Status of Medical Exposure in Korea

  • Medical use of radiation is increasing in recent times and its influence on the population creates almost the same amount of annual natural background radiation in industrialized countries in particular. Thus, medical radiation has become a social issue. This paper is a brief report on the status of medical exposure in Korea by way of consulting from the radiation-related medical societies in Korea.

  • 이 보고서는 국제원자력기구(IAEA, International Atomic Energy Agency) 회원국의 요청에 의해 매2년마다 발간되는 “원자력 기술 분석(Nuclear Technology Review)을 요약한 것이며, 2005년 말을 기준으로 발간된 것이다. 원 보고서에 포함된 내용은 원자력 발전, 핵융합, 핵연료, 방사성 동위원소 및 방사선, 관련 연구 개발 등에 대한 오늘과 향후 발전상을 검토한 것이나 여기서는 원자력 발전을 중심으로 요약했다. 보다 궁금한 사항은 IAEA 연례보고서인 2006년 Annual Report에서도 볼 수 있으며 홈페이지인 WWW.iaea.org을 방문하여 영어로 된 보고서를 접할 수 있다. 이 보고서를 요약한 것은 IAEA에서 보는 각국 및 세계 원자력의 현황과 전망을 소개함으로써 국내의 많은 원자력 가족 및 원자력산업에 조금이라도 도움이 되었으면 하는 데 있다.

Management of multiple odontogenic keratocysts associated with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome: a case report of 11-year follow-up

  • Multiple odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) are a distinguishing feature of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). Owing to the high recurrence rate of syndromes associated OKCs, complete surgical resection is generally recommended as a definitive treatment. Herein, we report the management of multiple OKCs with marsupialization followed by excision with peripheral ostectomy in an NBCCS patient. We then discuss lesion progression over 11 years of annual follow-ups.

우측기관주위의 종격동 종괴로 나타난 상피양 혈관내피종: 증례 보고 (Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma Presenting as a Right Paratracheal Mass: A Case Report)

  • 상피양 혈관내피종(epithelioid hemangioendothelioma)은 낮은 등급의 악성도를 가지는 혈관신생종양으로 신체의 어느 부위에나 발생할 수 있다. 상피양 혈관내피종은 매우 드문 발병률 및 유병률을 가지며, 종격동의 원발성 상피양 혈관내피종은 더욱 드물다. 우리는 우연히 발견된 우측 기관주위 종괴로 내원하여 상피양 혈관내피종을 진단받은 53세 여자 환자의 증례를 경험하였으며, 상대정맥을 침범한 원발성 종격동 상피양 혈관내피종의 병리학적, 영상의학적 소견을 보고한다.

  • MMD의 외과적 치료에서 소아에서는 직접 및 간접적인 혈관문합술을 병합하거나 아니면 간접적인 혈관문합술들을 병합하여 시행하는 경향이 있고, 성인에서는 혈관의 직경이나 MMD의 진행속도로 보아 STA-MCA 문합술과 같은 직접적인 수술이 많이 활용되고 있으나, 소아나 성인에서나 모두 공통적으로 보다 넓은 뇌표면에 여러 가지 수술방법을 병합하는 것이 좀더 광범위한 범위에 뇌혈류 공급을 증가 시키는데 도움이 된다고 보는 경향이다. 수술의 적응증은 혈관조영상에서의 나타난 질병의 정도보다는 acetazolamide를 이용한 PET 나 SPECT 검사로서 뇌혈류 예비량에 기준을 두고 있는 현상이 혈류 역학적으로도 합리적인 것으로 보인다. 수술후 합병증을 줄이려면 수술중에 정상탄산, 정상체온, 정상혈압을 유지 시킴과 동시에, 수술직후 통증관리도 철저히 하는 것이 매우 중요하다.

사망원인통계연보에 기초한 화재로 인한 사망자발생 실태 분석 (Analysis on the Actual Conditions of Deaths due to Fires based on Annual Report on the cause of Death Statistics in Korea)

  • 통계청에서 매년 발간하고 있는 사망원인통계년보를 통해 화재로 인한 사망자를 분석하였다. 화재로 인한 사망자 수, 전체 사망자 중 화재로 인한 사망자가 차지하는 비율 모두 1993년을 정점으로 감소추세에 있다. 고령세대보다 젊은 세대에서 화재로 인한 사망자가 많이 발생하고 있다. 화재로 인한 사망자는 어린이세대(10세 미만)는 감소, 고령세대(65세 이상)는 증가경향에 있고, 남자 쪽이 여자보다 모든 연령대에서 많다. 연령별 인구 10만명당 화재로 인한 사망자는 고령세대에서 아주 높다. 사고로 인한 사망자 중 화재로 인한 사망자가 차지하는 비율은 큰 변동은 없으나 유아(0세, 1-4세)와 75세 이상 후기고령세대에서 높다.

  • To focus attention on milk and dairy products, we celebrate World Milk Day on the first day of June. Milk is a primary source of essential nutrients for newborn mammals, including humans. Milk and its by-products have been integral to human life since domestication of the dairy cow. Even though a large portion of the population is lactase impersistent, consumption of dairy products, including liquid milk, has been increasing over the last decade in Korea. Per capita annual consumption of dairy products in Korea increased to 61.3 kg in 2008, up from 49.4 kg in 1998. However, consumption of liquid milk has only increased marginally from 30.3 kg in 1998 to 35 kg in 2008. In 2007, the price of farm milk in Korea was the highest in the world. High dairy prices are forcing major manufacturers to find alternative, less expensive sources of milk, which has led to an increase in imported dairy products. Recently, the International Dairy Federation (IDF) published a special report containing the figures for world milk production, milk processing, and consumption. Understanding the current situation with regard to world diary production and the outlook for the industry could be useful during the present world economic crisis. The authors of this brief review summarize the status of dairy production in countries throughout the world, including Korea, along with some of the data published in the IDF annual report. The authors greatly appreciate the support of IDF Korea and the IDF for generously providing the data used in this paper.

식생활 외부화에 관한 한일 비교 연구 -주성분 분석을 이용하여- (Comparison of Dietary Externalization in Korea and Japan -by Principal Component Analysis-)

  • The purpose of this paper was to clarify the actual conditions of the 'Dietary externalization' mainly by using the economic and nutrition-related data, accompanied by the economic development in Korea and Japan. 'Modernization of food style' and other modernization have taken place, among which 'Dietary externalization' in particular has recently drawn interest. At the time this paper clarified with econometric analysis whether there are differences between the two countries in term of the modernization of food style and dietary externalization trend. The trends of Dietary externalization of both Korea and Japan were studied using Principal Component Analysis method. The food subgroup were investigated based on the annual report on the household income and expenditure survey of Korea and the annual report on the family income and expenditure survey of Japan. The statistical data from both country were analyzed by SAS program. The results are as follows; 1. In Korea, the ratio of carbohydrates in the total calorie intake is quite high and animal protein is rather low compared to those in Japan. 2. Traditional food such as grains and vegetables are consumed much more in Korea than in Japan. 3. The Principal Component 1, 2 were extracted in both countries during the whole analysis period, which suggested the 'Dietary externalization' 4. Principal Component 1 has a positive factor loaded in all food items including meals outside the home and process food. In other words, it is apparent that the 'Dietary externalization' tread in Korea has a simple pattern suggesting that all externalization related items are on the rise. 5. Principal component 1, 2 which indicated the dietary externalization, were detected in Japan.

합성세제의 생태독성 평가 (Ecotoxicological Evaluation of Synthetic Surfactant)

  • In order to evaluate the ecotoxicological harzardousness of synthetic surfactants on Han river, Jung-ryang and Jin-Wi stream, we used the Ecotoxicological Risk Quotient (ERQ). The chemical harzardousness is evaluated by the balance of the toxicity and concentration in the environment.. Then, ERQ is defined as follows; ERQ = - log ( Concentration in the environment / Effective concentration in the test ) ERQ of chemical is a logtrighmic value of ratio of a chemical concentration and the toxicity in the laboratory. In case of small ERQ, tie chemical harzardousness is high. If ERQ equals O, the same biological effect as in the laboratory test will be observed in the enviromment by the chemicals. ERQ values of the chemicals were calculated using the maximum concentration in water environment which were cited from the annual report by our ministry of environment, and EC$_{50}$ of Daphnia magna (water flea; acute immobilization test) LC$_{50}$ of Oryzias latipes (fish; acue toxicity test) and EC$_{50}$ of chlorella vulgaris (alga; growth inhibition test), which were taken from the annual report of "Chemical in environment" by Japan EA. Liner alkylbenzene sulfonate (determined to MBAS) showed the high average values with more than 2.0 to three species in Han river and Jin-wi stream, and these results mean to be favorable to environmental safety. The areas of Jung-ryang stream were polluted, as the average values of ERQ were less than 2.0 with equal to three species, and attention should be paid. Therefore, they must be inspected again because their concentration in the environment may have changed during that period. The chemical harzardousness can be numerated with ERQ, and it can be a help to find the chemicals that should be kept under observation and to see whether the chemical pollution is improved or worsened. The determination of the chemical concentration in the environment and toxicity are essential for the effective use of ERQ.se of ERQ.
