  • Forecasting accuracy is examined in the context of Michigan travel demand. Eight different annual models are used to forecast up to two years ahead, and nine different quarterly models up to four quarters. In the evaluation of annual models' performance, multiple regression performed better than the other methods in both the one year and two year forecasts. For quarterly models, Winters exponential smoothing and the Box-Jenkins method performed better than naive 1 s in the first quarter ahead, but these methods in the second, third, and fourth quarters ahead performed worse than naive 1 s. The sophisticated models did not outperform simpler models in producing quarterly forecasts. The best model, multiple regression, performed slightly better when fitted to quarterly rather than annual data: however, it is not possible to strongly recommend quarterly over annual models since the improvement in performance was slight in the case of multiple regression and inconsistent across the other models. As one would expect, accuracy declines as the forecasting time horizon is lengthened in the case of annual models, but the accuracy of quarterly models did not confirm this result.

  • The applicability of ARMA(1, 1) multiseason model, which is in the beginning stage of active researches in the field of synthetic generation is evaluated with the streamflow data at the Nakdong stage gauging station on the main stem of the Nakdong River. The method of parameter estimation for the modelis reviewed and the statistical analysis of the generated seasonal streamflows such as corrlogram analysis and the computation of moments is made. The results obtained by ARMA(1, 1) multiseason model are compared with the historical streamflow data and also with those by two other multiseason models, namely, Thomas-Fiering model and Matalas AR(1) multiseason model. The seasonal streamflows grnerated by three multiseason models were annually summed up to form respective annual flow series whose statistics were compared with those of the annual flow series generated by three annual models, namely, AR(1), Matalas AR(1), and ARMA(1, 1) annual models. The possibility of ARMA(1, 1) multiseason model for the simultaneous generation of seasonal and annual streamflows is also evaluated.

  • In this study, quantitative models were applied to case parks to estimate the carbon reduction by trees, which was compared and analyzed at the tree and park levels. At the tree level, quantitative models of carbon storage and uptake differed by up to 7.9 times, even for the same species and size. At the park level, the carbon reduction from quantitative models varied by up to 3.7 times for the same park. In other words, carbon reduction by quantitative models exhibited considerable variation at the tree and park levels. These differences are likely due to the use of different growth environment coefficients and annual diameter at breast height growth rates and the overestimation of carbon reduction due to the substitution of the same genus and group model for each tree species. Extending the annual carbon uptake per unit area of the case park to the total park area of Chuncheon a carbon uptake ranging from a minimum of 370.4 t/yr and a maximum of 929.3 t/yr, and the difference can reach up to 558.9 t/yr. This is equivalent to the carbon emissions from the annual household electricity consumption of approximately 2,430 people. These results suggest that the indiscriminate application of quantitative models to estimate carbon reduction in urban trees can lead to significant errors and deviations in estimating carbon storage and uptake in urban greenspaces. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for estimating carbon reduction in urban greening research, projects, and policies.

  • The existing stochastic models for the data with hydrologic persistence can be classified into two categories; the short-term and long-term models. For the present study, the Hurst coefficients which are the dominant parameter in the Fast Fractional Gaussian Noise(FFGN)model, one of the long-term models. are estimated with historical annual and monthly streamflows. In order to verify the applicability of these estimators the statistical properties of the generated annual streamflows by FFGN model are compared with those of the historical annual streamflows. Then the generated annual streamflows by FFGN model are disaggregated into the monthly streamflows by disaggregation model at two sites, i.e. Waekman and Jindong, in the Nakdong River Basin. On the other hand, the monthly stream flows at the two sites were also generated by the two-site Matalas model which is one of the short-term models. To evaluate the applicability of the above models and to select the better model the statistical properties of the generated monthly streamflows by two models were compared with those of the historicals, respectively.

  • This study is to verify the applicability of statistical models in predicting flood frequency at the stage gaging stations of which the flow is under natural condition in the Han River basin. The results of the study show that the statistical flood frequency models were proven to be fairly reasonable to apply in practice, and also were compared with sampling variance to calibrate the statistical efficiency of the estimators of the T year floods Q(T) by two different flood frequency models. As a result, it was showed that for return periods greater than about T = 10 years the annual exceedance series estimators of Q(T) has smaller sampling variance than the annual maximum series estimators. It was showed that for the range of return periods the partial duration series estimators of !(T) has smaller sampling variance than the annual maximum series estimate only if the POT model contains at least 2N(N : record length) items or more in order to estimate Q(T) more efficiently than the ANNMAX model.

  • Container handling facilities in Korean ports have increased rapidly according to Korean industrialization and the worldwide containerization. Over 98% of total containers handles in Korean ports are handled in Puan ports. This paper presents the estimation method of annual container handling capacity of container terminals by the computer simulation models. Simulation models are developed utilizing SIMAN IV simulation package. Annual handling capacity of real container terminals such as BCTOC and PECT was estimated by the proposed simulation models. Also, Annual handling capaicty of planned or expected terminals in Puan port was estimated. The comparisons between container forecast demand and estimated handling capacity of Pusan port from 1996 through 2001 were made. It showed that Pusan port will have over two million TEU handling capacity shortage during that period and will face enormous port congestion. Lastly, mid term and long-term capacity expansion plansof container terminals in korean ports were discussed.

  • Generation of evaporation data generally assists in planning, operation, and management of reservoirs and other water works. Annual and monthly evaporation series were generated for King Fahad Dam Lake in Bishah, Saudi Arabia. Data was gathered for period of 22 years. Tests of homogeneity and normality were conducted and results showed that data was homogeneous and normally distributed. For generating annual series, an Autoregressive first order model AR(1) was used and for monthly evaporation series method of fragments was used. Fifty replicates for annual series, and fifty replicates for each month series, each with 22 values length, were generated. Performance of the models was evaluated by comparing the statistical parameters of the generated series with those of the historical data. Annual and monthly models were found to be satisfactory in preserving the statistical parameters of the historical series. About 89% of the tested values of the considered parameters were within the assigned confidence limits

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a regression model to predict the International Roughness Index(IRI) and Surface Distress(SD) for the estimation of HPCI using Expressway Pavement Management System(PMS). METHODS : To develop an HPCI prediction model, prediction models of IRI and SD were developed in advance. The independent variables considered in the models were pavement age, Annual Average Daily Traffic Volume(AADT), the amount of deicing salt used, the severity of Alkali Silica Reaction(ASR), average temperature, annual temperature difference, number of days of precipitation, number of days of snowfall, number of days below zero temperature, and so on. RESULTS : The present IRI, age, AADT, annual temperature differential, number of days of precipitation and ASR severity were chosen as independent variables for the IRI prediction model. In addition, the present IRI, present SD, amount of deicing chemical used, and annual temperature differential were chosen as independent variables for the SD prediction model. CONCLUSIONS : The models for predicting IRI and SD were developed. The predicted HPCI can be calculated from the HPCI equation using the predicted IRI and SD.

  • The purpose of stochastic models for synthetic generation of river flows based on the short-term observed data is to provide abundant input data to the water resources systems of which the system performance and operation policy are to be determined beforehand. Among many of such models the Monte Carlo Method of synthetic generation, which is usually known to be appropriate for annual data generation, is employed to check if it can be applied for the generation of monthly flows. For the purpose of comparisons the statistical parameters of the generated monthly flows by Monte Carlo model based on the appropriate probability distribution for each month were compared with those of the generated flows by Thoms-Fiering multiseason model and with those of the observed monthly flows. On the other hand, the statistical parameters of the annual river flows obtained by adding the generated monthly flows year by year based on the Monte Carlo and Thomas-Fiering models were compared with those of the annual flows generated directly by annual Monte Carlo model with reference to those for the observed annual river flows. Based on the above comparative studies, the discussions are made and conclusions derived.
