Multi-Input, Multi-Output system suffers for the spatial channel correlation due to lack of spatial diversity. To overcome this defect, the antenna selection and switching system is proposed which selects the adequate antenna subset with highest channel diversity gain and switches the trasmission techniques according to channel environments. However. its performance analysis is insufficient due to the difficulty of modeling the spatial channel correlation. In this paper, the theoretical upper bound of symbol error probability is derived by using the statistical properties of Frobenius norm and minimum eigen-value of channel matrix. By computer simulation, it is shown that the derived theoretical upper bound is similar to the simulation results.

A smart phone subscriber needs wide bandwidth services for more fast data communication on the internet. The conventional MIMO system is now developing to resolve these problems with limited device space for antenna and frequency band environment reserved. One of way to make it practically is to add the number of antennas theoretically. But it is difficult to increase the antenna element as a limited space on the system. Therefore an active beam forming scheme is known as a way of constructing a Compact MIMO system for that. In this paper, the fast switching control block was suggested to adjust a reactance of the antenna element and verified experimentally the effects by switching signal on an orthogonal beam forming through a spatial domain.

In this paper, we consider the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based transmission incoorperating with beam-switching and space-time coding. Specifically, we consider three configurations; (1) the beamforming technique, (2) the spatial diversity technique and (3) their combination and evaluate the performance in wireless personal area network (WPAN) environment. For the beam-forming technique, we consider the beam-switching which is performed at RF front-end with a pre-defined set of beams and for the space-time coding, we consider the Alamauti scheme with antenna selection. For the combined scheme, we divide the antennas used into two group to generate two independent beams and apply the two-antenna Alamauti scheme over the two beams. For these three configurations, performance is evaluated in terms of the SNR gain.

Three-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output (3D MIMO) and large-scale MIMO are two promising technologies for upcoming high data rate wireless communications, since the inter-user interference can be reduced by exploiting antenna vertical gain and degree of freedom, respectively. In this paper, we derive the achievable sum rate of 3D MIMO systems employing zero-forcing (ZF) receivers, accounting for log-normal shadowing fading, path-loss and antenna gain. In particular, we consider the prevalent log-normal model and propose a novel closed-form lower bound on the achievable sum rate exploiting elevation features. Using the lower bound as a starting point, we pursue the "large-system" analysis and derive a closed-form expression when the number of antennas grows large for fixed average transmit power and fixed total transmit power schemes. We further model a high-building with several floors. Due to the floor height, different floors correspond to different elevation angles. Therefore, the asymptotic achievable sum rate performances for each floor and the whole building considering the elevation features are analyzed and the effects of tilt angle and user distribution for both horizontal and vertical dimensions are discussed. Finally, the relationship between the achievable sum rate and the number of users is investigated and the optimal number of users to maximize the sum rate performance is determined.

In this paper a novel design of equilateral-triangular microstrip antenna using PIN diode fur switching the resonant frequency is presented and experimentally studied. The proposed antenna has changed the resonant frequency by length of spur-lines on the patch, and PIN diodes are utilized to switch the spur-line on and off. The shape of the spur-line is changed according to the on and off states of PIN diode and the equilateral triangular microstrip antenna has different resonant frequencies in accordance with them. The resonant frequency is 1.22 GHz with off states since the surface currents flow the periphery of T shape spur-lines, while the resonant frequency is 1.82 GHz with on states since the surface currents are little effect with the conventional equilateral triangular microstrip antenna. The radiation pattern of the proposed antenna has a good linear polarization with the cross polarization of -20 dB both with on and off states.

In this paper, the microstrip phased array antennas with coupling-slots for the base station of mobile communication is proposed and anlyzed with accurate analysis method which is based on both reciprocity principle and full-wave analysis. The basis functions used for the numerical analysis are determined depending upon the accuracy, convergence properties of the solution, and the computation time. The patch uses 3 EB mode and the slot uses IPWS mode. The designed phased array antenna has 8 slot-coupled microstrip patch array elements and the beam scanning capability is obtained by using the 4-bit PIN-diode phase shifters as switching devices which are consisted of the loaded line phase shifters for 30.deg. and 60.deg. and the reflection type phase shifters for 90.deg. and 180.deg. repectively. The 4-bits phase shifters which aremade by connecting each phase shifter have about 2.deg.-3.deg. phase errors and their insertion loss are about 3dB for each phase state. The fabricated 8-element phased array antenna with 4-bits phase shifters provides 12.deg.-14.deg. beamwidths depending on the scanning angle and is capable of scanning its beam to .+-.45.deg. with 9.deg. intervals, and the gain 12dBi. The overall results show that the slot-coupled phased array antenna has great advantages of wideband, high gain and reduced spurious radiation. Also, the antenna can be made small and thin. Furthermore, the scanning property of this antenna allows for its application in several areas, such as mobile communication system and PCS.
This paper describes a compact microstrip active antenna with dual polarization. The antenna, receiving both a left-hand circularly polarized wave and a right-hand circularly polarized wave, has a function of polarization diversity. A square-shaped empty room is located on the inside of the microstrip radiator so that the size has been reduced. And slots are added around feeding point to improve input matching. Also, amplifier and switching circuitry are placed at the empty room to increase antenna gain and to select one of the circular polarizations, respectively. The proposed antenna has been applied to GPS(global positioning system). The measurement results show that it has 10dB-impedance bandwidth, 3dB axial bandwidth of about 50MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 90degree, and gain of 13dBi, respectively, for RHCP. Also, it has 3dB axial bandwidth of about 50MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 84 degree, and gain of 12dBi, respectively, for LHCP.
We have demonstrated a $Ti:LiNbO_3$ electro-optic electric-field sensor utilizing a $1{\times}2$ Y-fed balanced-bridge Mach-Zehnder interferometric (YBB-MZI) modulator, which uses a 3-dB directional coupler at the output and has two complementary output waveguides. A dc switching voltage of ~25 V and an extinction ratio of ~12.5 dB are observed at a wavelength of $1.3{\mu}m$. For a 20 dBm rf input power, the minimum detectable electric fields are ~8.21, 7.24, and ~13.3 V/m, corresponding to dynamic ranges of ~10, ~12, and ~7 dB at frequencies of 10, 30, and 50 MHz respectively. The sensors exhibit almost linear response for an applied electric-field intensity from 0.29 V/m to 29.8 V/m.
Various nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques have been studied to locate steel rebars of dowel, and to detect invisible damage such as voids and cracks inside concrete and debonding between rebars and concrete caused by corrosions and earthquakes. In this study, the aurhors developed 3-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic (EM) imaging technology to detect such damage and to identify exact location of steel rebars of dowel. The authors have developed sub-surface two-dimensional (2D) imaging technique using tomographic antenna array in previous works. In this study, extending the earlier analytical and experimental works on 2D image reconstruction, a 3D microwave imaging system using tomographic antenna array was developed, and multi-frequency technique was applied to improve quality of the reconstructed image and to reduce background noises. This paper presents the analytical expressions of numerical focusing procedures for 3D image reconstruction and numerical simulation to study the resolution of the system and the effectiveness of multi-frequency technique. Also, the design of 4?4 antenna array with switching devices is introduced as a preliminary study for the final design of whole array.

A compact circular microstrip patch antenna with a switchable circular polarization(CP) is proposed at 2.4 GHz. An unequal cross-shaped slot on a ground plane is utilized as a perturbation. By switching pin diodes mounted on the slot, the CP sense of each antenna can be simply switched from left-handed(LH) CP to right-handed(RH) CP vice versa. Since the perturbation can be made on the ground plane and no bias circuit is required on the patch side, the bias circuit has not effect on the main beam radiation. From the experimental results, the impedance bandwidth and CP bandwidth of the proposed antenna have shown up to 150 MHz and 35 MHz, respectively. The peak gain of the proposed antenna is 1.7 dBi for both CP senses.
