An Experimental Study on the Effects of the Boundary Layer and Heat Transfer by Vortex Interactions ( I ) - On the common flow down - (와동간의 상호작용이 경계층 및 열전달에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 ( I ) - Common flow down에 관하여 -)

  • This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices. The test facility consists of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings(vortex generators) protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the two longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators are varied from 20 degree to 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators are fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity downstream of the vortex generators is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions are obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurs in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the cases(${\beta}=20^{circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$).

  • The dynamic and static torque characteristics of a three dimensional control panel installed behind a guide panel were investigated in a wind tunnel. The panel was tested for various wind speeds, angles of attack and positions of the panel. The effects of the rotational speed and the amplitude of the sinusoidal motion were also studied. The increasing rate of torque coefficients with the angular position of the panel is small when the panel remains in the wake region, but is linear when it reaches the external stream. In case of a sinusoidal motion of the pannel, a hysterisis appears in the dynamic torque. The hysterisis becomes strong as the wind speed and the angular speed of the panel increase. The unsteady torque is considered quasi-steady when the angular speed is less than 5.5rad/s, i.e. the reduced frequency is less than 0.035.

Aerodynamic characteristics investigation of Megane multi-box bridge deck by CFD-LES simulations and experimental tests

  • Long-span suspension bridges have evolved through the years and with them, the bridge girder decks improved as well, changing their shapes from standard box-deck girders to twin box and multi-box decks sections. The aerodynamic characteristics of the new generation of twin and multiple-decks are investigated nowadays, to provide the best design wind speeds and the optimum dimensions such bridges could achieve. The multi-box Megane bridge deck is one of the new generation bridge decks, consisting of two side decks for traffic lanes and two middle decks for railways, linked between them with connecting beams. Three-dimensional CFD simulations were performed by employing the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) algorithm with a standard Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model, for $Re=9.3{\times}10^7$ and angles of attack ${\alpha}=-4^{\circ}$, $-2^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, $2^{\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}$. Also, a wind tunnel experiment was performed for a scaled model, 1:80 of the Megane bridge deck section, for $Re=5.1{\times}10^5$ and the aerodynamic static coefficients were found to be in good agreement with the results obtained from the CFD-LES model. However the aerodynamic coefficients determined individually, from the CFD-LES model, for each of the traffic and railway decks of the Megane bridge, varied significantly, especially for the downstream traffic deck. Also the pressure distribution and the effect of the spacing between the connecting beams, on the wind speed profiles showed a slight increase in turbulence above the downstream traffic and railway decks.

Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. Unlike common flow down, common flow up vortices moved toward the centerline as they developed and interacted strongly with each other but not with the boundary layer. Spanwise profiles of Stanton number were similar for ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$, but not similar for ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$. The case of ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$ showed the two peak Stanton number, but the case of ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$ showed the only one peak Stanton number.

Numerical Study of the Aerodynamic Characteristics of an Airfoil with Thickness Uncertainty for a Wind Tunnel Testing (두께의 불확실성을 갖는 풍동시험 익형모델의 공력특성에 관한 수치해석 연구)

  • Numerical investigation is performed to understand the effects of thickness uncertainty of a supporting airfoil due to manufacturing processes on the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil used for measuring data in a wind tunnel testing. This is done by comparing the coefficients of lift, drag and moment of the airfoils. In this work, the airfoil model consists of three parts, one located in the center for measuring and two outer parts used for supporting. The study is carried out with a NACA64-418 airfoil and the turbulence model of Transition SST. It is found that the effect of thickness uncertainty of the airfoils used for supporting is not significant to the performance of the test airfoil at various angles of attack and Reynolds numbers.

Control effects of the hydrodynamic force of twin rudder in a uniform stream (균일 흐름중에 놓인 쌍동타의 간격변화가 유체력 제어효과에 미치는 영향)

  • An open water rudder test was carried out to figure out the flow characteristics around a twin rudder at $Re=1.5\times10^4$. In the analysis, the unique characteristics of a twin rudder, which effects rudder farces, were explained. The analysis is included varying angles of attack fram 10 to 30 degree. In this paper, the measured results has been compared with each other to predict the performance characteristics of a twin rudder's 2-dimensional section by 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method. The side force of the rudder could be mainly improved at 0.75L.

Net Mouth Automatic Opening Strips of Towed Net (인망그물의 자동전개깃판에 관하여)

  • To the purpose of keeping net mouth of seine with bag open in the seining operation a novel method was devised and tested with model gear that double textile strips were fixed at both side edges of bag net mouth as sheering devices. The angles of attack of inner and outer strips were the 40 in degrees by adjusting rigging. In seining operation current that flowed between the double strips and generated side force on the strips sheered and opened the net mouth automatically. This paper described dynamic characteristics of the sheering strips and its automatic opening function of net mouth.

  • There are marry ships and marine structures and also has marry differences on according to the shape and the interval of hulls to the purpose. the multi-submerged body needs appropriate distance between the hulls because of the optimum hull form. thus, through this paper, the flow characteristics behind the multi-submerged body according os the distance ration between the hulls and various angles of attack was conducted.

A Study on Boundary Layer Behavior of an NACA 0012 Airfoil (NACA 0012 에어포일의 경계층 거동에 관한 연구)

  • A study on the boundary layer behavior of an NACA 0012 airfoil at low Reynolds numbers was investigated in order to gain knowledge of a boundary layer that might be employed in a turbine blade and MAVs. A hot-wire anemometer was used to measure the boundary layer of an NACA 0012 airfoil at static angles of attack ${\alpha}$=$0^{\circ}$, $3^{\circ}$, and $6^{\circ}$, and Reynolds Numbers Re=$2.3{\times}10^4$, $3.3{\times}10^4$, and $4.8{\times}10^4$. The results of this study show that the laminar boundary layer on the airfoil surface is attached to the surface at ${\alpha}$=$0^{\circ}$, and the laminar separation of the boundary layer on the airfoil surface occurs at ${\alpha}$=$3^{\circ}$. Furthermore, the reattachment of the boundary layer in the present study occurs for the cases of Re=$3.3{\times}10^4$ and Re=$4.8{\times}10^4$at ${\alpha}$=$6^{\circ}$.

  • An experimental study was carried out in order to measure the pitch dynamic stability derivatives of a standard dynamics model in a low-speed wind tunnel. When a trigger signal is generated, the aircraft model starts oscillation with constant amplitudes and frequencies provided by DC electrical servomotor. The measured data are simultaneously recorded on a data recorder for 25 cycles of the model oscillation. The Phase shift needed to compute the dynamic stability derivatives is determined by calculating differences between the peak values of the input and output signals from the dynamic stability balance. Stabilator effects on the stability derivatives were also investigated with deflection angles. Although the driving apparatus and experimental equipments manufactured creatively for this study are different from other experiments, the variational trend of dynamic stability derivatives with the angle of attack is in a good accordance with the results of TPI, NAE, and FFA.
