{10}$-unit killing after 24 h with SD-1 and SD-2, respectively. SD-2 showed stronger antimicrobial activity than SD-1. From these results, we expect that SD-1 and SD-2 have strong antibacterial activities and have advantages for treating acne.
