In this study we verified if the electro-coagulation process can treat properly the nitrate and fluoride that are not removed well in the conventional small water treatment plants which usually employ chlorination and filtration only. As we gave a change of electrode material and gap-distance between electrodes, removal efficiency of the nitrate and fluoride was determined by electro-coagulation process which were equipped with aluminum and stainless steel (SUS304) electrodes. In addition, electrode durability was investigated by determination of electrodes mass change during the repetitive experiments. Removal efficiency was great when aluminum was used as an anode material. Nitrate removals increased as electric density and number of electrodes increased, but fluoride removal was less sensitive to both parameters than nitrate. After 10 minutes of contact time with the current density from $1{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3{\times}10^{-3}A/cm^{2}$, nitrate and fluoride concentration ranged from 9.2 to 1.2mg/L and from 0.02 to 0.01mg/L, which satisfied the regulation limits. Regardless of the repeating number of experiments, removal efficiency of both ions were almost similar and the change of electrode mass ranged within ${\pm}$0.5%, indicating that the loss of the electrode mass is not so much great under the limited circumstances.

The feasibility of lead removal by electrolytic coprecipitation was investigated. Electrolysis bath was divided into anode and cathode chamber with anion exchange resin filled membrane. Sea water was electrolyzed and pH of the electrolyte in cathode chamber was increased. Consequently it induced the formation of $Mg(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$. The colloidal type precipitates, hich have high surface area, adsorbed lead ions in sea water and coprecipitated. Sea water electrolyses were conducted at different current density. Concentrations of Mg, Ca and Pb in the solution were measured with titration and ASV method. Morphology and crystallography were analyzed with SEM, EDS and XRD. As pH and current density increased, most of lead ions in the sea water were successfully removed.

For the low-Pt electrodes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs), the optimization of ionomer content for anode catalyst layers was carried out. A commercial catalyst of 20 wt.% Pt/C was used instead of 50 wt.% Pt/C which is commonly used for PEMFCs. The ionomer content varies from 0.6 to 1.2 based on ionomer to carbon ratio (I/C) and the catalyst layer is formed over the electrolyte by the ultrasonic spray process. Evaluation of the prepared MEA in the unit cell showed that the optimal ionomer content of the air electrode was 0.8 on the I/C basis, while the hydrogen electrode was optimal at the relatively high ionomer content of 1.0. In addition, a large difference in cell performance was observed when the ionomer content of the hydrogen electrode was changed. Increasing the ionomer content from 0.6 to 1.0 by I/C in a hydrogen electrode with 0.05 mg/㎠ platinum loading resulted in more than double cell performance improvements on a 0.6 V. Through the analysis of various electrochemical properties in the single cell, it was assumed that the change in ionomer content of the hydrogen electrode affects the water flow between the hydrogen and air electrodes bounded by the membrane in the cell, which affects the overall performance of the cell. A more specific study will be carried out to understand the water flow mechanism in the future, and this study will show that the optimization process of hydrogen electrode can also be a very important cell design variable for the low-Pt and high-performance MEA.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive material because of their superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Furthermore, their geometric features such as a large aspect ratio and a small radius of curvature at tip make them ideal for low-voltage field emission devices including backlight units of liquid crystal display, lighting lamps, X-ray source, microwave amplifiers, electron microscopes, etc. In field emission devices for display applications, the phosphor anode is positioned against the CNT emitters. In most case, light generated from the phosphor by electron bombardment passes through the anode front plate to reach observers. However, light is produced in a narrow depth of the surface of the phosphor layer because phosphor particles are big as much as several micrometers, which means that it is necessary to transmit through the phosphor layer. Hence, a drop of light intensity is unavoidable during this process. In this study, we fabricated a transparent cathode back plate by depositing an ultra-thin film of single walled CNTs (SWCNTs) on an indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrate. Two types of phosphor anode plates were employed to our transparent cathode back plate: One is an ITO glass substrate with a phosphor layer and the other is a Cr-coated glass substrate with phosphor layer. For the former case, light was radiated from both the front and the back sides, where luminance on the back was ~30% higher than that on the front in our experiments. For the other case, however, light was emitted only from the cathode back side as the Cr layer on the anode glass rolled as a reflecting mirror, improving the light luminance as much as ~60% compared with that on the front of one. This study seems to be discussed about the morphologies and field emission characteristics of CNT emitters according to the experimental parameters in fabricating the lamps emitting light on the both sides or only on the cathode back side. The experimental procedures are as follows. First, a CNT aqueous solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified SWCNTs in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). A milliliter or even several tens of micro-liters of CNT solution was deposited onto a porous alumina membrane through vacuum filtration. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated with the 3 M NaOH solution and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to an ITO glass substrate. It is required for CNT film to make standing CNTs up to serve as electron emitter through an adhesive roller activation.
This experiment from March 1, 1998 to August 31, 2001 through XRD, XRF, SEM, EDS had effects as follows. 1. According to the results of test using XRD and EDS, we found that the main ingredients causing corrosion of steel pipe was ${Fe_2}{O_3}$, that of cast iron pipe was $CaCO_3$. 2. The main ingredient of corrosion products in a water pipe was Fe. On an average Fe occuied 93.36% of corrosion products in case of steel pipe while it did 85.47% in case of cast iron pipe. 3. In case of a piped water passed through SCALE BUSTER over 10 times, the corrosion products decreased largely by the galvanic effect and sacrifical anode caused by the concerntration of Zn.

A serious of EK remediation tests on contaminated soil are performed under unsaturated conditions and analyzed for electrical potential, water content, pH and so on. The results indicated that electrical potential and pH distributions in the sample are dependent on the amount and inward/outward flow of hydrogen ion. Specially, for the closed system the water content is largely decreased with the flow of hydrogen. The maximum electrical conductivity is measured at the catholyte of CEM(Sealing) test and directly related to the remedial efficiency. Although pHs in the region near to the anode are similarly developed, the different concentration of lead is measured with the electrical gradient contrary to the lead concentration dependent on pH within the sample.

PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) is a low temperature fuel cell and has many probabilities of commercial use. However, water management is one of the serious technical problems for commercialization. It is necessary to understand the relationship between operation conditions and water behavior in PEMFC channel because it affects fuel cell performance. In this paper, the distribution of current density according to inlet humidity condition is mainly observed and discussed. If the anode inlet is well humidified, electro-osmotic drag is very active. For this reason, current density is very high at inlet side and the distribution is non-uniform.
The gelling agent used in Zn-air cells plays a role in improving battery life. It prevents the evaporation of water and diffusion of $Zn^{2+}$ ions away from the current collector. Additional functionality was incorporated by replacing some of the gelling agents with new materials. Alcohols with moderate viscosity, namely maltose, sucrose, poly ethylene glycol 600, and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose, were used to replace some gelling agents in this work. Among these alcohols, poly ethylene glycol 600 and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose improved the cycle life of full cells. This improved cycle life was attributed to the inhibition of water electrolysis and the improved cycle life of the anode.
This study has carried out a performance of dimensionally stable anode for the purpose of disinfection of Legionella pneumophila in water. Three kinds of electrode were prepared by plating and thermal deposition, which were coated by the oxides of Pt, Ru and Ir on Ti metal surface, respectively. The order of disinfection performance for Legionella pneumophila was Ru/Ti > Ir/Ti > Pt/Ti. Free Cl and $ClO_2$ generation of Ir/Ti electrode was higher than that of two electrodes. However, the concentrations of generated $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ of the Ru/Ti electrode were highest among the three electrodes. The higher NaCl concentration was, the more oxidants was generated and disinfection effect was increased. However, optimum NaCl dosage was 0.0125% due to the regulation on the conductivity and $Cl^-$ concentration for the cooling water quality of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. With the increase of current, oxidants was more generated and following disinfection effect was increased. The increase of electrode distance reduced oxidants generation due to the low electric power, and their disinfection effect was decreased accordingly.

Active oxygen species or free radicals are considered to cause extensive oxidative damage to biological macromolecules, which brings about a variety of diseases as well as aging. Electrolyzed reduced water(ERW) has been regarded as a ideal antioxidative agent in recent years. ERW is produced by passing a diluted salt solution through an electrolytic cell, within which the anode and cathode are separated by membrane. It can be produced reactive materials in ERW near the cathode during the electrolysis of water. ERW have the following advantages over other traditional cleaning agents: effective antioxidative agent, easy preparation, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. The main advantage of ERW is its safety and antioxidative effect. ERW with strong reducing potential can be used to remove dirt and grease from items such as cutting boards and other kitchen utensils. The primary aim of this study is the activation mechanism of oxidation reduction potentials, ion conductivity, pH, and electrochemical properties with reactive materials in ERW.
