  • The leaf of mulberry (Morus alba L) has long been used in Oriental medicine for the prevention or treatment of several diseases. However, little is known about the inhibitory effects of a single compound isolated from the mulberry leaves on inflammatory response. We are isolate a single compound of quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) and astragalin (kaempferol-3-O-glucopyranoside) from the mulberry leaves, and then investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of quercetin, astragalin or quercetin plus astragalin in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine peritoneal macrophages. Each compound suppressed the production of inflammatory mediators (NO, $PGE_2$ and IL-6) in LPS-stimulated murine peritoneal macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. Especially, the cotreatment of quercetin (2.5 ${\mu}M$) and astragalin (2.5 ${\mu}M$) markedly suppressed the production and the expression of inflammatory mediators. These suppressive effects were synergistically increased by their combination. These results suggest that the combination of quercetin and astragalin from the mulberry leaves may be useful for therapeutic drugs against inflammatory immune diseases, probably by suppressing the production of inflammatory mediators.

  • The methods used for risk assessment from exposure to chemicals are well established. in most cases where toxicity other than carcinogenesis is being considered, the standard method relies on establishing the No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) in the most sensitive animal toxicity study and using an appropriate safety factor (SF) to determine the exposure which would be associated with an acceptable risk. For carcinogens a different approach is used because it has been argued there is no threshold of effect. Thus mathematical equations are used to extrapolate from the high doses used in ani-mal experiments. These methods have been strongly criticised in recent years on several grounds. The most cogent criticisms are a) the equations are not based on a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and b) the outcome of a risk assessment based on such models varies more as a consequence of changes to the assumptions and equation used than it does from the data derived from carcinogenicity experiments. Other criticisms include the absence of any measure of the variance on the risk assessment and the selection of default values that are very conservative. Recent advances in the application of risk assessment emphasise that measures of both the exposure and the hazard should be considered as a distribution of values. The outcome of such a risk assessment provides an estimate of the distribution of the risks.

  • Aiming to obtain knowledge and information on tetanus occurrence in Korea, an analystical survey was carried out for registered and admitted patients in four large hospitals in Korea during January 1, 1974 through December 31, 1983. Tile results showed as follows: 1. 175 among total 453 tetanus patients died in the hospitals, therefore fatal rate showed as 24.1%. However, the discharged patients against doctors' advices were not included in these died cases. 2. Sex ratio of admitted tetanus patients between male and felame was shown as 3 : 1. 3. Home delivery in neonate tetanus and laceration and abrasion in non-neonate tetanus were observed as the most dominant cause of death respectively and the wound of foot lead the most dominant cause of death in the latter. 4. Clinical features of the tetanus patients on admission showed the following order in the frequency: sucking and disphagia failure(50.8%), convulsion (53.8%), trismus (50.8%). 5. The tetanus patients were terminated with mainly respiratory ani cardiac failure. 6. In the treatment for tetanus patients, airway (58.3%), intubation (45.3%) and tracheostomy(9.7%) were applied respectively.

  • It has been reported that Eurycoma longifolia Jack commonly known as Tongkat Ali has gained notoreity as a symbol of man's ego and strength by the Malaysian men because it increases male virility and sexual prowess during sexual activities. As such, the effects of 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg of butanol, methanol, water and chloroform fractions of E. longifolia Jack were studied on the laevator am muscle in both uncastrated and testosterone-stimulated castrated intact male rats after dosing them for 12 consecutive weeks. Results showed that 800 mg/kg of butanol, methanol, water and chloroform fractions of E. longifolia Jack significantly increased (p<0.05) the leavator am muscle to 58.56$\pm$1.22, 58.23 $\pm$0.31, 60.21 $\pm$0.86 and 62.35 $\pm$0.98 mg/100 g body weight, respectively, when compared with the control (untreated) in the uncastrated intact male rats and 49.23 $\pm$0.82, 52.23 $\pm$ 0.36, 50.21 $\pm$ 0.66 and 52.35 $\pm$ 0.58 mg/100 g body weight, respectivety, when compared to control (untreated) in the testosterone-stimulated castrated intact male rats. Hence the proandrogenic effect as shown by this study further supported the traditional use of this plant as an aphrodisiac.

  • A stillborn bovine male fetus with abdominal distention, arthrogryposis and atresia ani was presented for diagnostic evaluation. At necropsy, this fetus had a large amount of ascites, urachal obstruction and marked bladder distention. The ventral surface of the bladder had ruptured and attached to the abdominal wall by fibrinous adhesions. There was bilateral hydronephrosis with moderate pelvic dilatation and cortical attenuation. The rectum was filled with meconium but the anus was imperforate. The right forelimb was contracted. The cause(s) of these abnormalities could not be determined; however, we believe that developmental abnormalities during embryogenesis may be the result of chromosomal abnormalities. This report is the first to report congenital urachal obstruction in this species.

  • Due to the recent quantum leaps forward in bio-, nano-, and information-technologies, the precisionization and miniaturization of mechanical and electrical components are in high demand. The allowable margin for vibration limits for such equipments is becoming stricter. In order to meet this demand, understandings on the characteristics of vibration isolation systems are highly required. Among the components comprising the vibration isolation system, air spring has become a focal point. In order to develop a complex defect tester for COG bonding of display panels, a vibration isolation system composed of air springs for mounting is considered in this study. The dynamic characteristics of the air spring are investigated, which is the most essential ingredient for reducing the vibration problem of the tester to the lowest level. Uncoupled dynamic parameters of the air spring are identified through MTS experiments, followed by suggestion of a model-based approach to obtain the remaining coupled dynamic parameters. Finally, the dynamic behaviors of the air spring are estimated and discussed.

  • New regulatory, loci which participate in the regulation of anaerobic inducible gene expression in Salmonella typhimurium were identified. We observed the regulatory network of new regulator mutations to various anaerobic inducible gene (1). Some anaerobic inducible lac fusions were also induced at low pH condition which was severe environment to withstand for its virulence at the place like phagolysosome. Sic oxygen-regulated regulatory mutants (oxr) isolated by Tn10 mutagenesis were divided into two groups. Five of them were found to show negative effect on the regulation of anaerobic gene expression, while on e showed positive effect on the regulation. Genetic loci of four oxr were identified with 54 Mud-P22 lysogens covering the whole chromosome of S. typhimurium, in the nearby region of map unit 87 min (oxr101), 63 min (oxr104), 97 min (oxr 105), and 57 min (oxr 106), respectively. Two oxr mutants were subjected to two-dimensional polyacrylamide electrophoretic analysis of anaerobic inducible proteins for searching the control circuitry of our oxr mutants.
